Marathon started off with a banger: check out Rubiehart's Shadow of the Colossus run if you missed it. Great energy and commentary, lots of fun.

The run that just finished, Rolled Out, isn't a game I'd ever heard of before, but it was super entertaining. Recommended if you like very fast and technical stuff like Super Monkey Ball.

No one who's seen my post history will be surprised that I'm super excited about the Super Mario World blind kaizo race on Friday night. Six of some of the best SMW players will be racing (in teams of three) to clear brand new levels from some of the most creative and talented people in the community. Kaizo SMW had a big showing at a 2019 GDQ event (including one of these races), which is how I got interested in kaizo in the first place, so this should be really good.

Oh hey, the FF6 randomizer is getting a run, I'll have to watch that.

Shame there doesn't seem to be a TASBlock this time, unless like two TAS runs count?

I find the TASes considerably less engaging from a (relatively) casual viewer perspective so I'm not too heartbroken. The only real saving grace was the theatrics of TAS Bot and some of the wild code injection stuff.

Just watching a TAS kind of felt like watching a video recording. Just let some real life runner play already!

Still, very much enjoying the marathon. Great game selection so far.

On the other end of the Kaizo spectrum, oatsandgoats will be playing 'Kaizo Super Metroid" right after Dread on Saturday. Unlike modern SMW kaizo-style hacks, which are tight, creative, polished, and aesthetically appealing torture devices, SM Kaizo ("Possible Edition") is an ancient, crusty old mess of a troll-hack that makes SM Impossible seem decent. I guarantee that it will be a deliciously, exquisitely terrible viewing experience.

(There are other, newer, better kaizo-style SM hacks, but nothing remotely comparable in quality to the stuff the SMW community generates.)

I knew nothing about Kaizo Super Metroid before this and was looking forward to it based on the title alone. Now I'm even more excited.

I don't normally watch these, but when I saw Link's Awakening I had to check in, and then seeing that ICO was up next meant I had to stick around.

Oh neat, I watch oatsngoats's videos now and then, mostly his Varia rando stuff but I did catch his most recent personal best on Kaizo SM, it'd be interesting to see him do it live. And especially to see him do it in an environment where he isn't interacting with his chat, because while I enjoy his playing I have little patience for his usual bits and voices he does in response his chat.

Anyone know how they got so far behind schedule? The kaizo SMW race I mentioned above was originally set for 11:45 PM EST tonight, but I just checked to see what else was happening today and somehow now it's happening at 3 AM instead. I feel bad for the runners.

They are so far behind schedule that they've had a couple of runners voluntarily withdraw runs, such as TheBlacktastic's Bloodstained run.

Wow, that's really a shame. What even happened?

ETA: did some digging and it sounds like a lot of the setups just took way more time than they planned for. I know nothing about what their tech setups are like, and I'm sure these events are a logistical nightmare at the best of times, so I certainly am not qualified to say anything else about it.

At one point the stream went down during a run. The finale is now set to 330 am on Sunday, which is late even for a GDQ.

I've completely missed this one this year. I blame it on a combinations of sonic origins and just enough of a cold to drain my energy the past few days

I really wanted to catch the KQV run, but I missed it. I'd love to see a solid adventure game block at some point, but I can understand its not the biggest eye ball getter.

Also, I just noticed Super Metroid is missing from the run this year (the Kaizo doesn't count) I can remember when that was a huge draw.

I guess super metroid speedruns have gotten so competitive that nobody can pull them off any more

It might be the issues with running a hybrid event with both remote and local runners? I presume that ratchets the complexity up a lot.

As for VOD recommendations, Happy's Humble Burger Farm was highly entertaining. I dunno about the speed tech, but the runner and the game provided an amazing 30 minutes of weirdness.

If execution was a worry, we wouldn't be getting Kaizo SM this year. :V

The more likely issue is that there's only so many times you can run the same handful of categories before it gets stale, and so all of the top runners are kind of tired of it. I mean, wasn't there a GDQ recently with no SM whatsoever?

Personally, I would have preferred if they went with the SM Redesign run somebody has tried submitting for the past few GDQs. The runner (azder) has run it for some smaller time marathons, and I would highly recommend you check out a VoD of it if you're interested.

I mean I'm used to seeing runs when they happen as the prime event at the end of the marathon where at least half the runners wipe out partway through, and they don't re-route for safety saves

"Kill the animals? Save the frames?"

"No... kill the runners..."

I think they didn't bring it in to keep things varied every year. It's one thing to play Mega Man 2, for example, it's another thing to play Wiley Wars version of Mega Man 2. Changing things up makes it more interesting.

Don't sleep on the VOD of SpikeVegeta and Nukkuler's co-op OOT Rando run. Super fun and funny, great energy and commentary from both of them.
