May 2024 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).

  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
Here are the subscription service lists for this month:

Gamepass
  • May 1 Have A Nice Death
  • May 7 Kona II: Brume (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • May 9 Little Kitty, Big City Console, TBD
  • May 14 Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • May 21 Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 Series X|S, PC, Cloud
  • May 23 Hauntii Console, TBD
PS+
  • Immortals of Aveum (PS5 Digital Download)
  • Minecraft Legends (PS4/PS5 Digital Download)
  • Skul: The Hero Slayer (PS4 Digial Download)
  • The Overwatch 2 Mega Pack Bundle (DLC/Content Download)
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.

Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

I'm excited that Little Kitty Big City is on Gamepass! Been excited for that one for a while. Also I saw that it's made by someone who was on TT 2.0 so that's fun.

I posted about Yolk Heroes A Long Tamago last month, looks like it got bumped to May 20th. Still curious about.

Others that I've heard about but am not sure I'm picking up:
- Endless Ocean Luminous looks very nice but I still don't have a solid grasp of what it actually is.
- Baladins was a fun couch co-op D&D style game with a time loop. I liked the demo but the controls were confusing and both my husband and I accidentally used up all our actions multiple times. I'd like to give it another shot after it's been out for a bit as there may be clearer tutorials on how to do things.
- Paper Trail is a cool puzzle game concept I'm just not in a puzzle game mood lately. Enjoyed the demo very much.

Mainly next month I was planning to get a PS5 and some games only on PS5 (and sometimes PC).

But that said, looking at next month...apparently 2064: Read Only Memories has a sequel coming out? Read Only Memories: NEURODIVER looks pretty cool and I would share a video if the video embed thingy wasn't bugging out on me right now.

I LOVED Hellblade, I didn't realized the sequel was finally hitting next month!

Also, not an individual GAME, but the Vampire Survivors X Contra DLC hits in May! It is perhaps not the Konami property most VS fans would want to see in that game, but I am HERE for it.

To be fair, the other one is pretty well represented

i really don't know what endless ocean is going to be like but i'm there

Endless Ocean looks like it would be fun for a couple of evenings with some friends who were up for chilling. Or fun for little kids.

Kitty game piques my interest, as does a few others like Front Mission 2.

But mostly, I’m still sitting on a backlog and need to catch up first before throwing down for more games

Oh, just learned they announced that Platform 8, the sequel to the, uh "atmospheric horror observation" game The Exit 8 is supposedly coming out early May. It's a hard genre to describe but the first game was interesting and my spouse loved it.

I am going to note Multiversus, as it has had the bizarre arc of kinda-sorta releasing something in 2022 to generally favorable reviews (everyone I know that tried it enjoyed it), had some weird tweaks and patches (if memory serves, they had to significantly nerf Velma and LeBron James, and that is some Dwarf Fortress-level patch notes), it literally won Best Fighting Game at the Game Awards 2022, and then the minute the hype died down... it stopped existing. But now I guess it is coming out "for real" on May 28. Honestly, given the timeline there, I would not be surprised if it becomes a featured part of "what the heck was going on at WB during this epoch" in the history books like Batgirl or Coyote vs. Acme.

Anywho, in the fullness of time, I know I will eventually get a copy of this game, though I doubt it will be on release day. It looks like a passable "smash-like" with likable characters (Finn the Human! Garnet! Taz!), so I know I will give it a whirl soon enough.

Multiversus
Wow, I absolutely thought this game came out back then. I remember playing a demo? beta? for it and my main memory is being strongly pressured or maybe even required to sign up for their social media stuff or something? It played fine but a bit sluggish.

Even a single mechanical improvement to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door would have sufficed to sell it to me again, but they have made at least two: per-area variations on the battle theme, and a more compact and convenient fast travel hub. None of its sequels ever managed to improve on its battle and progression systems.

It is also known that the English script has been revised, with a specific area of controversy being handled better: the character Vivian is explicitly trans, and by extension her sisters explicitly transphobic, as was the case in the Gamecube Japanese script, rather than being bullied for less specific reasons, as in the Gamecube English script.

did i do all of that?

Fascinating. I was already going to grab it, but those are great improvements. Hopefully nothing was substantially broken...

Oh shit, there's World of Goo 2 this month too. Talk about an unexpected sequel. A lightly satirical physics puzzle game based on the theme of building structures sturdy enough to support their own weight with a minimum of components. I really enjoyed the first one 14 years ago.

I mean, as weird DLC stuff, I suppose that's true (or maybe you mean as the obvious inspiration for VS in the first place), but there's a new Contra game out right now and there hasn't been a new 'Vania since, uh... a decade ago. (No, Puzzle Fighter But-Make-It-SOTN doesn't count.)

It's like a spooky "find the differences" puzzle in first person. I liked it. I'm not sure I need more of it, but I liked it.

Multiversus was one of those "victims of their own success" kinda situations. Where (IIRC) this small game, with a tiny dev team, put something out that was a smash hit overnight and had way more people playing it than they probably could have foreseen. And it became an all-hands-on-deck situation for the team to just make sure the game kept running under the kinds of player loads it had. And between that, and the demand for putting out new content (new characters/maps/skins/etc) they just decided to put it back in the oven instead of continuing with an untenable status quo.

I’m really jazzed for Homeworld 3 on May 13th, especially having recently rewatched The Expanse. For my money, no one has ever done space strategy like the Homeworld series, and this one looks incredibly gorgeous. Have a trailer, and please pardon the original, pre-delays release date at the end.

I have my eye on Crow Country. Crow Country is a PS1 style survival horror game. I get pretty big classic RE vibes from the trailer.

I'm waiting to see if the reviews are good to decent before I commit to it.
