As I’ve said last time I’ve overbooked myself so I’ll keep this brief. Adrenaline ran a good list! And I think a lot of great villains were accounted for. I think there are definitely some on this list where I hadn’t had the media yet were I might put them on the next time around (Gul Dukat, for example).

I think some people were disappointed the Joker ranked so high and I get it. He was my number too but I feel like we’ve been fed so much of the edgelord “force of nature” version of the character that it’s easy to forget when he’s a more versatile villain (and I love versatile villains) who can be comedic and scary and kinda sad/pathetic and have facets you don’t necessarily think of. And a lot of that impression is thanks to Paul Dini’s writing and Mark Hamill’s performance in Batman: The Animated Series. God, it’s such a perfect mix of dialogue and performance.

But there are no shortage of great villains out there. Thinking about the ones I want to speak of this week, it’s tough, I can think of so many! What are some great villains you think didn’t make the list?

One villain I didn't think of last time that watching a crummy musical remake of a beloved film reminded me of has me kicking myself that I didn't think of her the first time.

Regina George
ALOvnRE.jpg

Rachel McAdams's most iconic character is also one of her meanest and most delightful. Regina is the queen of the popular posse, and lets everyone know it. We've all known a Regina when we were in high school, which is part of what makes her so compelling, and McAdams plays her as the uncaring attention seeker that such a person would be, but brings the actress's charisma and compassion to the role as well.

George was also played by Renee Rapp in the 2024 musical film version, and honestly she's the only person that matched the original performance of the character she played. Rapp brings a different style to Regina while capturing her essence, and it's a damn shame she was let down by basically everything else about the film.

My villain list would definitely change a bit when swapping old recency bias for new, but a lot of the ones that hit the Top50 would stay in. I'm a bit surprised Magus didn't make it in, as he's a fun one from the board's favorite game.

Here's my list from that Top 50. I'm not sure if it really would have changed much from then and now. (I might have busted Palpatine down a few spots because of the new trilogy.)

  3. Emperor Palpatine (Star Wars)

I wonder how many JoJo villains would make the list if we did it again.

As for Magus I think maybe he didn't rate because he can join your side and even if he doesn't then he still isn't the final villain of the game.

I'm basically surprised any time that one of these lists isn't won by Chrono Trigger or Batman.
The fact that I can't turn around in this forum without stubbing my toe on a Simpsmans reference and that show was still runner up to Batman in the cartoons thread pretty much proves your point. Anyways, here was my list.

1) Ben Linus (LOST)
2) GlaDOS (Portal series)
3) Sheriff of Nottingham (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves)
4) Kefka (Final Fantasy VI)
5) Q (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
6) The Joker (The Dark Knight)

My list

1. Doctor Doom (Marvel Comics)
2. The Joker (DC Comics)
3. Walter White (Breaking Bad)
4. Montgomery Burns (The Simpsons)
5. Mayor Wilkins (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
6. The Kingpin (Marvel Comics)

10. Dr. Girlfriend [AKA Dr. Mrs. The Monarch] (The Venture Bros.)
11. The Monarch (The Venture Bros.)
12. Charlie Meadows (Barton Fink)
13. GLaDOS (Portal)
14. Doctor Octopus (Marvel Comics)
15. Frank Booth (Blue Velvet)
16. Mojo Jojo (The Powerpuff Girls)
17. Gus Fring (Breaking Bad)
18. Anton Chigurh (No Country For Old Men)
19. Lorne Malvo (Fargo)
20. Darth Vader (The Star Wars!)
21. Kefka (Final Fantasy VI)
22. Col. Hans Landa (Inglourious Basterds)
23. David Xanatos (Gargoyles)
24. Gideon Gleeful (Gravity Falls)
25. Demona (Gargoyles)

God, this is both a very good list and yet I think mine would look really different today. The unfortunate toxicity of Whedon soured my Buffy love so as great a villain as he is, Mayor Wilkins would definitely go. I think more than a few comic book villains, love them as I do, might not drop off but might drop farther in favour of some really compelling anime and crime series villains. I still feel like the villains that would drop off my list are REALLY GOOD villains but I feel I’ve found even more great villains since then I’d want to showcase, an embarrassment of riches.

Lalo Salamanca

FTeDEafVEAAe4fJ.jpg:large

Its hard to tell which is scarier: Lalo Salamanca when he is happy or Lalo Salamanca when he is angry. There’s no way you aren’t in for a terrifying time (whether it be primal pants crapping fear or simply existential dread sharing the same room of someone whose evil you are having a hard time processing).

Lalo was originally a name drop in the first appearance of sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and when the show got a prequel spin-off, Better Call Saul, it was becoming clear many of the jokes and initially tossed off references from the original series were actually being reworked in the new show not simply as fan pandering but with cleverness. And fans suspected that Saul preying for his life assuming he was being killed at the behest of “Lalo” in his first appearance meant we might meet Lalo. And did we ever.

We knew Saul would be terrified of him but him being a Salamanca is a big reveal, especially since each Salamanca has been truly evil in terrifying ways: the cold blooded cousins (not twins, easy mistake though), the hateful Hector, the unhinged Tuco. Each Salamanca was a different shade of evil. But Lalo was unique. He… was charming.

This is thanks to the fact that actor Tony Dalton is… EFFORTLESSLY CHARMING. See him also on Hawkeye as a non-super version of The Swordsman, a Marvel character people don’t care about, and he’s one of the most charming parts of a charming show. How has Tony Dalton not been hired for every big character actor piece where a man who oozes charm is needed.

But Lalo, while charming, is also dangerous in all the ways characters in the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul-universe are. He’s violent, yes, but he’s also incredibly shrewd. In fact, it’s a bizarre mix of shrewd and brazen; he’s not afraid of taking big violent moves that should get him in trouble but he’s also excellent at avoiding consequences and, even worse, sniffing out secrets. He’s got a detective’s mind but uses it FOR crime and more importantly to try to put the screws to Gus Fring. Gus Fring was one of the top villains of the last list and to make that guy sweat takes a lot… And Lalo has it.

For most of Better Call Saul, we are existing in two stories that are only partially connected; Jimmy McGill navigating the world of law and finding himself rebelling against authority in his new flamboyant persona Saul Goodman and Mike Ehrmantraut trying to get enough crime money to get by only to get sucked into looking to get revenge on the Salamancas. Lalo brings the two together when he hires Saul and offers to let him become a friend of the cartel… a big prize but it turns out that’s when Jimmy really starts selling his soul.

The brilliance of Lalo is that he’s sort of an evil Columbo. He puts on a friendly veneer and let’s himself seem easy-going but the people he’s going after makes it apparent to those he’s dealing with how his swagger and arrogance aren’t unwarranted. And every time they think they have a handle on how dangerous he is, he turns an even more devilish trick. The show had a high bar in not only creating a new villain but one genuinely threatening to the previous top villain, who we know WILL SURVIVE (it is a prequel after all). And yet the writers succeeded in giving such a great gift in Tony Dalton. I’m a fan for life.

huh. I could've sworn I voted in this one.

I recall my list being split 50/50 between SNES and Genesis games, with a hamfisted editorial bias of putting the Genesis games on the upper half of the list. A solitary PC-Engine game split my list down the middle.

I imagine my list would be pretty different now that I've had more exposure to the SNES, Genesis, and TG16 libraries since this originally was compiled. Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger would still be at the top, though.

Sorry for the oversight.
No worries. You actually inspired me to dig up my list from the depths.

Titles that were not on the top 50 list have been bolded, and titles that were honorable mentions have been italicized.

Beware: The following list is canon.
  1. Contra III: The Alien Wars (If I were to give the Pope a vidcon, this would be it.)
  2. Rocket Knight Adventures
  3. Ranger-X
  4. Uniracers (aka Unirally) (Easily one of the best racers ever.)
  5. Star Fox 2
  6. Castlevania Bloodlines
  7. Sub-Terrania (Why aren't Thrust-clones a more popular genre?)
  8. Thunder Force IV (Almost entirely by virtue of its soundtrack.)
  9. Mega Man X2: X-Men United
  10. Gunstar Heroes
  11. Alien Soldier
  12. Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
  13. Garou: Mark of the Wolves (Included mainly to balance the number of SNES and Genesis titles. Had I felt less helpful, Silent Debuggers could have taken this spot.)
  14. Star Fox
  15. Super Turrican (Unfinished (sorta), but still better than Mega Turrican.)
  16. Contra: Hard Corps
  17. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
  18. Kid Chameleon (Mario 3, except with an unhealthy disdain for the player.)
  19. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
  20. The Adventures of Batman & Robin [Genesis]
  21. Sonic the Hedgehog
  22. Earthbound
  23. Mega Man X (Yes, I put this below X2, even though my handle is from a third-string miniboss from this game.)
  24. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  25. Super Metroid

I could've sworn I voted for Silent Debuggers in the middle as a joke, but I guess I decided to go with a good game instead.

Super Metroid would be in the top 3 if I hadn't been metagaming my votes, and if I were to make this list now I'd probably do something incredibly daft like replace Yoshi's Island with Plok (or something less daft like replace Thunder Force IV with Xeno Crisis).

So I actually didn't send in a list for this Top 50 (since there would have been a lot of overlap with my favorite JRPGs). But I did watch the reveal thread and add peanut gallery comments here and there.

me on TT 2.0 said:
I didn't submit a list but I if had I think it probably would have included the following games that were listed. (But I'm not sure what personal ranking I would have given them.)
Lufia 2, Illusion of Gaia, Street Fighter 2, Super Caslevania 4, Street Fighter 2 : Turbo, Final Fantasy 5, Super Mario RPG, TMNT 4: Turtles in Time, Final Fantasy 2 (4), ActRaiser, Mega Man X, Final Fantasy 6, Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger

Also my list would have included the following that didn't show in the big list:

Breath of Fire 1
Fighter's History
Final Fight 2
Lufia 1
Ogre Battle
Super Street Fighter 2
TMNT Tournament Fighters
World Heroes 2

I don't think my 16-bit list would change much. Especially now that current consoles' retro offerings are mostly corralled into subscription services, and I never feel like I have enough free time to justify game subscriptions, so I just don't have a quick/easy/tempting way to sample old games that I don't already own.

Also since I was a SNES kid like half the forum, my entire top 12 or so made the Top 50 and I don't have a lot of picks I feel strongly about that *didn't* make it to highlight... I mean, Gradius III? F-Zero? Harvest Moon? Still all pretty obvious stuff even if they didn't quite crack the 50.

The only even slightly out-there things that made my list were Magical Drop II (NeoGeo), which I've barely played but have memories of mainly for it being kind of a legendary "game with nice pixel art of anime babes" back in the day among the weeb community, and Magic Knights RayEarth (SFC), a licensed anime RPG I picked up while on study abroad in Japan and managed to stumble my way through since all the text is aimed at young grade-schoolers.

F-Zero's non-inclusion makes some sense to me, as a fan. It's aesthetics are unimpeachable and it's mechanically solid, but the lack of multiplayer and the asinine limitations in time trial mode really limit the game's lasting appeal.

The lack of any 2D shmups on the list is kinda surprising, though given this forum's SNES bias I guess it's to be expected.

Puyo Puyo

PuyoPuyoArt.jpg

Completely forgot this when making my list (but I put in the Sonic reskin). When I lived in Japan, I was often loitering in a used manga/video game shop where I would play a bunch of games. They had this one set up often and it’s a ton of fun.

If you haven’t played a Puyo Puyo game, it’s a Tetris like with some unique mechanics and instead of making a line, you must match for coloured slimes. The more slimes you connect, the bigger the advantage because you are playing an opponent. When someone makes a good combo, they start dropping rocks on your enemy which makes winning harder. The franchise has been going for a long time.

I think it also helps there’s a sense of fun as there was wacky characters trying to best each other with slime puzzles.

(This is the ad for part 2 but let’s face it, it’s basically the same)
