The Evercade Thread; The Most Inexplicable Retro Compilations Ever

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
Hi! I’m Octo! Bringing back a thread from TT2.0 that I don’t know if anyone except Madhair and myself ever used. But everyone should, because it’s about the Evercade!

“What’s the Evercade?”, you snarl, punching a hole in the wall with your mighty fists.

Why I’m glad you asked!

The Evercade is a handheld where the entire library is made of retro compilations. And while there’s a handful of exceptions, nearly every single game in every one of those collections Is the last one you might have expected.

Sure, the Namco Museum has PAC Man and Dig Dug, But you can’t look me in the eye and say you’re not surprised to see Weaponlords return.

Who among you doesn’t feel your heart get deeply confused when At last, Drakken and Dragonview are in the same cartridge?

Are you going to lie to my face and tell me that you feel nothing when you learn that the entire Fantastic Dizzy series is in one place, as well as several of the Oliver Twins’ unreleased NES games?

This is a console dedicated entirely to the games you rented from a convenience store when all the copies of Mega Man 3 were gone. I completely love that.

My copy is on route from the Primeval Jungles of the Amazon as we speak. And I’ve been giving a serious side-eye to the second Namco Museum (been curious as to whether or not Weaponlord has stood the test of time).

Also, the Lynx collections are out in a couple of weeks. The Lynx!

Not even CLOSE Octo. It lacks MANY A FINE DIZZY. But it does collect all the NES ones, so hooray!!

My Evercade broke, and Blaze replaced it. The replacement is also broken. Apparently this is very, very rare. I believe them. The customer service has been fantastic, frankly.

Which versions of them, though? The PC and SNES versions of Drakken had wild differences; the SNES and Genesis versions of Dragonview (the latter being the one that was ported to Steam) also have notable differences. Which ones did they put on this cart?

One of the things I love the most about Evercade is their willingness to include the best versions of games; so you get Mega Drive Earthworm Jim, and SNES Earthworm Jim 2.

That's a funny way of spelling "Windows 95 Earthworm Jim Special Edition" but maybe Big Bruty wasn't to your tastes

Wait, I thought there was only one version of Dragon View? (Fantastic game, by the way.)

If my reading comprehension skills have not failed me, Madhair mentions there’s been a recent firmware update to this delightful little Video Contraption. I was only aware of the initial one that moved the console from “a nice try” to “indispensable for lovers of weird video games”. We’re there any others?

I kind of hope not since updating this thing is really unintuitive

There have been two so far. The most recent one adds "Maximum" brightness setting (much better) and improves state saves etc.

Then I guess this ol’ hoss has made himself a fun little project of trying to figure this nonsense out again when he gets home.

I demand the utmost fidelity from Fantastic Dizzy, thank you.

Updates about this little, weird-ass good boy.

There’s an Evercade console in the works, called the Evercade VS, for everyone who is eager to enjoy the multiplayers games on this thing and wants an exponentially larger screen. It’s also got a minor slew of other upgrades (like a wifi connection) and it can also hold two cartridges at a time.

It can’t play the Namco Museum games though, because this thing never zigs when it can zag.

Also, the first PS1 game has been announced for the system. And because this is the Evercade, what else could it be but Speedball 2100! Alongside the previous two Speedball games (on SMS and Mega Drive) and Xenon 2 and The Chaos Engine, as part of the Bitmap Brothers collection.

Also also; there was another Firmware update a few weeks ago that makes the emulators run a little better and includes rom patches for some of the bugs the previous releases had.

The Evercade! It’s Still Baffling

Speaking of weird compilations, the games they put on the Legends Gamer Pro have got to be up there. You get a large chunk of titles from Taito (Bubble Bobble! Space Invaders! Zoo Keeper?), along with arcade games from Data East and Jaleco.

Then Disney comes along and dumps a bunch of its own games in your lap, but not the Capcom or Sega ones you really wanted to play. The Super NES Star Wars games? Zombies Ate My Neighbors? Fix-It Felix!? The one game missing that would actually fit is Tron... apparently you'd have to buy a more expensive AtGames product for that one.

Then Piko Interactive finishes up with games it apparently swept up from the floor of the abandoned IP warehouse. Are you ready for store brand The Punisher clone Iron Commando? How about Switchblade II? Well, you're getting 'em anyway. Better get used to it.

The next Evercade release has been announced and it is a doozy.

The only release to rival it in terms of dooz is the first Piko Collection

Oh neat, I'll be able to relive all those moments in Nick Arcade where kids struggled to reach the high scores (or struggled to even comprehend) El Viento and Arcus Odyssey.
