Points, Puzzles, Prizes, and PTSD: Kids' Game Shows

Fearful asymmetry
Necrobumping this to make an observation on Nick Arcade. I'm into the second season now, and while the production values have been bumped up a half-notch and the selection of games in the Video Challenge is more interesting (Gun*Nac is prominently featured, which I think is incredibly cool), the new mini-game added to the Video Zone is complete horseshit. It's a riff on Rampage, with the player climbing skyscrapers to rescue humans abducted by UFOs.

The usual problems with the primitive VR are present... the player can't really see what's happening and has no way to protect themselves from onscreen enemies. However, it's even worse than usual because there's too much clutter onscreen and the targets appear both randomly and out of the player's reach. They'll get maybe one human, run into an armada of sewer monsters and cockroaches, be forced to restart, and get absolutely nothing for their trouble but frustration. And oh yeah, it's the FIRST game offered in a set of three, which means the team makes no progress and gets no prizes.

One contestant put through the ringer by the alien abduction challenge came out of the set visibly angry, answering Phil Moore's inane questions curtly and quietly stewing when the host turned to talk to his partner. He was seething, man. I'm surprised he held in his urge to kill when Phil bobbled his head and pulled on the sides of his face. (Moore has what I would call personal space issues. Some players put up with the playfulness, but it looked like it took every ounce of Kittisack's energy to keep from kicking him in the nuts.)
