Sons of the Beach - Death Stranding connection thread

(I searched and no existing DS thread? If I'm wrong uh.... I'm sorry.)

Death Stranding 2 launch trailer just hit and it's bonkers and the game is coming out bonkers soon and maybe we'll want to talk about it. here's a thread.

Me? I'm just gonna spoil a big ol' theory.

I think Kojima tipped his hand a bit too far with Faked Snake in this one. Clearly taking over Cliff's role from the first game, which heavily suggests he will be Lou's biodad if the motifs from DS1 hold. I theorize rather than stages based on US military actions (Cliff in DS1) Faked Snake will borrow from Kojima's MGS game settings.

Was Death Stranding…good? I feel Kojima’s games peaked in the PS2 era, as did most games, and heard very divisive things about DS.

I haven't played Death Stranding. I watched videos about it because it was Hideo Kojima and the trailers were really intriguing.

It doesn't look like it would be a fun game and even the story as I could discern is bonkers nonsense. If you treat it as an avant-garde art piece however, its super interesting. Kojima and his team wanted to make something unique and different and that's exactly what they did. To the dismay of a lot of people.

That's the real thing. Since the gameplay consists of traversing an open-world blasted heath delivering packages the story needs to be intriguing enough or you need a fun role to slip into the shoes of (ie: a solid snake) but without those things its hard to get excited about dropping 50 or 60 bucks on a multi hour trudge-a-thon. I don't deny it has a certain appeal but I don't think its for me.

Ironically I watched videos to learn about Death Stranding before I dived into Metal Gear Solid.

DS does very interesting things with its mechanics and in a broader sense, video games as a medium. But whether or not you found it “fun” is a separate, ymmv question.

People who love it really love it.

I haven't decided on it yet. I played some, it didn't super grab me, but I keep wanting to go back and try some more.

I will say this about Death Stranding. You might think a game about delivering bulky packages across a wasteland sounds boring. I thought the same thing. It wasn't. I had a lot of fun finding the best way to get my cargo to its destination. It was an interesting and unique experience. You might not like it, but I did. Where I thought the game was more lacking was when it did action and story stuff. Whenever I was going somewhere and the game was like, okay now it's time to worry about invisible monsters, I was having less fun. And you are forced into more combat near the end that just didn't do much for me. There's interesting world building, and some cool payoffs, but overall I thought the story had a lot of Kojima's flaws without many of his strengths. I am very interested in checking out the second game.

If you like wandering Hyrule in BotW/TotK then you will enjoy Death Stranding's gameplay. It has a lot of "things just there to discover" and "satisfaction that my weird traversal plan worked". It has situations only abstracted in similar games, such as rushing rapids near a waterfall, that feel more harrowing because of the Kojima touches.

It also has his style of characters if you like that. If you'd like a story universe where every single human being you meet is an MGS boss, it's the game for you.

It doesn't have a ton of "STORY" per se.

the DS2 trailer implies there will be more story this time. Is it smoke and mirrors for a trailer? Maybe! Maybe not. But I platinum'd the first one so I'm gonna find out.

Man it would have been so good if it had just been delivering packages across unreasonable terrain, and not like, throwing pee at a shark.
