Sunsoft is Back, Baby! (Yes, really, THAT Sunsoft.)

Ikki coming back at all, as a multiplayer-oriented Vampire Survivors genre clone no less, is the absolute funniest resolution this could have had. Apt, but extremely funny.

Not what I expected to come out of Embracer's recent IP gobbling, but a pleasant surprise nonetheless!

Between this and Ikki, I wonder what else this showcase is going to have (and apparently leak early)

A version of Gimmick actually coming out in North America WITH rewind is better than I honestly dared hoped from this Sunsoft presentation, so I guess it's already a winner despite not happening yet.

If this doesn't have the incredibly creepy redone intro from the arcade version, then that's yet another bonus!

Only one major announcement that wasn't revealed prior Hebereke rerelease, but imho it's worth seeing for the Gonbei vtuber.

Still thinking a day later about how the presenter literally said "Sunsoft is back, baby!!" Really an impressive amount of confidence for someone speaking without an interpreter.

idk why, but the guy attributing their fallow period to "grown-up things" is really funny to me.

I think it's interesting how much they're aware of the overseas popularity of their games, particularly Gimmick!

They teased at the end that they had like 4 things they didn't have quite ready to announce, including an unspecified ~remake~. I feel like American audiences might guess it's gonna be Journey to Silius or (more wishfully) Batman, but I think Atlantis no Nazo is the more likely than either.

Personally, I'm holding out hope for an Inti Creates developed Fester's Quest reboot trilogy that combines the top down action of Blaster Master with the first-person shooting of Gal-- ...wait, nevermind.

Weren't they "back" in 2010 with Blaster Master: Overdrive on WiiWare?

Did they do anything after that?

Beyond licensing Blaster Master to Inti Creates, rereleasing their old games on Nintendo platforms, and some Japan only mobile development, they've been pretty quiet between Overdrive and now.

It's really cool to see Gimmick come back. It's one of those famous Famicom games that I've heard nothing but great things about but have never actually played.

I have heard that it has a really high difficulty though, so maybe I shouldn't be too excited to play it lol. Regardless, the music is phenomenal.

The first few stages of Gimmick aren't that hard. In fact, I'd claim that the normal (bad) ending isn't too unreasonable compared to many other NES games.

Where the game really bares its fangs is when you try to go for the good ending. The tricks you need to perform require complete mastery of your moveset (not an exaggeration), and IIRC you need to complete the game 1CC. I've never been able to do it myself.

Yeah, it's going for the good ending that's really tough. I've only gotten it through save states.

It's good to know that the game isn't too hard then! Was kinda worried it'd just be classic NES/Famicom hard to the point where it's impossible without memorizing everything.

Luckily the new port will have rewind and save states, so it should mitigate frustration (at least for me, haha).

Fearful asymmetry
Mr. Gimmick is never as easy as the game it resembles, Kirby. You see this cute game with a round green character, and you think, "Oh, it's like Kirby! This will be a fun jaunt!" Then you find out that he's affected by gravity and drops like a stone and has to ride his own projectile as it bounces toward him just to jump up to a higher level, and you think, "This ain't Kirby. This game doesn't fuck around right out of the starting game."

I hope you learned a lesson about stereotyping round colorful characters, sir.

A lesson I should have learned after playing Whipseey and the Lost Atlas. At least I could FINISH that one.

This is all just reminding me how much of a bummer it is that YouTube deleted annotations, because Frank Cifialdi did a lovely annotated 1cc of Gimmick! in like 2009 (he played emulated at like 50% speed, then sped the video up to normal speed, iirc, which is also how he did all the pro-plays on the SNK 40th Collection), but it's, uh, useless and doesn't work now.

EDIT: Some lovely soul re-created it with subtitles.
