The Legend of Heroes: Trails of General Discussion

Flame edit of Azure is better than the old, pre-Geofront translation of Zero, but not by much. It’s understandable, but not enjoyable. NPCs were the worst of it. (I played on a hacked PSP so I didn’t really have port issues.)

As a fan of the series, I thought the plot/story was aces and definitely shined through the translation. I’m glad I played it before Cold Steel 3 and 4. If you don’t care about playing those right away, maybe wait?

I'm about 40 hours into Trails of Cold Steel 3 and just finished chapter 2. How long is this damn game?!? And I'm not trying to 100% the dang thing either.

IIRC, my playtime was 60 or 70 hours? I didn't 100% it either, and I tend to get through the Trails games on the fast side compared to most, too. I know a few people hit 100 hours with it.

I'd have to dig my PS4 out and boot it to check, but pretty sure I've been running 60-70 hours for the CS games for first playthroughs. I'm also apparently really good and fast at playing RPGs tho.

I had hoped to start Cold Steel 4 tonight, but I preordered the digital version and apparently there's an issue with the store because it won't download at all.

Certainly does not bode well for a new, "all-digital" version of the PS5.

I'm only getting the PC version this time around, so I've got a few months yet.

Aw, so I'm going to have to wait for the deep Mightyblue lore readings :(

(j/k, hard to blame you, I was thinking about waiting for the Switch version of IV but screw it, I want to know what happens sooner rather than later lol)

I've heard of the issues people have been having with it - even going so far as to needing a refund from sony due to a borked license that won't allow the download? That totally sucks, and I am glad I am not ready for it yet.

Continuing through Cold Steel 1 in a NG+ run. I wasn't sure if I really wanted to, but seeing throwaway lines like:

"Crazy about all that stuff in Crossbell right?"

"Yeah, but that new police division I told you about really took care of it"

...is really great and makes me enjoy it even more.

Having end-game weapons and armor and 2x speed also helps.

Got a refund from Sony for my borked pre-order and re-ordered it, and it's downloading now. Should be able to start it up in a couple of minutes.

The irony of this is that the reason I pre-ordered the digital version was because I had trouble finding a physical copy of Cold Steel 3 and when I finally ordered one to be shipped online, there were a whole bunch of delays with that order that led me to cancel that order and just download the digital version. Guess this series is just cursed to give me bad luck with launches.

The localization for Arts/Crafts/Quartz/Equipment in CSIII was pretty scuffed, but I'm still kind of impressed at how quickly something was obviously wrong this time around. Literally just opened the menu as soon as I could and saw Blue Ascension with the exact same properties as Crystal Edge (Power C+, Line M+ (Set), Freeze 25%) despite costing 80 EP more. The spell is actually Power A, Circle L (Set), Seal 100%. Trust nothing.

Thanks, NISA.

Er yeah, sorry I wasn't clear. Has anyone used the patch + edits? Is it good enough or should I wait?
Late to reply but I played half of the Azure Flame edit and I wouldn’t really recommend it. All NPC and side quest dialogue felt like they were machine translated, and the main scenario dialogue wasn’t that much more enjoyable to read. Overall felt like a very subpar experience, and I dropped it the moment that the Geofront release was announced. It’s not too far from releasing now so I’d just wait for it and play CS1&2 first if you’re itching for more Trails.

It might have just been due to reduced expectations, but the Flame edit for Azure didn't bother me anywhere near as much as the NISA CS localizations have.

Was running through the Labyrinth for the 3rd phase and had 2 battles in a row where I nearly wiped because my whole party got stunned right away (didn't have an opportunity for a single action in both cases) in one attack and unable to act as the enemies got multiple free attacks on me. Lost my 4 main fighters and was only able to run away from battle because my support characters swapped in automatically. Was extremely frustrating.

I must have played too many Ys games this month, I'm rushing through this too fast and not taking the time to talk to NPCs or even battle a ton. Just got to Act 2 and don't see myself slowing down, which is probably going to screw me over in the long run and force me to grind. Oh well! I must know what happens

I'm a bit past this part at the moment - in early Act 2 for real this time - but Falcom has really impressed me with their music lately:

I'm playing my way through TOCS III on my Switch and am enjoying it EXCEPT now when I get to bosses. The end of Chapter Two in particular is bad:

you're trying to get to the top of the tower, so you figure that you'll get an opportunity at the top fo the tower to heal up at an orbal charging station. Except whoops, you have a sub boss BEFORE you reach the stairs with no warning! Sure hope you have some accessories that prevent Faint, because the Raging Armor boss and his lil' buddies spam it mercilessly!

then you get on to the real final bosses, and surprise, some of their attacks can cause a total party wipe! Never mind that you're leveled up enough that you can get through most regular battles as Unscathed.

in general... the game is very proud of its Breaking mechanic and forces you to use the general strategy of upping your Break Damage with an Order, breaking the boss, and then doing another Order to reduce delay time so you can pour on the damage before the boss can heal itself and buff its stats.

this makes boss battles feel same-y after a while. :(

Yeah, once you figure out the optimal strategy in ToCS III all the bosses are more or less the same. You’re better off kitting yourself out to prevent them from getting a turn than experimenting in any meaningful way.

I really need to get through that game. I stalled in the last chapter and now IV is already out 😭

I think I ended up having way more problems with Jaegers and other generic human enemies than I did with any of the bosses.

I remember that right before the final boss of Cold Steel 3, I was able to beat (major spoilers follow) the boss fight against Rufus, Claire, Milly, and Lechter without taking a single HP of damage with a combination of Delay skills, Break skills, and Guard/Reflect abilities. I was very annoyed when the cutscene immediately afterward implied that the battle between us had been a stalemate.

I don't think any of the bosses in CSIII got a turn at all for me from Ordis on (Chapter 3?), outside of duels and mech stuff. That's where you can start buying Abyss Shadows, fish for Action 3, and make Chrono Burst and Break 3 quartz. It just got more extreme later as I could afford a second Abyss Shadow on more characters and started making Chrono Burst SRs and eventually Skada Gems and Rakan Gems. I didn't even abuse Chrono Burst as much as I could have, not even casting it in most fights.

Break got nerfed a lot in CSIV though. Break bonuses from Master Quartz got cut in half or more, Sledgehammer is worse, the delay from breaking seems smaller, and lots of bosses will recover from break (And any other status effects) and fully restore break damage at ~50% HP.

I've still beaten several bosses before they get a turn, and they usually just end up getting 1-2 turns if not. Unless I'm forced to use a bunch of guest characters with disastrously bad fixed setups, then I have more legitimate boss fights.

Finished Cold Steel IV! It was pretty great. Some more thoughts in the spoilers below:

It's been said before, but I really think Juna should have been made the main character for 3 and 4, and not just because Rean is about as exciting as plain oatmeal. She has the most compelling circumstances- after seeing her once-independent country being annexed into the empire, she has to endure leaving it behind for the very nation that conquered it, and being a pupil of the most famous soldier that took part in the occupation. It has great potential! But because this series has Social Links and you choose which girl you love at the end, we have to be stuck with a male protagonist.

I was sort of disappointed by how little discussion there is of class politics here. When I played the first game it was the most interesting part of the story to me. But it starts to fade in relevance in 3 and then in 4 those issues are basically nowhere. It retrospect, it's clear that the tensions between the Noble Houses and the Reformist factions in the first game exist not because it has a point to make about classism but because it needs a circumstance to justify a civil war of the second game, which in turn sets up The Great Twilight, Rivalries, and all that jazz. The problem was that I was far more interested in seeing how Erebonia's class politics worked than learning about ancient curses or the history of the Gnomes.

Claire and Lechter got off easy and should have been in prison right alongside Rufus, or at least removed from any kind of position of power. No, I absolutely do not want them helping rebuild the empire in the aftermath, they helped cause this mess.

Your reactions to Hajimari will be pretty interesting, whenever it gets brought over.

I'd definitely be interested in playing it.

Also, something I forgot to mention-

This series has the same problem as Persona where it focuses too much on your protagonist's relationships with other characters and not enough on those other characters' relationships with each other. There are things like Machias and Jusis arguing and Laura and Fie struggling to work together in the first game, and then you have Millium getting closer to Altina and Jusis in CS3, but that's kind of it.

It stands out more to me now largely because I spent much of last year playing Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which is much better in this regard- there are support conversations between the various students, and not just between the protagonist and the other characters. It still gives favoritism to Byleth given that you have a choice of who to marry, but it doesn't forget that the supporting characters should have relationships with each other. It knows that it's important to discuss not just how, for example, Dorothea gets along with Byleth, but how Dorothea gets along with her fellow classmates. It shows us so many more shades of her, and I want to see that with Class VII. I want to see how Laura gets along with Alisa, how Machias and Fie relate to each other, etc.
