Vinyl is the medium of the future

I used to be big into collecting Nine Inch Nails memorabilia, which they incentivized by numbering all their albums and singles "Halo 1/2/whatever". They would also release exclusive versions on vinyl, either as Radio/Club promos or just limited edition stuff. I ended up buying a ton of their vinyl releases in high school, and kept some of them to this day, even though I never had a record player.

About 3 years ago, I received a decent record player, and started getting into vinyl collecting. It was mostly video game soundtracks, but I will also prefer to buy new releases in vinyl first. I initially balked at buying digital music in an analog format, but some Retronauts episodes pushed me towards getting a couple, and I haven't stopped. Data Discs releases soundtracks and does the numbering system that NIN did, so that triggers some collector instincts in me. I definitely don't have all their stuff, but I've bought things that I would've passed on had they not put a number on it. I'm spinning the Ikaruga soundtrack right now for instance.

Anyone else get the vinyl bug? My shelves are pretty full at the moment, so I've stopped buying new ones, but made an exception for the Actraiser soundtrack that was just announced.

It just struck me that we live in an age where someone can say "I finally got Poison for my vinyl collection" and it's 50/50 whether they mean

I don't currently have a proper record player, because I don't have space for it, but I love vinyl. It's just so much more fun to have a physical, tangible connection with your music. I made some really foundational musical discoveries digging through my dad's records as a teenager.

The last recording studio I worked in had a record player (and most of the owner's record collection) in the control room, I made a habit of picking out something with whatever band I was working with to listen to when we'd take meal breaks. I miss that place.

I love vinyl because you get things like this Jethro Tull pop-up gatefold.

Sure, it's unrelated to the music, but I love having these tangible pieces of the album as a little art project that extends beyond the songs.

Here's my full collection. I miss being able to dig through bins in out-of-the-way Michigan record stores, both because I've moved and because covid.
