Talking about Mina the Hollower, Yacht Club's next digging-adjacent adventure!

Link's Awakening is my favorite Zaldo, so I am super excited for YC's take on it.

Looks cool. Kind of side eyeing Yacht Club going back to Kickstarter though, considering they have the money now to make Shovel Knight sequels and help publish other devs games. I imagine they just doing it for the free advertising.

I don't think Secret of NIMH was an inspiration; yet this is clearly the story of how Mrs. Brisby became a whip-cracking vampire hunter.

Yeah, launching a crowdfunding campaign really rubs me the wrong way, since they're pitching it as a a way to get community involvement— as if forums and/or Discord servers don't exist. If they really do need the extra bit of cash, then I won't begrudge them, but I would have preferred they were upfront about that instead of dressing it up in PR nonsense.

The game looks neat, and I'll be keeping an eye on it, but I think I'll pass on the Kickstarter.

Speaking as someone whose game used KS to help kickstart development, board games have been using Kickstarter as a pre-order system for several years now, including from publishers who are about the equivalent to Yacht Club in the tabletop space (and some bigger then that, too!). I don't see why video games can't do the same thing.

The blockchain thing is totally reasonable though and why I won't be backing as well.

The tiers aren’t especially vile. The game will prolly retail for ~30USD, which would net you the early digital soundtrack along with the game. A nice bonus for pre-ordering, basically, which was why I was thinking of backing it.

But Fuck Blockchain Bullshit.

This game was made in a lab specfically for me, good LORD. "Hey do you like the Game Boy Zeldas and also Castlevania?" Strawman, who do you think I am?!

The game's Kickstarter said:
Smooth 60fps action combat, a world full of mystery and horror, and top-down adventuring combine in a mix that may remind you of classic titles like Castlevania, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, or even Bloodborne.

FUCK YOU JUST GIVE IT TO ME STOP PLAYING THESE GAMES. I already told you I would pay, and I quote, "handsomely".

Also good to know Kickstarter sucks shit now too ughhhhhhhhhh

Really glad to see Yacht Club finally working on a totally new thing, even if top-down Zelda isn't nearly as "my shit" as a Mega Man clone. I don't think I'm gonna hop on the Kickstarter, though.

Yeah, I don't think I'm doing the Kickstarter. It's funded, it'll come out, I'm happy with that. This might be more my bag than even Shovel Knight was.

So, a more action-y take on Links Awakening, I guess? Looks very fun, and after enjoying everything about Shovel Knight and its three expansions, I basically trust them blindly, to create a good game.

I can understand tabletop game makers continuing to depend on crowdfunding, as that is a smaller industry where the manufacturing/distribution costs are greater and it would be prudent to have a pre determined count on the initial print run.

Here meanwhile in all likelihood we are talking about a digital first release in a much larger market, which is where a critical/commercial darling who themselves have gotten into publishing doing it is raising my eyebrow.

This looks sick as hell and I want it immediately (not gonna do the Kickstarter though, because fuck a blockchain).

The $20 tier which gets you a copy of the game is probably less than the final cost will be so that's a reason to back I suppose. If they do release the final game for $20 or less that would be pretty cool.

I'll wait for a sale.

I Kickstarted a Root expansion that will be arriving in the next month or two. I think I'm done with Kickstarter after that.

I was working yesterday so when I got home and found out about it, it was 2,000 dollars from being funded. So yeah, it's nice that I don't have to use Kickstarter, but it'll also kinda suck for Yacht Club if it doesn't get funded as well as Shovel Knight did because of this. I know they'll just make money later with full release, but I wonder how/if it'll affect their plans internally?
