Make 'Em Laugh! Top 10 Comedy Sketches Voting Thread

There are many forms of comedy, but a really good sketch is one of the best. It can make you fall out of your seat laughing, and if it can do that on repeat viewings? Magic! For this contest, I'll be pretty open about almost any short-form, scripted comedy. Yeah, you've got your SNLs and Key and Peeles, but I would also consider many host segments from MST3K or even some animated shows like Robot Chicken to qualify.

So PM a list of up to 25 of your top sketches, ranked, between now and August 18th. I will compile them into a top 10 and we can all laugh together.

One other thing: Comedy is extremely subjective, so don't be afraid of your choices, and please don't shame others for their choices. As long as the sketch connects with you and it's not bigoted or actively endorsing some horrible act, it's valid.

So remember, you have until the 18th, and the more lists the better. So if you want the best top 10 possible:

Man on the street style segments from talk shows or other shows built on the concept of fucking with folks not in on the joke are probably not really a “sketch”, eh?

I can't speak for Issun but I feel like pranks and such focused around acting/reacting to non-comedians isn't that. A sketch can be completely improvised but, and this is no shade on, say Conan O'Brien doing old timey baseball, it isn't a "scene", it's a segment.

But it's still genius.

But part of why this isn't a sketch, for example, is it's really comprised of smaller bits, not a complete vignette or small story and while it is a situation, the humour is Conan coming up with a series of zingers and gags bouncing off people.

Now talk shows do have sketches and I definitely have one in mind from a talk show but segments and sketches are different.

Looking around to get 'official' names of sketches I wanted to include, I found a list of sketches that included Documentary Now! episodes as sketches. Do those count for purposes of the list? If unfamiliar, Documentary Now! is a parody documentary show, where each episode is a version of a famous documentary (or combination of documentaries).

Honestly, I'm just going to say: If it feels right, put it on your list. Especially with this being a Top 10 with submissions of 25, it should sort itself out pretty handily.

Ugh this is hard, I could do 25 from Monty Python alone. Then another 25 from SNL. And I'm already over 10 after just a few minutes of thinking about Key and Peele. HALP HOW DO

Murder your darlings - it's the Top 50 10 way.

Maybe choose the ones that you find most memorable. Or the ones that make you laugh instead of just smile. You could also try rejecting meme sketches (which is what I mostly have done with my candidates).

...

Wait. Was that last part rhetorical?

More just being whiny, but ideas appreciated!

I'm mainly having trouble because a lot of these are making my long list for such completely different reasons that it's much harder to rank and eliminate things than I've found with other lists. Is a sketch that plays on subconscious racial/sexual biases inherently better than a really well choreographed slapstick? I don't know but I better figure it out by the 18th!

I'm really looking forward to the final list and what people picked as well as what didn't make it.

My suggestion is start by making a list of your favourite sketch comedy shows, then put the first sketch or couple of sketches that come to mind. Don't wait TOO long. After making a small list, THEN start thinking of the other sketches and see which ones live in your head more and start knocking out ones that maybe don't mean as much to you. Not saying it's easy but it might help for diversity in shows. And if they all HAPPEN to come from one show, it is meant to be.

Is a recurring sketch or character one entry? Like if you vote for Celebrity Jeopardy does that include every Celebrity Jeopardy sketch they've done?

Each sketch should be taken individually, I think. Some Celebrity Jeopardy entries were much better than others, for instance. Just use something to specify which one you're voting for.

Respectfully, that sounds miserable. I loved those sketches, but they all blend together in my head, and I'm not going to spend hours researching who appeared in which ones or which joke appeared in which ones. They are 90% all the same joke (Trebek is comedy straight man, guests are vapid idiots trying to one-up him, Sean Connery is an asshole). I may or may not vote for them, but there's another family of sketches that I'm definitely voting for, and I'm not doing research to generate my list, so I'll be voting for the group. If you feel compelled to throw out that vote, then so be it.

Yeah, I was planning on doing one vote for all of Weekend Update if that's okay. I totally see the argument either way so this one is tough.

I feel like as mentioned before, vote what you believe in. I feel people generally vote and good faith.

Also remember there are some non-sketch shows that occasionally break format...

I'm still debating my list but am getting close.

I ordered a print of the comic below and have it framed in our bedroom so I am very in favour of butt feels.

I'm still working on my list. I've got a solid top 20 trying to decide on the last couple. Butts.
