Resident Evil 4 Remake (2023)

It's official! It's also a game that 100% doesn't need a remake, but Capcom is on a roll with the series lately, so I'm here for it. Thoughts?

I mean, the Steam version is still super good, especially if you apply the fan-made graphics mod to it. Which is why, as said, it definitely doesn't need a remake.

...Imma play it anyway, though. >_>

my thoughts is that this might end up a bit of a mess because my friend's friend's friend's uncle's cousin's sister-in-law's mother's doctor's daughter works/ed for capcom and said they changed development directions about halfway through to make it more true to the original after the relatively tepid response to the REmak3.

I'm excited for it. I've always liked RE4, but I consider it the inflection point for the series.

1-3 and 0 feel like adventure / survival horror games.

4-6 feel like action / survival horror games.

(I have not played 7 and 8 yet)

I'm firmly prefer the adventure game feel of the earlier entries. REmake is my favorite Resident Evil game. However, RE4 is great game and very fun.

I would be down for replaying RE4, especially if the rumors of the story being reworked to be more scary are true.

I don't know how people feel about this. But I would love if REmake 4 would jettison the Quick Time Events. I hate QTEs.

This tells me you should definitely play 7 and maybe 8. But definitely definitely 7.

And yes, 100% to getting rid of QTEs. And while I'm kind of with you on making it scarier, I do absolutely love quippy action hero Leon (hence the thread title), and I'm not sure I want to lose that? On the other hand, my feeling about movie remakes is that there's only a reason to do it if you're going to do something different, so maybe going in NOT that direction is a good idea.

Also, wrt to the fan mod for RE4 HD, Jacob Geller did a fantastic video on it.

I don't know that it needs to be scarier. As Kishi once said: "I don't know what gaming's Citizen Kane is, but RE4 is its Big Trouble in Little China". I like that about it.

I will get to 7 and 8 at some point.

I've waited so long to play 7, I think I might as well wait for the PS5 port to come out. I think REmake 2-3 and 7 are rumored to be coming to PS5.

On paper the near term future for horror gaming looks bright: REmake 4, Callisto Protocol and Dead Space are all confirmed to be coming out. Rumors persist Silent Hill games. And Slitterhead looks interesting to me.

Nothing more true to the original than changing development directions halfway through

I'm willing to check out a remake of 4, which regardless of outcome will remain one of the best action games ever made

RE 4 Remake should be a stealth new title that has you go through all the prototype concepts for RE 4.

Like Voncaster I prefer the earlier Resident Evil games (7 is excellent, by the way), but I'm also too curious and too much of a fan to be anything but cautiously optimistic about this game. I'm curious about the tone - I've a lot of misgivings about 8 but I thought the one thing it did very well was split the difference between humor and scares to try and match the goofier bits of RE4. OTOH, the RE2 remake went a little too far in trying to be more serious which made certain subplots feel more like c-grade Walking Dead episodes (mostly referring to Robert Kendo and Chief Irons). Regardless, I'm sure it'll be interesting enough to warrant the game's existence, bad or good!

This comes out Friday, so here's a thread...

This trailer finally got me on board, at last. Really excited to play this one.

Played to the first merchant. This game seems to be hitting a sweet spot of nostalgia and surprising changes.

Played up to just before Del Lago -- remarkable that all the pieces are here but they've been rearranged in a way that is both clever and makes logical sense. Definitely don't think every change is for the better, pacing could be zippier, but it's interesting so far in vein similar to a really great fan mod. Excited to see more.

Finished this on Hardcore. Just like the original, it's alright. I may even prefer it because the new play physics and mechanical nuances trade the almost surgical precision of the original to a looser and more chaotic scramble, at least on this initial playthrough when all of it is subject to a process of internalization and learning. Contributing to that is that Hardcore claims it's for people who've played the original game, but leaves the intent of that statement hazy--in my experience it's both underselling the difficulty of that particular mode, and assuming familiarity with the original would somehow aid one here, in a game where all play mechanics, enemy behaviour or any specific you care to outline at all differ entirely in practice. Prior context or not, it's tough enough that many sections of the game--more than the original ever pushed me--became a frantic struggle which only improved my impression of the game since it helped sell the premise that RE4 has traditionally been sold on. In this form or another, this is still a game I don't feel strongly about, which to me signals that those that love the original will find much to appreciate here, in the by now established series remake style of painstaking authenticity one moment and deliberate curveballs and remixing of known material to cheekily upend expectations the next.

Yeah, Hardcore is quite a lot. I played up until the merchant, and I’ve died many times. Any good tips for getting through, since I probably can’t rely on my old strategies?

I'm playing on standard difficulty despite having finished the original more than once and it's giving me quite the handful. Not dying constantly but it's pushing me.

Finished this. Good game. I'd be happy with the whole REmake trend if it ended now.

I haven't finished it yet, and I am loving it, but I'm with you on that last bit. The engine is great but this style of game is starting to get a little bit long in the tooth after 7, 2, 3, 8 and now 4.

I haven't finished this yet, as it dropped when I've been very busy with other life stuff, but I finished the Right Hand fight, and I am loving it so far.

In terms of the remake trend, it's hard to see where exactly they go from here, but I'd be lying if I didn't say they're still managing to put out bangers and I frankly feel like both Code: Veronica AND Zero could stand a big-time facelift, for multiple reasons. I simply don't see them attempting to put a gloss on 5, let alone 6, so either they go all-original from here, remake the original REmake, or, yeah, CV or Zero.

I haven’t played a Resident Evil game since 6, so my say doesn’t really matter. But, I feel like Code Veronica deserves another shot at an audience. I enjoyed it on Dreamcast, anyhow.

There's no reason they can't go back to CV and Zero after they skipped them to do 4, but it would just seem odd to me.

I finished it tonight. Despite it making some smart gameplay changes, I think I like RE4: Remake the least out of all the New RE games. It does make some A+ changes, like giving Luis way more screen time, retooling the shooting gallery into being something you might want to try, etc. Most of the changes are a big negative for me, with too many to list here. I truly still don’t think this needed to happen.

What did you all think of RE4: Remake, now that the dust has settled a fair bit?

I like it. I'm on my fourth playthrough now, going for S+ on Professional, and I think it's done a good job of streamlining some of the lesser bits of the original (the underground, the later castle bits, the island, of course). I'm still sure it didn't NEED to happen, but it's a very good one of these.

For Professional, it has to be a New Game (so no NG+ with your buffed weapons, but you can use bonus weapons, though they need the exclusive upgrades to get infinite ammo), less than 5:30 and 15 saves, max.
