I'm playing NES games alongside Elden Ring so I don't get burned out, and right now I'm playing Bubble Bobble for the very first time. It's... an experience.

Also, why did people hate NES Tetris so much? It plays fine.

My parents didn't like it because it lacked 2-player.

Speaking personally, it knocked the Atari version of Tetris off store shelves, and in comparison feels shiny, yet hollow. Tengen Tetris isn't a gorgeous game- it seems the developers used the dullest colors in the NES's paint box- but it's got extra modes and two player simultaneous play.

Anyway, that was a battle fought long ago, and I suppose there's no point in obsessing over it now. I like the NES. I used to think it was the best game system of all time, and held that belief for many years, but now I'm not so sure. Gaming has changed and broadened in scope so much since its release that the NES almost feels antiquated in 2022.

Some of its games are still great even now, though. Shatterhand is a favorite on the NES. It's sometimes derided as "another guy game," but it's a rock solid guy game, with a fantastic soundtrack and some refreshing ideas. I like it much better than some of the other action platformers in that vein, like Low G Man. I'm sure there's a whole bunch of other NES titles I could mention, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head other than the painfully obvious Nintendo-published games.

No "almost" about it. 37 years old this year. We're as far removed now from the launch of the NES as the launch of the NES was from the Truman administration. And if we want to go back further, the Famicom was release in '83, so this post is as far removed from the Famicom's launch as the Fami's launch was from the penultimate year of World War 2.

The NES is an incredible console, home to some of my favourite games. Mario 3 and Mega Man 3 basically cemented me on my path.

I think I might not have played NES Tetris until the last few years (after finding it on an emulator handheld); I played so many hours of Game Boy Tetris as a kid that I always have trouble thinking of other versions. But I might be an outlier, because I didn't actually own a NES of my own until high school. I got a Game Boy in 4th grade and bought a Super NES in 6th, but the NES was a system I only played at friends' houses until I bought a used one at Funcoland. So there are many, many NES games that I only knew through Nintendo Power and/or only got exposed to recently.

You know what's shockingly good for the NES? Little Samson. Fantastic variety, lots of stages, lot of clever puzzle/obstacles you can approach multiple ways, reasonable difficulty level.

I like that this was an issue of such importance to Nintendo that they printed a corporate public service announcement.

I play my Nintendo to this day! Though everyone else calls it a 'Switch' for some reason. Nope, just the latest "Nintendo'

Speaking of Nintendos, is there a consensus on the best emulator to be using these days? I'd like to capture images and/or video so I'm not looking for Mister stuff. Just something to run on the PC that makes it easy to capture screenshots and such.

I find Nestopia to still be a good little program, although Mesen is supposed to be the best one.

I remember going play "Nintendo" at my cousin's house, where we would convince my aunt to drive us to the video store so we can rent one of them "game tapes." Nintendo was so ubiquitous for a time that it was video games, at least in the US. No one played video games; you played Nintendo.

Anyway, outside of the classics everyone knows, I'll forever love the NES* for Tombs and Treasure and Kickle Cubicle.

*For my money, Nintendo peaked with the Super NES.

That does make me wonder where that starts and ends. I can think of NES games I like that probably don't fit in that list but I'm not 100% sure what exactly that list is. (Also, it's been ages since I have played many of the games I'm thinking of so I don't know how well they have held up.)

Why would you call it a Nintendo? I always called it the Nintendo Entertainment System.

For example: We should play the Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System.

If I was making a list of "the classics everyone knows", I suspect I could get most of them just by naming long-running series: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania, Contra, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior/Quest.

The NES is a wealth of treasures, it really is. You don't have to stray far from the established Nintendo path to find all kinds of goodies. All Games are Good, especially when taking a backwards look at a library as established as the NES's. Along side the bonified classics of the Capcom and Konami varieties there's all kinds of fascinating oddities, one-offs, and experiments. No other system has Dr. Chaos, is what I'm saying.
