The One Piece live action adaptation looks fun

No idea if anyone else cares, but One Piece will soon get a live action adaptation on Netflix. Here, have two trailers (spoilers for the beginning of One Piece, of course):

This is the first one, from a month or so ago. Looked decent to me.

This is a completely new trailor, and I love it. It still looks kinda trashy, but it looks way better than I would expect it to. That said, I never cared about any live adaptations, so maybe this doesn't mean much. But I really like the actor who plays Luffy, and some of the others are, at least when it comes to looks, a perfect fit.

I think the series, at least the first season, will have eight episodes, and will cover the East Blue part of the manga, something like the first 12 volumes.

I have no idea if this will work for anyone who is not a fan, but it looks like the adaptation, while true to the mood of the manga, is its own thing enough to work as a live adaptation. If anyone is curious about this insanely long series, maybe give this a try? While East Blue is clearly the beginning of the series, with the implication that the real adventure starts afterwards, it also feels like a full arc in some ways. So this might be a good entry point.

Still don't have high hopes because Netfix's track record for live action anime adaptions.... is what it is. Also, condensing the entire dang East Blue into 8 episodes seems nuts, but that sort of fast pace might be the only way to get through this series in a reasonable way. They look like they're futzing with the timeline a bit too, or at the very least keeping certain baddies around longer because one shot seemed to show Captain Kuro about to attack Sanji from behind.

Shame they went so far with the costuming but they didn't give Usopp his big ol' Pinocchio nose.

Sure, there is a decent chance that it's bad, but the mood seems right.

In case it's bad, I will have something to laugh at. So, win-win. I really think I can't lose here.

It’s a manga that has been running for approximately 140 years about a group of zany pirates searching for a legendary treasure that was left in “one piece” by some pirate king or something. The leader of the group has stretchy powers and can’t swim.

Actually the 4kids rap intro sums it up nicely in the dumbest way possible “It’s the name of the treasure!”

If I don't know anything about One Piece, what should I know before going in?
The live-action series starts at the very beginning, so you probably don't need to know anything.

Very basic: Gold Roger, King of the Pirates, got executed and, before dying, told everyone that he hid his big treasure, the One Piece, somewhere. This started the golden age of piracy. That's what you see at the beginning of the wecond trailer.

Our protagonist, Luffy, wants to become King of the Pirates, and you come along for the ride, from when he stes sail, on his own. He finds crewmates and has adventures.

Just a short reminder, that the show will be on Netflix on the 31. Just in case anyone is curious about this, aside from me.

And despite all the warning signs (mainly: it's a live-adaptation of an anime) I'm excited. It looks good, at least for what it is, and I'm looking forward to experiencing this show. If it's bad, I'll always have the manga, so it's no big deal. Previews seem to be way better than for Cowboy Bepop, which might not mean much, but still.

And again, if someone is curious about the show, this starts at the very beginning. You don't need to know anything about One Piece, to watch the adaptation.
