June 2023 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
Here are the subscription service lists for this month:

Games with Gold
  • Hoa May 16-Jun15
  • Adios June 1-15
  • The Vale: Shadow of the Crown June 16-July 15
Gamepass

June 1 - Car Mechanic Simulator 2021
June 1 - Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengeance Of The Slayer
June 1 - The Big Con
June 6 - Amnesia: The Bunker
June 6 - Hypnospace Outlaw
June 8 - Rune Factory 4
June 8 - Stacking
June 13 - Dordogne

PS+
  • NBA 2K23 June 6th
  • Jurassic World Evolution 2 June 6th
  • Trek to Yomi
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.

Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Diablo 4 early access this Friday and that should keep me busy until Final Fantasy 16 on the 22nd, where it will be all Final Fantasy, all the time.

There's a lot of high profile games coming out in June. Final Fantasy 16, Diablo 4, Street Fighter 6. I'm sure I will still be playing Tears of the Kingdom throughout the month too.

Ghost Trick is coming to various consoles and Steam on June 30th. I think it's been long enough I've forgotten how to solve everything and would enjoy playing through the game again. The graphics updates and such look real nice. And of course I want to support them Missile.

I don't have a PS5 but am definitely curious about FFXVI whenever it comes to something I have (2024 I would guess).

The remastered We Love Katamari is supposed to come out tomorrow, with a new mini-campaign where you play as a young King of All Cosmos and other QOL updates like an Eternal mode for every level. My girlfriend and I are pretty excited!

What what whaaaaat?? I was just wondering the other day if they were ever going to remaster that game, I hadn't heard about this at all! I'll definitely pick this up at some point to play with my son (though probably not any time soon, since there's so much Zelding left to do).

EO Origins comes out today. I don't really have the time or inclination to pay $70 but EO3 is a goaty goat and I'm feeling the itch

I'm pretty likely to go in for We Love Katamari since I missed the original and Ghost Trick because I love it and want to see it on a big screen.

I'm hesitating about FFXVI because character action isn't really my genre and I never got far enough in FFXIV to see the parts of the story that people get fanatical over. I want to hear the skeptics' impressions, y'know?

It should be noted that Natsuko Ishikawa, who was part of XIV's writing staff since its start, and gradually rose to a position of greater influence and effect on the game's writing, so far culminating in being lead writer on the Shadowbringers and Endwalker expansions, which are commonly estimated to be the game's best narrative material... is not in any way involved with Final Fantasy XVI. The lead writer on that game is Kazutoyo Maehiro, who was a main scenario writer for the earlier XIV material--which is usually much milder in the enthusiasm it generates. I think this is important to highlight because so much of XVI's marketing leverages the goodwill XIV has generated and leans toward a "from the makers of Final Fantasy XIV" summary of its appeal... but arguably the person most responsible for the game's recent and current favour among its fanbase has had no input on it at all, and to me seems endemic of the kind of dissonance in tone and content focus the game seems to exhibit in contrast to its pedigree.

So the insinuations of similarity are just vibes-based? I guess that's marketing for you.

I mean I liked the writing in XIV before Shadowbringers as well... Heavensward and Stormblood were both at least Pretty Good.

It's Capcom month for me. Got a physical deluxe Ghost Trick coming from Japan and Street Fighter VI Deluxe on its way next week. A PS5 is likely on the horizon now that I have a decent backlog for the PS4 and PS5 now lol.

Ghost Trick and We Love Katamari are both interests (because I loved the originals) that I'll probably not actually pick up for a while, even though I want to support them. Once I get a job, let's say.

FFXVI, I'll be watching the impressions from others before I pull any triggers, but I have my eye on it.

Oh huh... I platinum’d the original and all, but those sound like some intriguing additions. Will probably have to pick it up at some point, though I could probably wait for a sale.

Ah heck, time to finally get around to buying a PS5 I guess....

TETRIS® THE ABSOLUTE THE GRAND MASTER 2 PLUS is this week's arcade archives release. compared to the first one (which released six months ago), this one has significantly more modes and options, including a starter one that is notably shorter and easier to finish than the original game and one that has a focus on managing garbage blocks like modern versus modes. also, the pieces are based on sprites this time; in TGM they're some kind of polygons with tetromino textures that causes a lot of obvious visual distortion on the board at times. to my knowledge a lot of people still view this as the peak of the series, since TGM3 has more modernized mechanics like hold and longer previews (and was mandated to include a contemporary official TTC ruleset, although you don't have to use it) that not everyone favors. although some people obviously do. anyway, i'm excited

June 13 - Dordogne
Oh, I forgot the title of this until now, but I'm really intrigued by this one and glad it'll be on Gamepass. Beautiful watercolor art but I'm not clear on what you actually do from the trailer and seems like there might be a darker turn to the story? Curious to try it.

Also Protocorgi, which is a goofy side scrolling shooter where you're a corgi mech? There's a demo on Steam if you want to check it out.

Dordogne is my most anticipated indie game I know of coming out this year. Forgot it was June, I'll have to snag that as well.
