OK is coffee a vegetable?

I mean, obviously not, right? But think about this: the only ingredients in coffee are beans and water. And maybe they're some fucked up beans that taxonomically might be a fruit or a berry or something but everyone calls them beans and beans are vegetables and even fruits are technically vegetables. So you've got water and you've got vegetables. This is basically juice. Bean juice. No one's going to tell you that you can't count vegetable juice as a serving of vegetables.

So maybe it is?

It's pretty good either way though!

As you alluded, technically all edible plant matter is considered to be a vegetable from a biology perspective, but from a dietitian perspective vegetables generally refer to subset of edible plant matter that fill a specific dietary need, and coffee isn't part of that.

So it depends on who you talking to and about what.

Coffee "beans" are the seeds of the coffee cherry. They aren't vegetables, they get classified with seeds, nuts and grains.

(Insert joke about a vanilla soy latte being a type of three-bean soup.)

The other thing though is that most fruit or vegetable juices that you might count as a serving of fruit/vegetable have a lot more of the plant in them. Coffee isn't really juiced, pulped, or blendered, it's steeped like tea. Is tea a serving of leafy greens?

This tea is nothing but hot leaf juice!

Coffee is prepared in such a way that the maximum extraction of flavor, the very bean essence, can be transferred to the water. Steeping the same grounds again proves just how much of the coffee is in the original brew. What is left behind is bean gristle. Peeling a potato or husking corn doesn't remove "vegetableness" from them.

Coffee is Zeno's Bean Paradox.

Dinosaurs drank so much coffee (a known vegetable) that when they died their bodies melted into a coffee-like black liquid substance: oil.
