Sunsoft is Back, Baby! (Yes, really, THAT Sunsoft.)

So this is happening. They're having a thing this week to unveil whatever they've got on tap. For my part, I really hope a movie tie-in with The Batman that's a sequel to NES Batman.

They still owe the world a proper sequel to Waku Waku 7, and I don't mean frickin' Astra Superstars. (Also, no Aero the Acro-bat comebacks. Two games and a spin-off were plenty.)

My brain-head says “Well, it’s going to be another Blaster Master game, naturally” and my heart says “Oh, that’d be nice, I love Blaster Master”

And they’re both right, of course.

But heck, why not Solarman?

Hoping for a wider, non-arcade-exclusive release for the Gimmick! remake, at least. But my heart aches for The Wing of Madoola to return to us.

Hmm… Blaster Master Zero 2 was basically a Gimmick/Ikki/Atlantis No Nazo crossover, so I could see Wings of Madoola and Valis mashing together

I would gladly, gladly accept a sequel to either of those games.

There's a smattering of related aerial fighters in Astra Superstars's mold, but the most directly inspired, enduring and widely played are probably the second trilogy of official Touhou fighters by Twilight Frontier--Hopeless Masquerade, Urban Legend in Limbo and Antinomy of Common Flowers. They carry on the template faithfully while evolving that niche of unconventional fighting games in their own right.

I understand the Touhou series has witches covered, but do any of those unconventional fighting games let you fight Santa Claus? Or, barring that, the anime girl equivalent of Santa Claus?

... I am legitimately asking, I know the Touhou series has a pretty deep bench...

No Santas, but you do end up squaring off against a pair of gods embodying the bubble economy and subsequent financial destitution.

I am actually more interested if this thing will feature anything from Telenet that they acquired over a decade ago.
They sold the Nihon Telenet IP to Edia, who have been doing quite a bit with those games in the last two years.

Anyway, I'm curious what this might lead to.

So this is a case where the original is still extremely dead but someone with money to throw around bought their dead body so they could say "HEY REMEMBER THEM THEY'RE TOTALLY HERE" right?

Sort of like how Radio Shack's Carcass is now being commanded by the "THIS IS MY GARAGE IT HAS 7 LAMBOS" dipshit to sell crypto scams.

While I won't discount the possibility of Sunsoft NFTs (ew), Sun Corporation (Sunsoft's parent company) has managed to continue existing this entire time, so at the very least it's not someone else storming in and using the IP for dubious purposes.

Whatever is happening here, I hope it turns out better than the era that brought us Blaster Master: Overdrive.

I do have some skepticism about this, but given how the Blaster Master Zero trilogy turned out I am slightly hopeful that we'll get some good games out of this.

I do find it interesting that they mentioned Batman NES in their press release.

It opens with an 8bit cutscene.

Ledger's Joker fades in and poses a single question.

"Why So Sirius?"

Boom. Journey to Sirius 2.

I would broadly just be down for a M2-made collection of Sunsoft NES games.

Nope, this is the same original Sun Electronics Corporation just saying "hey, we're gonna make us some videogames again."

Uncle Fester relaxes with a beverage in his lawn chair.

Then, something flies overhead. Fester lowers his sunglasses to get a better look.

A biplane!

Boom. Sky Kid 2.

(Psst, you're ruining the punchline!)

I'm of mixed minds about Sunsoft's return. The sweet spot for them was clearly the NES. I think they went into an agreement with Acclaim in the 16-bit days, and it clearly hurt their output. Can they reach those NES-era highs in the year 2022? If they want to do that, they'd better keep Inti Creates' number on speed dial. "Hey, you guys. We need a Route 16 sequel, pronto. What do you mean there's not enough game there to justify a sequel? Find one."

Do you require aid.

For some reason the only IP I can think of that is a Sunsoft property is Porky Pig's Nightmare Vacation or whatever.

I've just finished some extensive* research into SunSoft's back catalogue, and I think I've cracked the code.

It's gonna be an announcement for the Switch port of the 2020 mobile classic, Rolling Animals:

Thank me later.
