I think it's fascinating when musicians make songs to celebrate other songs, or other musicians. On the one hand, there's the time when someone decided to cash in on Beatlemania, not by making similar music, but by making a song about the Beatles:


On the other hand, there's, well, Killing Me Softly with His Song:


My favorite, however, is probably this celebration of the less famous member of Wham!

A fair amount of Steely Dan's music is basically about them obliquely referring to the lives of the old jazz greats, whereas Parker's Band is pretty straightforward about who it's about.
