Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).

  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.

  • Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

I'm getting Bravely Default II, the JRPG that is not the sequel to Bravely Default, which was Bravely Second; this is a different Bravely, one that I hope will not make me Default on it II much.

Outside of that, I'll be considering Ghosts N' Goblins Resurrection, which looks like a title in the franchise I might actually be able to make some progress in thanks to some difficulty options, and plan to get the full Capcom Arcade Stadium, so I can do my part to prod Capcom to support it after the initial launch with more games.

I'm probably getting it too, although I do have quite a backlog built up so I may not get on release. I may end up waiting till later in the year.

Aside from the big two people have mentioned here (Mario, Bravely), 30XX hits Steam early access in the middle of the month and I'm keeping a close eye on it. I'm less interested in the randomly generated levels - part of the fun of any Mega Man for me is actually knowing what's ahead, so I can maximize routing (gotta go fast) - and more interested in that there is supposed to be a "Mega Mode" with saves and static levels.

February is really "4-So Gets Equipped With A New House" month so I've been a bit gun shy about ordering new games, for various reasons.

As much as I'm tempted to get Ys IX: Monstrum Nox on PS4, I'm holding out for the moment for the Switch version being good. Instead, I've got Persona 5 Strikers on preorder for when it comes out on the 23rd.

Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, definitely. I want Bravely Default 2 but I haven't played Bravely Second yet, and even though they're not related I still kinda feel like I should hit that first, y'know? Plus I can already sense that buying BD2 would be "put it on the extensive backlog pile and I'll get around to it in a few years" so I think maybe I'll hold off for now.

I was always interested in the original but never took the plunge because the paper-doll style graphics just did not work for me. This looks... better.

February is shaping up to be a pretty hefty month, so far the games on my list are:
Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury - Like Pikmin 3 I missed out on this one when it first released on the Wii U so I'm looking forward to giving it a go.
Persona 5 Strikers - Even though I've never finished Persona 5 on the PS3 I'm sure reading a quick synopsis will be fine and so far early impressions sound good.
Bravely Default 2 - I really enjoyed the first two Bravely games on the 3DS and Octopath Traveler on the Switch so this one is a definite purchase.
Ghosts N' Goblins Resurrection - I had fun playing this games predecessors on the NES and SNES apps and the storybook art style caught my eye so barring any bad impressions this is on my list.
Capcom Arcade Stadium - Initially I was disappointed that this collection made the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle redundant, but I like all the little customizable options they are including in this collection and I'm fine with the lack of online multiplayer since I never used it in any previous classic collection that had the feature.

This a big skip-month for me. P5 Strikers is interesting to me, but as it's a sequel to a game I didn't play it's a no-go. I would have played a P5 adaptation into a Musou game where you left the slice-of-life sections intact and replaced the grindy rpg dungeons w/ musou combat in a heartbeat though.

I didn't realize Ys IX was dropping this month. Not sure if I'm going to jump on it immediately or not. Same with Bravely Default 2 - even my modern backlog is enormous right now. But those are the two that will get purchased, no question.

Also, Super Mario 3D World is fantastic, so if you didn't play it, you need to now.[/b]

Did anyone play the Bravely Default 2 demo? How is the combat? And the removal of random encounters?

Overall, I worry that the elimination of random encounters from JRPGs has been a big mistake. It kind of ruined Dragon Quest XI for me. And the "strike at the monster's back to get an advantage!" mechanic used by many games is pretty lousy IMO. Always feels klunky and seems more of a penalty for missing it than an advantage.

The combat is essentially the same as the rest of the Bravely games. Moving to field enemies is a value-neutral change for me personally, although to speak to your final point: if you get attacked from behind by a monster then they start with 1 BP, and if you attack them first then you start with 1 BP. There's also a mechanic where you can chain together multiple monsters on the map to get an extra amount of EXP and JP, but you have to fight each group as a gauntlet which can make it kind of tough.

Bravely Default 1 (and Bravely Second) had round-based Dragon Quest turn structure where you enter all your commands up front and watch them execute. Bravely Default II switches to Final Fantasy style turn structure where characters take their turn immediately, and it gives you a warning indicator if an enemy's turn is approaching soon so you can be tactical without having total foreknowledge of turn order. My impression of the demo is that this property makes the game a bit more difficult, but you'll get better with practice.

I've played a bit of Octopath Traveller and it seemed so souless to me. Pretty, but boring. I also couldn't get into Bravely Default. So yeah, i'm not excited about Bravely Default II.

I am excited about finally playing Super Mario 3D World.

A Green Man Gaming e-mail has informed me of a new game Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood coming out tomorrow. It's an action roleplaying game where you are a werewolf, based on World of Darkness material. If this game is Bad, that's okay, I don't think I should get it yet anyway. For now I'll just note the werewolf is hot when human and I think it's cute when his lil wolf form dashes forward.

The MiSTer CPS2 core has just entered beta and, knowing its creator, will expand rapidly over the course of the month! So you'll probably catch me playing lost of awesome arcade fighting games and shooters as are added into the core.
