The Shantae thread of hair-whippin', belly dancin', platformin' action!

I can't believe New TT doesn't have a Shantae thread yet, so here it is!

I was prompted to make this when out of the blue my physical copy of Shantae and the Seven Sirens arrived today!

It took a few months from its digital release date, but on the plus side it came with an actual booklet and also a shiny card.

I held off from playing this since I decided to plop monies down for the cart, so what was the overall opinion of this one? I've heard mixed things.

I liked it! It’s the most Troidy the series has ever been, and the animal transformations function more like you would expect from the genre rather than little mini games/slowly scrolling menus you’d have to suffer through every time you see a wall you can climb.

Downside is that a lot of the dungeon hub looks *extremely* similar to one another; the proper dungeons are a little better, but more than half the game is Futuristic Sewer

I liked it more than 1/2 Genie Hero, but I would still say Pirate’s Curse is my go to pick of the series.

The stress from the dancing mini game in Shantae and the Seven Sirens is weakening my immune system while I have covid. Yes, I know it’s my fault for attempting to play a video game.

I think I like Half-Genie Hero the best, because of the linearity. I'm basic like that.

I'll just get this out of the way on page one: Shantae is a skeevy af series. I still like all of 'em.

It’s probably the last non-boss screen in the game but I just can’t do this harpy section in Half-Genie Hero. Very frustrating.

E: I just had to post to get through so that’s what I did. Nonetheless I will remember this game as “challenging, not for me” like Pirate’s Curse. Dancing was the hardest thing in Seven Sirens after all.

Maybe it's me, but I got a bit of a MegaMan Legends 1 vibe from the setting.

The bits with Squid Baron were a hoot.

I do not understand how Bolo is supposed to work in this Friends to the End thing. Have to do something else for 56 hours every 20 seconds when there's a new challenge involving his thing.

I absolutely invite people who like and are good at video games to post here; I am so sorry about this.

e: omg the secret is you literally have to jump instead of just pressing x to be released... I thought it had something to do with inertia

Whenever a game is rebalanced for "greater challenge" I demand I to know the parameters of "greater challenge". Less item drops? Greater magic consumption? Harder bosses because they have a thirty second invincibility window to lob fireballs around while you simply dodge? Throw me a bone here, Wayforward!

Bah, I'm sure we'll see "patch notes" soon enough...

Based on the article, item drops and magic damage are affected, and bosses have new patterns.

mans they also have a “Nah, screw it” mode that does not use that rebalancing.

Kind of felt like Seven Sirens was a bit lowered in terms of difficulty than the rest of the series, presumably because it was originally launched for mobile.

And here I am a year and a half later FINALLY getting around to this in my backlog.

Verdict: Definitely a mixed bag.

I enjoyed the engine in Half Genie Hero so the moment-to-moment gameplay was good, reducing the animal transformations to individual moves instead of actual new forms that require stopping the action to first perform a dance is preferable to the old way, even if something is lost from the charm of the OG titles. Wasn't a huge fan of the four ACTUAL dances you get in the game as they are rarely anything more than 'blue key for blue door' abilities, and annoyingly any and all rooms where you need to use them give you a blatant visual indicator. The refresh dance is probably the only one that had practical use, but even then trying to use any of them forces you to stop what you're doing.

The game seems to have its best ideas crammed at the start and the dungeons feel like they decrease in quality as the game goes on, hitting the absolute nadir in the Squid Pit which was just a series of kill rooms on a timer followed by the absolute worst boss in the game. Octo Siren felt like they ran out of time and just needed to make one more boss so they went with 'Simon Says but without the part where you see the pattern first', come on Shantae team you can do better than that. It picked up a bit for the last dungeon, even if it was just a linear gauntlet rather than a labyrinth, and the final boss was memorable at least, if not super challenging.

Writing was all over the place but par for the course for the series. Voice acting was much more miss than hit more often than not (Lobster Siren's squeaking was probably supposed to be cute and charming but personally I found it to become insufferable really quick).

I liked the little animated movies that played throughout, made it feel like a platformer from the PSX era back when adding movies was something new and novel.

One thing that really soured me on the game, though, was trying to get 100% completion. I eventually stopped when I realized one Heart Squid was locked behind that Dance Parlor game, specifically breaking all targets without missing once, which was just an inexplicably bad decision. Even worse ending screens are locked behind 100% completion. Just... why. I'll cut my losses there and just look up the pics online (will they have characters in swimsuits and the like? I bet they just might!).

So all 'n all, still a fun game and I enjoyed it more often than not, but not the most memorable entry in the series. If an when we get Shantae 6 I hope they bring back their A game.
