MYST Opportunities! Let's talk about First Person Adventures!

Cyan, the original kings of the genre who brought us Myst, Riven, and Obduction, have finally announced a release date for their next game. It’s called Firmament, it’s coming out on May 18th, and oh man is it pretty. Take a look!

The game is VR compatible for those who have the necessary hardware, but will also work just fine for flat-screen-only plebs like me. It’s also apparently coming to PS5 and PSVR later on.

Firmament's almost here, and was confirmed to be Steam Deck Verified in the latest Kickstarter update. I personally am going to wait until the PS4/5 version comes out, because our PSVR2 needs some love. Still no ETA on that port, which tells me it's still early, and will probably not be optimal, but I want to try it in VR anyway.
Ooh that looks real Myst-y. But I should probably go back and play Obduction first, huh?

I mean, I really liked Obduction, so I'd urge you to play it on those grounds. Still, it doesn't look like Firmament is a sequel to Obduction, so I don't think you'd miss anything if you played Firmament first.

The Riven Remake's got a Demo up on Steam, plays through the beginning area. It's good, areas and puzzles tweaked for VR as well as just more modern sensibilities. Played it on my desktop with a 1080ti/i7-8700K at Epic settings and 1440p, the fans kicked in but it was very playable. Tried my steam deck, looked ok, but nothing special. Would be fun in VR.

I didn't complete the demo, but it did get me to laugh out loud when I "accidentally" broke the bridge going from the back of the dome out to the next island. They do seem to have changed it up enough that even people who have played the game recently would still have fun seeing the new problems and new solutions.

The character models, well they're about the same quality as the MYST 2021 remake. Atrus in particular looked like his mouth was all teeth. Good thing the game is/was 99% human free.

Re: Firmament, the latest Kickstarter update said that now they've converted the game from Unreal Engine 4 to 5, and they are due to release it on PS4/PS5/PSVR2 in Fall 2024. I'm not holding my breath, let's see how the Riven release goes and how much of their resources goes to supporting that. If it does happen, I'll be excited to try my first real VR game since we got a PSVR2 for the kids last year.

Okay, I actually did get the Riven Remake and finished it, well aside from all the various achievements that I may or may not grind out later.

It looks great. I didn't even up my settings (I'm sure I could have). The character models were fine, I have a much lower standard than most people though so your mileage may vary. I love that they went out of their way to match the old FMVs so that was nice.

They did change some of the puzzles and randomized some of the others. Didn't stop me from getting stuck on the first puzzle, just like I did the original time I played Riven back in the day. I did have to look up puzzles because I am both lazy and unobservant (I swear half of them were I just missed this one lever I needed to flip and finally solve the damn thing). I also didn't remember the D'ni number system and wasn't in the mood to figure it out from scratch, again.

They really didn't change that much, but did add enough. Tay is exploreble, but only kind of, as is 233. Apparently if you use the old solutions you get achievements, so that's something. Honestly my favorite part is when you finally confront Gehn and you get to follow him as he walks around the cage. I'm pretty sure he did that in the original game, but its more fluid here because YOU have to do the moving. He's still such a bastard too. They did change how the spinning things worked, so that was a nice touch, but also a bit annoying, still different and I approve.

Ultimately it's Riven, mostly as it always was, but a bit more modern. I spent just shy of 10 hours with it, and while a lot of it was going back and forth missing a damn lever or two, or three, I still fell like I got my money's worth, if only in nostalgia for something I haven't played in decades at this point.

I rolled credits on Quern, which I see was mentioned a few times upthread. I enjoyed it, even if a couple of the puzzles got pretty crazy--I think I had to brute force one near the end as I could not figure out the some of the hints provided.

Otakujeb clued me to a Humble Bundle for all of Cyan's stuff except for the new Riven. Pay $20 for all the puzzles or fill in gaps.
