Threading the Needle Drop

I love needle drops in movies and TV and decided this would be a great spot to collect them. What are some of your favourites?

Is a needle drop a specific type of song placement in films or TV (i.e. montages, showing up abruptly), or does it just refer to any appearance of a song in a soundtrack?

Either way, a couple picks:

Everything in Lebowski, especially "To See What Condition My Condition Was In," "The Man in Me," and all the Creedence.

"Thru and Thru" by the Stones, at the end of Sopranos season 2. A totally mediocre Keith Richards song, but the mix of music and imagery elevates it to great. I love when that kind of thing happens.

Uhhhhhhhh, I didn't think this meant music, so here's mine because these are my first thoughts upon reading the thread title:

I always remember this China Syndrome scene because holy shit that's scary that something so simple could cause something so serious

Apollo 13, the needle is essentially how many breaths you have left to take. And it's dropping:

  • Needle drop (movie scoring), the use of an existing recording rather than an original score in a film.
It can be diegetic (IE, the characters can hear it) or simply on the soundtrack. After that, up to you. Like, I don't know if I'd count most on the Ghostbusters soundtrack since it is using songs MADE FOR THE FILM but follow your heart.

Here's a good one, a montage from Better Call Saul with Something Stupid by Lola Marsh

Every time i watched Holy Motors in the theater, everyone moved in their seat and relaxed when Let My Baby Ride plays. It's a great interlude. I didn't find the scene on youtube, but the music is there. Who Were We in the same movie feels like it should count, but it is an original music, i think.

I feel like Wong Kar Wai is great at this, too. And with cheesy music! Like with California Dreamin' and Chungking Express.

Edit: ah, also Strangers in Darjeeling Unlimited.
