"I don't recall saying 'good luck.'" Nintendo brooms the 3DS and Wii U

Does the Fire Emblem Fates DLC ever go on sale? I probably need to get that.

Also, good grief, y'all got some hours in! I've only got 724 hours total into mine. And 382 on the Wii U. (I've been adding some to both recently, though, with Mario Kart 7/8.)

For 3DS, the top results were unsurprising to me.

Animal Crossing, art-making app, the one Pokémon game on 3DS I've played. As I expected.

For Wii U, though...

Guess I used it more as a YouTube machine for watching Muppets stuff while playing other games than I did as a game console. Though to be fair, the HDMI port dying after barely one year certainly dissuaded me from other Switch purchases.

Anyways, I get why Nintendo would shut down the shops, what with the platforms no longer being in print...but I am still sad that it's happening. A lot of games are gonna get a lot harder to buy and play legit, if they're still available in any (legal) capacity at all. The Switch doesn't have a second screen add-on so ports are unlikely. So much cool stuff like Level 5's Guild titles and the Sanrio Picross game will have to be pirated to be played at all if not bought while they still can be.

Games preservation has made big advances over the years but we can and should do better.

I guess the family I lived with for a bit watched a hell of a lot of Netflix on my WiiU.

This is your PSA that the Wii U Virtual Console version of Super Mario Advance 4 comes with all of the eReader levels, which ends up being as much content as about half of the base game, with elements from SMB1, 2, SMW, and YI sprinkled in. All of this is on top of arguably the greatest platformer of all time, so this is pretty much the pinnacle of the medium here.

And you can't seem to buy it online anymore. I knew I should have jumped on that when it was mentioned on Cheap Ass Gamer's Twitter feed!

I love a happy ending. (Pretty good impressions, too. With a little tweaking, I'm sure that guy's Man Ray voice could be an excellent Dr. Robotnik!)

Anyway. I just confirmed that if you want Wii U games, you'll have to pay for them on the Wii U. It's no longer possible to do it from a computer or tablet. It's also worth pointing out that if you want older Nintendo games for keepsies, you'll have to buy them on Wii U or 3DS, because everything else is tied to subscription services.

Yeah, I think that went away in 2020? Maybe? I feel like it was pre- or early- pandemic but can't remember at all.

did i do all of that?

The news made me want to break out my 3DS again, and I have started a game I hadn't tried yet - Etrian Odyssey Nexus is a ton of fun. I wouldn't recommend it as your first EO if you haven't played the series before (IV is probably the best place to start, though not my favorite one), but if you've played any of the series before, Nexus is a treat. I'm on Expert mode (which the game tells you is the difficulty to choose if you've played the series before, there are two lower difficulties than that and one higher), and I just beat the Lush Woodlands on my lunch break today - what a rush that final sequence was. It took multiple tries, and I barely got through it. I also have no straightforward healing - the Princess (er, Sovereign, I guess) class is back from III! It's my favorite class in the series just because of how weird it makes both exploration and combat. In a good way. Other than that, I currently have a Hero, Shogun, Zodiac, and Ninja. The party fits together pretty well so far, I think, though I haven't unlocked the higher tiered skills yet, so my Ninja is sliiightly useless atm.

I can't put the game down. Highly, highly recommend it and the rest of the series, frankly.

Is there a good list for 3DS games that aren't available in physical form? I didn't buy much for it in the last few years of its lifespan, so I'm not actually sure what I might miss out on with the digital store closing.

Meanwhile I realized that doing nonograms on my phone means I’m like seven games behind on Picross @_@

Those are definitely a priority for hoarding.

Also, for 3DS exclusive stuff - I wouldn't buy the Curtain Call DLC if you ever intend to hack your 3DS. There are a few Japan-exclusive songs (I believe) and one Japan-exclusive character that you can't buy in NA - however the hacked version can install those.

I'm actually considering hacking the old 3DS if I get a New 2DS and transfer the 3DS account stuff over to it.

Is Star Fox 64 3D worth looking into? I’ve never played the original, and the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time was really slick, so maybe this would be a good way to play what lots of people say is the best Star Fox game?

I prefer the original SF64 because I have issues (the grody N64 look and slowdown resonate with me), but yes Star Fox 64 3D is a very solid port and visual facelift of the original game. It's a perfectly acceptable way to enjoy the game.

That’s neat to hear. The only other game I don’t have that I’ve been curious about is Kid Icarus: Uprising. The Retronauts episode from last year made it sound interesting, but I do value the use of my wrists.

Do you like the 3D effect of the 3DS, and wish something gave you that sort of theme park experience while playing?

Then go for this.

If not... heck, go for it anyway, but it's probably the best use of 3D as pure spectacle that I can think of on the console.

The Sega 3D ports are an incredible showcase of the system's 3D, probably more so than any other game. I can't recommend Galaxy Force or Streets of Rage 2 enough.

Uprising is a peek into a beautiful universe where Sakurai isn’t chained to Smash. It follows his usual kitchen sink design where they approach it like it will be the last video game anyone is allowed to make. I really wish it had a remaster that fixed the controls.

SO MUCH THIS.

I think I heard it didn't sell all that well. I think giving it a port with higher-res graphics and more intuitive controls would fix that.

It sold well enough (It sold over a million at least), but when the director's other series is Smash...

Yeah, that's very respectable for a hugely delayed sequel to a semi obscure 8-bit game. VGChartz says over 3 million, but I think they just pull those numbers out of a hat

I did not hear anyone on the episode recommend Affordable Space Adventures for WiiU. One of the best games on the system, one of the best uses of asymmetrical multiplayer, just an all around great experience. Its never been ported, I doubt it ever will.

Yes! I loved ASA. The way it ends really sticks with you, too!
