March 2022 games: What are you anticipating? What's worth checking out?

(She/Her)
I'm taking this over from @dosboot, a huge thank you for running this for so long, I've always enjoyed these threads.

For now I'm going to continue the same intro but might change things up later.

A thread for examining the new games of March! Share your personal picks, interesting curios, and not quite there possibles...

Did you discover some small game that not everyone knows about?
Share that and let us know what it is about!

Already know a thing or two that interests you?
Make a list of your interests and/or possibles!

Don't know what's so great about an upcoming game you keep hearing about?
Ask here!

Don't follow gaming news that closely and just want to passively see what BigGames™ people care about?
This is the place!

~

Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).

  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
  • Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
  • Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.
  • If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it

Looks like mostly I'll just be waiting on impressions and responses to Triangle Strategy.

Rune Factory 5
is there, but from Japanese impressions it's kind of a mess even with constant patching, so I may wait to see if it gets ported to a, um, more powerful platform later on like RF4S and POOT and FOMT did

Definitely getting:
Project Triangle Strategy. I loved Octopath Traveler and there's a demo for this if you want to check it out.

Will wait for reviews:
Aztech Forgotten Gods, I can't remember if this was part of an Indie Direct but I think that's how I heard about it? I didn't even know it had a release date yet but was excited to see it in the upcoming games.

Curious about:
Puzzle Quest 3. Uh, I didn't even know there was a second one but now we're on a third? I played way too many hours of the first one so am wary of buying myself this and spending too much time on it.

edit: Ew apparently Puzzle Quest 3 is a gross free to play microtransaction thing, bah.

I won't reiterate what I've already said in the thread, but The Cruel King and the Great Hero is pretty much a lock for me over all other possibilities. Really excited for it.

I am not too cool to admit that I will be picking up Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, a game kinda telling the origins of Final Fantasy 1 through the lens of Jack Gonnabetrayeverybody and his plucky friends, The Worriers of Light. It theoretically has a job system, and exists in the same universe as at least one Frank Sinatra, so why not?

Triangle Strategy looks neat, but I'll probably get it down the road. Elden Ring is going to take all of my game time for the foreseeable future.

Triangle Strategy and Kirby and the Forgotten Land are the easy picks, but they're not the things I'm most excited for;

Young Souls is a co-op beat-em-up about two teens assigned to go into a Goblin Fortress and BEAT EVERYTHING SENSELESS, it looks rad as h*ck and it's got lots of character progression, which is normally a turn off in the genre for me, but it looks really well implemented here.

Dawn of the Monsters is also a beat-em-up and this one is pretty much Pacific Rim, as you take control of a giant anti-kaiju mecha/superhero and obliterate every Giant Monster in your way on a bid to cancel the apocalypse. I've been holding my breath and stamping my feet for decades waiting for a new King of the Monsters, and HERE WE HAVE IT!

I guess Override and War of the Monsters, and RAD and the Godzilla games were that too. WHATEVER I WANT MORE

Aztech is a zeld-em-up (or possibly a God of War-y brawler, not really sure which) where you're a lady with a giant Techno-fist who lives in Future-Cyber Mesoamerica and have a hankin' to use that giant techno fist to PUNCH EVERY GOD.

I doubt I'll be done with Elden Ring in March.

I plan to pick up Ghostwire Tokyo at some point. I don't know if it will be in March. Ghostwire is a first person action game with horror elements and an open world design. Its from the Shinji Mikami's studio Tango Gameworks.

Kirby and Triangle Strategy are down the road pickups. Aztech is on my radar if I hear good things. Ultimately tho I'm getting Taito's Egret II Mini so that's my gaming expenses for the month.

Kirby looks good but after I finsh Schmelman's Rang I plan to spend some time catching up on my backlog and maybe replaying an old favorite here and there. No new games for me, thanks!

Kirby and Strangers are my top picks, but too many games. I have a heaping plate of Elden Ring here!

Kirby, Triangle Strategy, and Dawn of the Monsters all look cool. Kirby is basically a 100% lock on getting that at some point, and I'm going to play the triangle demo to see what I think, but I'll likely pick it up. FF Strangers is going to be a definite wait and see, might end up poking at it years and years down the line, but mostly I will follow vicariously through others.

That said, I will almost certainly be playing Elden Ring well into April, and Horizon Forbidden West is up after that, so all of these are definitely going to have to wait their turn. Funnily enough, Dawn of the Monsters might be the most likely one I actually play since I can 2p that with my girlfriend. (I think? I assume it's multiplayer/couch co-op, but I don't actually know.)

takes a deep breath

Gran Turismo 7, Triangle Strategy, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pack, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Kirby and The Forgotten Land, and Ghostwire: Tokyo.

Of those, only Gran Turismo 7 and Kirby are on lock for a day-one pickup. Between those, and Elden Ring and Horizon FW, the rest of them can wait because there's only so many hours in the day, not to mention they'll be discounted soon enough (except for Mario Kart 8 DLC because Nintendo.)

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption

Dark Deity looks extremely Fire Emblem-y, moreso than most of the recent Fire Emblem games, and I’ve been hangry for it ever since learning of it

This month is killing me. Kirby and the Forgotten Land looks sick, and I'm sure to pick up Triangle Strategy.

I will try to buy a Playstation 5 at no more than 10% over MSRP, and if I succeed, it's very likely I'll bite on Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, unless trusted impressions repel me.

I've had minor curiosity about the Rune Factory series for some time now. Doubtful I'll have time, but I will be keeping an eye on Rune Factory 5 at least.

Voice of Cards 2 slipped my schedule in February. I'm still moseying through the final chapter of the first one. But once I finish it, I expect I'll grab the sequel. "More of the same" sounds like a good time to me.

I also notice these lists have RPG Time: The Legend of Wright on it. I remember being acutely interested in an E3 trailer of that title, an unknowable amount of time in the past. An RPG based on the premise of a kid doodling and daydreaming about their ultimate RPG, I think it was? I want to know how that turns out.

Already pre-ordered Triangle Strategy. I played the first 3 chapters in the demo and it's quite good so far.

May get Stranger of Paradise based on the reception.

Kirby will probably come down later this year.

Tunic, the long-awaited indie Zeld-'em-up starring an adorable li'l fox, is finally releasing this month! I really liked the demo, so I, for one, am hyped, as the kids say.

This is the first I'm hearing about this, and, dang that looks good. And apparently...

"Tunic has been developed by one person, Andrew Shouldice. Shouldice had been a developer at Silverback Productions for about six years. In 2015, having participated in a few Ludum Dare events, he wondered what he could produce if he could spend full-time on the product rather than just on weekends. He considered the state of his own career at Silverback and decided to quit to pursue this development"

Oh god I apparently have to support this. It's on the Xbox series of consoles, so I can finally justify that Xbone for something other than games featuring toads that battle!

Dang, that in-game-map presented as a 90s-style strategy guide is just unbearably slick.

That looks neat, definitely going on the wishlist. Also I recognized Finji from Chicory which is one of the best games I've played recently. It does look like a game I might find really hard though so I'll wait to hear what people think about difficulty levels (and get through Triangle Strategy).

I'm looking forward to this bc I've always wanted to play one of these and now you can be gay. If there are glaring performance issues, probably won't be a problem for me because I unfortunately cannot stick to playing a video game for very long at this point in my life. 😔

Exception: have a great track record of enjoying and in fact completing Kirby games I play, so I'm looking forward to the new one.

I'm very sad to say the reviews for this are not great.

But a lot of the complaints seem to be related to the camera, so maybe a patch someday could improve things? I think I'd give it a chance if the camera stuff gets fixed. Even though it sounds like the core gameplay isn't the most exciting I think it could be fun once the frustrations are removed.
