Neo: The World Ends With You announced, nothing to do with Keanu Reeves

Square Enix just dropped this trailer, Summer 2021 for Switch and PS4 in Japan. I know nothing of this series but I imagine a few of you will be excited for more TWEWY.

Wait, Square Enix did a countdown page for something that wasn’t just a shitty mobile spinoff?

Shit. God. I dunno. I played TWEWY thirteen years ago. I'm not sure I care anymore. But something about that trailer did get me kinda going... yeah, I like the vibe...

It looks like they've done a good job translating the overall aesthetic to three dimensions.

I wonder how it will turn out as a game.

The first one was a standout for its originality (a lot having to do with the DS) and interesting concepts (also music). I hope this one turns out as good, though it likely won't reinvent any wheels this time around. Definitely keeping my eyes on this.

Good. Let Nomura have fun without Final Fantasy and Disney on his back. Plus I won't haveta' scratch the heck out of a second screen with a stylus in this game.

Yeah so much about what made the first one special was about how it used the DS hardware. There was nothing else like it and probably never will be.

This one seems likely to be one of many 3D action RPGs. Hopefully it will be a good 3D action RPG.

I get why they did it, but it's interesting that they put the English title under the Japanese logo instead of "It's a Wonderful World."

Edit: Looks like they've been doing it at least since the Switch rerelease of the first game. Alas, branding.

Releasing it on PS4 just increases the sales base, since it'll almost certainly be forwards compatible with PS5.

Loved TWEWY, sequel looks cool. I also wonder what the gameplay will be like. I don't really expect touchscreen shenanigans on the level of the original, or indeed at all, but maybe? If it plays like Kingdom Hearts, that would be fine. Probably better, even, for these consoles.

What might be harder to pull off is theme; the central message of the original was "expand your horizons by going outside and meeting people", and that has very different connotations in covid-world than it did at the time. Making something that's consistent with the original but also socially responsible in a way that encouraging players to go out looking for streetpasses isn't would be a challenge. They may forgo the in-person social element of the first game and not address the pandemic at all, which is what the trailer implies. Maybe do something with social media instead. That's also fine, I suppose, but urban fantasy that ignores contemporary urban reality seems like it's missing the point.

Maybe that's too harsh. I'm sure I'll play it anyway, after all. If it's just a fun action RPG with cool art and music, that'll be enough to capture most of the original's appeal and be a good game in its own right.

I mean, Square and Nomura in particular have generally not been great at waiting to announce games they've barely started developing, but I guess if they think it'll be ready for release by the summer that's not the case this time. So yeah, fair enough.

I noticed the main character is wearing a mask (well, "wearing"), but none of the other characters are.

I think that maybe Square either is learning or has already learned their lesson about this, between this announcement and Final Fantasy XVI's trailer shockingly including images of a game in progress, apparently, and not just being a mockup of their hopes and dreams.

That would likely follow a move away from their old "Assets First" mentality of game design.

The first TWEWY was one of my favorite games on the DS so it's great to finally get a sequel after all these years. Once I finish Octopath Traveler I should get started on the Switch port to get a refresher on the story.
