Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).

  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.

  • Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

I'm looking to hand off management of these monthly upcoming games threads to someone else. You would get the honor of authoring these opening posts and, if you like, changing how the show is run overall. Feel free to toss your hat in the ring or indicate what level of interest you might have.

Most of what strikes my fancy this month are things that look like things I already really like;

ruling the roost for me this month is definitely Egglia, which is effectively Legend of Mana, except an SRPG.

Infernaxe looks to be trying to capture Simons Quest, but without that pesky Castlevania liscense.

And Ocean Heart is a Zelda, and I like Zelda’s.

Not looking like things I already like;
Monster Prom 2 isn’t even in a genre I give the time of day to, but I took one look at the dialogue and premise of a competitive dating sim where the end goal is to Smooch Spooky Munsters and I said “Oh dip! This amuses me greatly”. True story.
Atelier Sophie 2 is another Atelier game and I normally don’t really connect with those, but the crafting looks much more comprehensible than in the other games in the series I tried, and I always did want to enjoy them so WHO KNOWS?!?

Pretty sure everyone here knows what Elden Ring is, but in keeping with the spirit of the thread: It's From's latest butt-poke and dodge-roll simulator. This time with a horsey friend and worldbuilding by Mr. Throne Games himself!

I have not been this hype for a game in years.

Never heard of this before. This looks neat.

February games aside from Elden Ring? It seems like most of my complaints with the first game have been addressed, so Horizon: Forbidden West is on the docket for this month. Between those two, and now Infernaxe, seems like quite enough before my wallet is crushed in March.

Elden Ring and Horizon: Forbidden West are looking to upend my world and my freetime. Still can't find a fucking PS5 though. Anyone know if either of them is cross-PS-platform?

Like if I get the PS4 version and start on PS4, and later get a PS5,
1. would I have to buy the game again?
2. regardless, would my progress from PS4 transfer to the PS5 along with my account and such?

According to the Playstation store, both of them will get you the PS5 upgrade for free. However, for Horizon I'm a little confused; on the PS5 version page it says if you already own the PS4 version then you don't need to buy it, but also the PS5 version costs $10 more? So... that doesn't make sense to me.

Elden Ring is more obvious because its store listing says "Elden Ring PS4 & PS5" which is what other games I've bought also say when there's both versions of the game.

There are no video games, there is only Elden Ring. I'm going to take the month to clear up as much of my schedule as possible, and then I am going to play a ton of Elden Ring

Beyond that tho, I bought a new PC so I'll be refraining from too much else this month.

First-party PS5 games generally cost $10 more. Sony is hoping you forgot about the free upgrade thing which, apparently, is the last time this kind of thing will be offered.

Wow I have not heard of this game but yep the art and the map things are exactly it. Crazy.

I don't have a PS4 so I can't get it but I am keeping my eye on Horizon Forbidden West. I was really, really bad at the first game but the world and Aloy were just so cool.

I'm also curious about Maglam Lord, where you're the last demon of your kind and need to find a mate, but also fight battles and craft stuff? Could be a dud but also seems entertaining.

Oh and Meredith Gran (Octopus pie) has a game coming out called Perfect Tides. Point and click adventure games are not my thing but I hope it does well.

So a weird month of games I probably won't buy soon but am interested in playing someday I guess?

And it turns out there’s a sequel to Boice of Cards coming out already, Voice of Cards: The Frozen Maiden, and the original was a really good stripped down JRPG, and I can only assume the sequel is as well.

Turns out that the games whole general aesthetic vibes really cut down on the games budget and production time

Will probably get Voice of Cards.

I am interested in Elden Ring, but since Triangle Strategy comes out like a week after it and I'm more interested in that, I'll probably hold off.

Horizon: Forbidden West is definitely in "wait until it's 20 bucks" territory.

When they announced the Final Fantasy Pixel Remake series, I had a hankering to replay 6. I therefore am looking forward to Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remake, which was delayed to February.

I'm going to have to push back on some of this enthusiasm:

Egglia was a mobile game. And it looks like this new Egglia has a lot of that mobile gacha DNA still in it. Please don't pin your hopes on it too hard.

Monster Prom 2 has actually been out for over a year! I am about to put a couple of asterisks in front of it as a cishet whiteboy. But if none of this is a deal breaker, I'd recommend getting it: Because it is very good!

It is the kind of game where monstrous things happen pretty often! Like, engaging in capitalism! Or propping up a monarchy (though this happens more in the original Monster Prom)! But also it is the kind of game that wants you to know that if your pronouns are "They/them" they want you to be seen and respected.

It's also aggressively horny and salacious. Even compared to its predecessor, where one of the routes to win the game involves helping someone do a "Reverse Romanian Wilkinson".

This is true, but it was a paid mobile game and not a F2P one. Granted, there's definitely some gacha-y feeling stuff in there, so it'll be interesting to see how the Switch edition handles that.

Definitely a game I'm looking forward to on Switch but I know to temper my expectations. It has the look of Legend of Mana, but the gameplay and tone are very different.

I didn't research it, but when I played the US version it sure felt like they had free-to-pay hooks in there leftover from the Japanese version.

That said: I did play it a whole lot while there was intermittent downtime on a wedding excursion. And then I fell off of it and didn't migrate my data to the offline version.
