THINGIN BOUT THAT TIME JEREMY PARISH INTERVIEWED HIROYUKI ITO FOR ONE UP DOT COM

BEAT

LOUDSKULL
(DUDE/BRO)
Parish wanted to talk about about Ito's decades of work designing most of Final Fantasy's battle systems.

And Ito wanted to talk about FOOTBALL!!!

I feel this wasn't the only time a developer unintentionally clowned on Parish during his 1up/USGamer tenures

It's important that we continue to remember that this happened.

Oh! Create!

I still think about the time Parish and Sam Kennedy sort of chanced into an interview with Hidenori Maezawa, long since retreated from the public eye if he'd ever really been in it, and happened in conversation to organically discover all kinds of wild stuff like him having designed the Konami VRC6 Famicom expansion chip.

Interview part 1
Interview part 2

There's a part 3, but I wasn't able to retrieve it through Wayback Machine. 1Up nostalgia hits kind of hard, even from these fragments of it.

Just some poster
I remember hearing about the Ito football thing some years ago; I don't think I ever knew the ultimate source.

I’m really grateful for Parish for a lot of reasons. I would never have ended up hearing about this weird, wonderful little community if I hadn’t gotten interested in his work, but there’s lots of other great stuff, too. For instance, remember that one 1UP video feature where he sang? I don’t even remember what game it was for, but I remember the singing. And then there was the time on Retronauts when he said “busting makes me feel good” in the voice of Merman from Masters of the Universe, and I almost fell apart laughing in the library where I was working. To this day I couldn’t begin to tell you why I found that so funny.

I believe it was a review for Super Mario Galaxy, which he began by singing a version of "Maria" from West Side Story (as "Mario", naturally). I especially recall the lines: "And suddenly I see/How wonderful a Wii can be" and "Now it is time for playing/Now it is time for U R MR GAY-ing".

Same as I ever was
(He/him)
Hah, I'd never read that one. That's fantastic.

Kind of amazing that (it sounds like) the gambit system was based on the FF enemies' target/action priority system dating back to FFIV.

Summon for hire

Makes sense though. People have deduced the scripts for lots of the 16 bit era enemies and a lot of them are easy to see as gambits.

The connection between gridiron and Final Fantasy feels like it's important to remember, for some reason.
