May 2023 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
Here are the subscription service lists for this month:

Games with Gold
  • Peaky Blinders: Mastermind April 16-May 15
  • Star Wars Episode 1 Racer May 1-31
  • Hoa May 16-Jun15
Gamepass

May 4 Ravenlok Console, PC
May 11 Fuga: Melodies Of Steel 2 Console, PC, TBD
May 23 Amnesia: The Bunker Console, TBD
May 25 Cassette Beasts Console
May 25 Railway Empire 2 Console, PC
May 29 Chicory a Colorful Tale
May 30 Farworld Pioneers

PS+
  • GRID Legends (PS4 and PS5)
  • Descenders (PS4)
  • Chivalry 2 (PS4 and PS5)
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.

Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Y'all are going to be excited about Zelda, thread is this way for more info.

I played Hoa, the free Xbox live game, on Switch a while ago an honestly had a nice time. Simple and short but pretty and chill.

I am extremely excited for Fuga: Melodies Of Steel 2. The first one was something I tried on a whim and had so much more story and depth than I expected. Incredibly dark though.

Cassette Beasts has been out on PC for a bit and people seem to love it so excited to try that on Gamepass.

Between Zelda and FFXIV Patch 6.4, there's not much reason to get anything else this month.

Golden Idol Mysteries: The Spider of Lanka is an expansion to the excellent mystery game The Case of the Golden Idol, and it is to be released on May 4. That's... soon! Soon enough to finish it completely before Tears of the Kingdom, the most anticipated video game of all time.

In The Case of the Golden Idol, you're shown several scenes from a decades-spanning conspiracy and must deduce, fill-in-the-blanks style, details like "who killed whom?" You aren't a participant in the story, but by logically piecing together the events, you learn how the story goes. It's very cool, and can be finished in a relatively small amount of time. It reminds me a lot of The Return of the Obra Dinn despite having virtually no mechanics in common. Highly recommended. And I was very excited to learn that they're going to sell me more of it.

I might also be persuaded to take Cassette Beasts for a spin. Who knows.

What’s a Zelda? One of those Porkeymans? That’s probably pretty okay.

Cassette Beasts also has a lot of positive word of mouth so that’un too

Is saying "tears" instead of "tears" a funny joke? Please warn me now because I don't want to make a fool of myself in front of the Gamestop guy.

I think it will be better for everyone involved if you simply pronounce the game's title correctly, i.e. as "tears."

I hadn't thought much about the "tears" thing until now, what's the title in Japanese? My question being both if it's a similar play on words and/or if the literal translation is something else entirely.

Joking aside, it's only ambiguous in written English. The title refers to the salty liquid secreted from the lacrimal glands near one's eyes.

Jonesing for some more Shovel Knight? Feeling like a Mega Man-inspired 2D platformer with 8-bit-style pixel art? Then Bat Boy (the thing you hit balls with, not the flying mammal) may be for you! Have a trailer!

The Spider of Lanka is out today, and, just as predicted, I finished it in one sitting. I hope this is one of those cases where the DLC is practice for the sequel, because it's good as hell.

NGL, until I saw that trailer, that was going to be one of those games I just gloss over and skip… now it’s at the top of my wishlist

Sorry to have to ask, but does the Switch version have any additional content, features, etc over the NES original?
Sivak Games said:
The main game is about 90% the same. Some layouts are re-balanced and a few things moved around. There are new bosses as well. Graphically, some areas got new backgrounds, there are also new cutscenes with updated graphics. Content-wise, there are 2 new bonus stages and some new music tracks as well.

I'd never heard of this but the trailer looks fantastic. Definitely going to keep an eye out for it.

Darkest Dungeon 2 comes out on Steam... tomorrow! It says it's the 1.0 version, so I guess they really ran through Early Access on the Epic store pretty fast there. Anyway yeah I'll give it a shot I think. It seems to be just Darkest Dungeon if it were structured like Slay the Spire.

Thank you for alerting me to the existence of Bat Boy. It is embargoed, but I can exclusively and excitedly reveal that "it good".

don't expect Shovel Knight polish, but based on the first two levels, it's good stuff. More demanding than SK from the off, in a way that will frustrate some. But it's good.

Chicory whips ass for sure. Big time. Absolute joy of a game, brilliantly written and designed
Also having a second player while not necessary is really charming and I don't think a lot of people realize it has that option. I know several friends who had their children play as player 2 and had a good time. My spouse and I played together and we would trade off on who was controlling the main character and who was the extra brush. It was fun!
