So Steam has this Survival Sale going on! And I've been looking for something like Subnautica since I finished playing Subnautica: Sub Zero. I figured it might be useful to do some crowdsourcing here on TT. Do you like Survival games? Have you played any of the ones that are sale? Which ones do you recommend for fans of the genre?

Or people who are just fans of Subnautica and have been looking for something like it!

Also interested in this. Don’t starve is about as close as I’ve found to scratching the itch but it’s a pretty different beast aesthetically.

Planet Crafter looks like it might be just the thing. But it is still in Early Access and I'm always a little shy about getting those games and playing them while incomplete.

I don't really play survival games but the kiddos like The Long Dark, and my immediate impression of Subnautica has been "The Long Dark, but in water"

Also Frostpunk is a very "no good choices" survival strategy game if you want to decide whether it's better to force children or the sick to work in the cold to preserve the existence of your ragtag band of survivors huddled around a giant furnace

What I really love about Subnautica is that (1) you’re trying to survive in some really beautiful places and (2) in the process of surviving, you build totally awesome stuff. Are there any other games like that? No Man’s Sky is on my list to play soon.

Sorry, this isn't a genre I've gotten into. I watched my spouse play Subnautica and it just looked like stressful micromanaging, and the bits of others that I've played also just left me unhappy with the time spent on them.

I guess the Flame and the Flood might count? I definitely had to step away from it a lot and the survival parts wore thin to me but I did enjoy it.

No Man's Sky is another game that has been sitting in my backlog but I've been worried to play it as it seems the game is still getting huge updates that alter the play significantly quite often.

Despite being sort of diametrically opposed on the environmentalism front, Satisfactory actually gives me pretty strong Subnautica vibes. You’re exploring a gorgeous alien planet filled with hostile fauna, but your goal is to…systematically strip resources from the environment. There isn’t a story in the game yet, but mechanically it is extremely robust and I had a great time with it.
