raised up muse's hp to above 500 (it had been around 440, lol, i'd used a bunch of invisibility and parhelion against the sinistrals and stuff) and tried again, i made it a lot further but then found out that i was getting to the point where i was running out of battle resources and the boss was still not dead

so i looked some mechanics up and decided to try again after i hit a few breakpoints (getting to about 600 hp with her, raising up MP and SP on other characters to get certain amounts of big moves). near the end she suddenly gained like 30 hp in about a dozen battles instead of getting 1 hp a couple times in a row most of the time and then occasionally 5 or 6 instead. so i think i ground for about three hours and saw the battle rank go up a bit (we also finally mastered net dodge which was nice), because i started seeing at least one enemy i know i hadn't yet (those skeletons that look like they're holding umbrellas but it's a bat). she hit 590 around the same time as i reached the other goals so i decided to go again, and after a couple times the boss didn't use about 7 aoes in 3 turns halfway through the battle and i won

i honestly went into this game expecting to like it a lot less than rs2, sg, frontier, and ms. and possibly even unlimited. especially after my first attempt fizzled. and to be clear, that's no great shame, i think all those games are incredible. even now i'm not really sure what grabbed me about it, but i did just want to keep on playing it, and i'm super excited to have another go with more knowledge and new ideas (plus i really want to check out a bunch of characters i basically didn't use this time). there's a lot of the same chaotic energy that defines frontier even though i feel like (at least given my current impression) the character gimmicks and genre/tonal shifts don't color the experience quite as strongly as in its successor. they're still pretty prominent, though...even though the core plot feels very "80s rpg" with a basic sketch of portentous prophecies and the elemental lords and all that there ends up being a lot of appeal to the characters and world, and a lot of the big dungeons have really cool defining aesthetics that really made me want to see what more the game had in store. especially the sort of giger thing going on in buné's...i'm definitely going to have to give a go through on the original version sometime to see what everything looks like because even though i think the hd backgrounds are a huge improvement on 2's they still have a tendency to look sorta weird and this is clearly such a gorgeous game.

i definitely agree the balance and mechanics are a bit of a shortcoming, since basically this game takes the skill learning that 2 relied on because it keeps recycling your party members over and over and seems to assign heavily exploiting it as the new baseline, while at the same time making spell learning much more expensive than 2 which feels like a big deterrent against switching characters too often since it's such an important mechanic. it feels assumed that you would use it to stack your best skills on both ends as a default mode of play (particularly due to the prominence of aunus, who you need bows or other ranged attacks to fight, being a major boss twice), so defensive skills are more annoying to learn permanently and boss hp is really high since you can slam whatever good move on 3-5 characters at a time. at the same time, building up max SP and especially MP is a very long process, and there are fewer incentives to pick up new party members. it's still saga, it's really fun, and ultimately a lot of the reason my playthrough completely halted for grinding a couple times was a general misestimation of how things would generally go in terms of dungeons, boss strength, and so on. it definitely doesn't feel as much like some of the other games where i tend to feel like you have more freedom to choose whatever in terms of character builds/party comp and let it play out.

though, like i mentioned, a big part of that was having made some choices that felt like the worst things i could've possibly done; i used sarah a ton in the first half of the game and only started grinding her less actively because i needed to focus on other characters for aunus (she was already ready by the time i beat forneus). i got herman in the party super early even though it took me 10-12 hours after that to beat forneus (you can't kick him out and he's really bad in the meantime) and i guess muse and monika are characters who specifically don't get stat level ups (except muse's hp) without being used. and i got leonid for a bit, but ended up kicking him out after xuan because i wasn't confident in my ability to overcome his downside at the end. also he wasn't really learning new martial arts moves which annoyed me. as i'm looking back now, i kind of think that probably those things all had less of an effect than it seemed like at the time and just felt "worse" because so much of this game felt like a general struggle to figure out what the game wanted. at least peony (the last character i recruited intentionally) was awesome and not too much work, heh

even with all that, it's easy for me to see why this game's remained popular with many people though. i found a lot of it really likeable in the face of all the frustrations and there's still a ton of complexity and interesting concepts to play with, and i'm really excited to play it again and expecting to start that almost right away. i'm probably going to pick julian or ellen because they have my next favorite theme songs and i figure this one might not be much shorter than the last one. hahahaha. certainly i still don't think this one's going to become one of my absolute favorites, but it's very good nonetheless

picked up my final fantasy legend file i started back when the collection came out and finished the other 2/3 of the game this week. i liked it! it's a great complement to that free spirit i saw in RS3, and even hits kind of the same ideas. especially where you have to fight the four lords twice, lol. and there's also some really funny mechanical and visual gags, sometimes aided by the script. it's hard not to see the limitations of the game boy as very harsh these days, so it's fun to see something so chaotic and imaginative by big talents of the era. and this is only the first one!! i'm really excited by the thought of two games that go even harder than this, and are maybe a bit less, well, naïve. (and have kenji ito music...uematsu's compositions are pretty good here and i have nothing against him, but it's really not very saga-ish to me, lol.) it's easy to imagine why this game works the way it does, in so many ways, but things like "encounters that can happen 1 step after the last one", the whole suzaku thing (especially when combined with the encounter system), everything about leveling up humans, and so on...well, it's still cool, but it's clunky.

at least monsters become super good in the mid-late game. constant free heals and high defense makes up for a lot. i started as espergirl and i was saddled with barrier and esp and esp all game. magic books really made her a critical part of the team even after the other stat advantages fell off, but i was still hoping for more, lol

still, my builds couldn't handle the last boss. i wonder what i don't know; most monster techs i tried (and i used a few different forms) and agility weapons seemed to do very poor damage after suzaku.

i know what i've known for a long time though. i teleported back to floor 10 to visit the hardware store, and then it was just one more hike to the end

I'm excited for you to play II specifically - I think it's peak SaGa tbh (though I haven't played them all, and bounced hard off several of them, especially the Romancing games). That game is good in both Gameboy and remake on DS form, whereas for the third game, I'd say just skip it on Gameboy and play the DS remake, it's actually done by Kawazu and much better. Though if you're going to play on GB, the collection is the way to do it since you can speed it up - that game plays SLOW on Gameboy.

See, I'd suggest playing the Game Boy version of FFL3 before playing the remake, because I think that makes you understand and appreciate the differences and expansions. (And doubly so if you ever played Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, because the bones of that are in FFL3.) And it's a fast play-through; ten hours at most and less of it is grinding than the rest of the series.

But playing the game on Gameboy is such a slog, though. And it's not all that interesting to be honest - more of a curio than anything, and it barely even feels like a SaGa game. I guess I'll put it this way: if you bounce off SaGa 3 on the collection, spines, give it a shot on DS, it is MUCH better in pretty much every way imo

i already loaded both of em up on my 3ds haha, but i want to give the gb versions a real shot since i figure they might be a bit hard to go back to for me once i've played the newer ones

Honestly one of the reasons I've bounced off the DS remakes is just their art style. I do not like the character designs and that's too bad. FFL3 has cute and charming GB graphics!

Fair enough! I prefer the DS game for the myriad systems and quality of life improvements, and content they added.

There is something really charming about them! My pfp is from FFL3 - a character named Jorgandr who looks like this in battle:

ffl2's been good! but also...wheeeeew this game went from surprisingly easy to really tough around venus' world. suddenly i started getting back attacked a LOT, the success rate of escaping went way down, and my robot wasn't nearly invincible anymore...started to feel more like the tougher parts of the first game. i still managed to scrape through edo world, barely, but i couldn't make a lot of headway into the "nasty" dungeon. of course, checking the prism...you don't have to do it? but the place that opened after getting pegasus isn't any easier, so i guess it's time to take a bit to try and solve a new party build and save up for some more armor and useful weapons

I vastly prefer the GB FFL3 to the remake - and not just because the remake removes the world map in favour of a sad menu!

FFL3 felt like a more welcoming and accessible game, a "baby's first SaGa" type deal, which makes it interesting among the various impenetrable variations of SaGa to me haha. It's interesting to have a Kawazu-adjacent game that does try to meet the general playerbase halfway without the harsher "take it or leave it" attitude most of his games adopt.

venus (and venus world) is notoriously a huge difficulty spike.

if you haven't been using, like, an equipment list that shows how powerful weapons and armor are i would recommend pulling one up for the Nasty Dungeon because there's A Lot more than you can actually carry.

I'm honestly surprised at all the FFL3 on Gameboy love - I agree with Pombar that it's a more welcoming and accessible game, though I don't think it's a particularly good one. There's dozens of RPGs I'd recommend before it that do that better, such as the recently rereleased Super Mario RPG for example. The mechanics in the original release aren't all that interesting, nor is the script - both of which aren't the case on DS. Sure, the graphics are (somewhat) more charming on Gameboy (I don't like a lot of the art they use for monsters if I'm honest, it looks super generic to me), but that's about all it has going for it imo.

I will say I didn't play any of the Legend games back in the day, so maybe I'm coming up against nostalgia here, which is fair enough. I remember Shane Bettenhausen said on an old episode of Retronauts he prefers 3 to the other ones, but he made it pretty clear he's not a Kawazu fan in the first place haha (and I have my limits, too. I enjoyed Scarlet Grace but have bounced off all three Romancing SaGas)

It was an old LP of FFL2 that got me to join TT back in the day. Great game.

The Nasty Dungeon in particular is quite a difficulty spike, but I suspect you'd have a tough time with the rest of the game if you were to skip it.

It's a shame it airs at 6:00 AM PT. But on the other hand... they're probably gonna talk about Re;universe for most of the time anyway, so I can be okay with seeing the important stuff after the fact.

honestly though imagine actually sitting through these* livestreams when they're live instead of just watching the gameplay trailers and reading a summary of what they said

I mean it's a welcoming step towards playing a Kawazu game. Super Mario RPG is clearly a better Intro To RPGs, but FFL3 is unique in that it's a kind of Intro To Kawazu. Dips its toes into FFL2's mechanics without going whole hog, making it easier to then move into that should you like those less-standard parts of FFL3.

Out of the blue, Kawazu appended a note to a post he made in 2014 about who Ellen in Romancing Saga 3 would and wouldn't get along with to clarify that this wasn't the official/canon story for Ellen, because that doesn't exist—the game is whatever you experience and imagine.

(For anyone curious about his personal feelings: he imagined Ellen becoming a pirate with a revitalized Black.)

Because I couldn't stand the wait for Emerald Beyond, I started another file in Minstrel Song last night. I had 2 clears already, with Barbara and Gray, and decided on Sif this time. I couldn't quite remember what I liked to carry over into NG+, so I went with everything that wouldn't necessarily let me steamroll monsters immediately, mostly meaning I didn't carry over items/gold/stats. I also chose to do Normal rank progression.

Sif's intro was pretty tough on Normal progression; first off, it didn't help any that I forgot to even visit the Pub at first, so I went out solo until I started getting into fights with Rumble Bugs. Who would in a fight: 1 Sif or 1 Rumble Bug? Answer: Rumble Bug. They can stun and paralyze and were faster than me every turn. Anyway, that got remedied once I recruited the Minstrel and a Valhallan Warrior. But even still, the caves she has to navigate for her intro quests are dense with tight corridors, and there's no one to teach you the move silently/hide proficiencies, so you're pretty much stuck fighting a good number of battles. By the time I recruited Albert for part 2 of her intro and then got to a new location, I was already at Event Rank 6.

I am still so impressed with how fast the Remaster of this game plays. It's just such an enjoyable visceral experience.
