Good switch games for kids?

We've gone through Mario and botw and Kirby and minecraft, and kiddo is getting way into minecraft dungeons, but I want some other games for us to play. Thoughts?

Let's see...

Swords of Ditto: Procedurally generated Zeld-a-like where is artwork is 2010s era Cartoon Network and the weapons are toys.

The Big Journey: Basically Switch Loco Roco with a fat cat as the hero. Insubstantial but fun enough.

Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan: Side-scrolling action platformer, a bit like La Mulana but far more forgiving. Great game.

Sky Racket: Endearing hybrid of Breakout and shooters where you whack the bullets back at the enemies. Very hard, but I think they added a kid's mode that addresses the difficulty.

Pix the Cat: Either solve puzzles or go for the high score in the main game, which is very much in the vein of Snake and Pac-Man. Neon tinged graphics, slightly silly atmosphere.

Part Time UFO: A crane game with your cute flying saucer performing various tasks for money. Build an ice cream sundae, catch fish, load up a tractor with turnips. A Hal production!

Dragon Quest Builders and its sequel are good picks for kids who like Minecraft. My own kids (also big Mario/Minecraft fans) have also gotten into Animal Crossing, Origami King, Odyssey (even the 4yo does well in assist mode), 3D World (great couch co-op), and Ring Fit Adventure.

Super Monkey Ball Mania and Sonic Colors Ultimate are two to keep your eye on when they come out soon.

I dunno, though, I feel like more info would be good. Age, skill level, that sort of thing.

Like, I want to recommend the Ori games, but I don't know if those would be a good fit.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4 are really good, but if the whole thing with terrible people running the company is a consideration for you, maybe go used?

I have a (currently) seven year old "nephew" that has been randomly around more often since about April of last year (gee, wonder what event started then?). His favorite games on the Switch are...

1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. He makes zero progress and dies all the time. I am not certain he has ever gotten off the plateau without the assistance of his older brother. That said, he ADORES it, and just runs around with Link "discovering" stuff all the time, and then immediately running to a nearby adult to be like "look at this tower I found".

2. Goat Simulator. His dad and I played this game with the intention of figuring out if the wee child "should" be playing this game, and we kind of came to it being "violent", but Loony Tunes violent. If you are okay with that, it is a game that is totally where a kid can be a kid, and just lick whatever walls he wants until things explode. He's not allowed to play the zombie mode, though, because it somehow gets him TOO riled up. Space mode seems to be the preferred sandbox.

3. Flight Sim 2019. This kid is just wild about planes. It is a more technical game, but he seems to "understand" that better than the previous games and their similarly "complicated" controls/situations. Compared to the other two games, this thing is boring as sin, but he seems laser focused on unlocking every other plane, so more power to him.

4. Totally Reliable Delivery Service. Similar to Goat Simulator, but includes at least one plane. That is all it takes.

Oh, Untitled Goose Game, for that matter. Especially now that it's two-player.

My son's Switch favorites have been Kirby Star Allies, Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu, Pokemon Shield, Hyrule Warriors, and Super Smash Bros. (He's also played much of the other Kirby catalogue on my various older systems; the two GBA games were his favorites for a while.) He plays the PC versions of Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, Lego Batman 3 and Lego Worlds (all of which I believe are also on Switch). He and I played both Dragon Quest Builders games "together" on PS4 a few years ago; I suspect he'd be able to play them himself now if he wanted to. He's also played a lot of Crash Drive 2 on PC, and it looks like Crash Drive 3 is available on Switch.

On this subject, if you do get Goat Simulator for a kid go for one of the console versions or standalone mobile expansions. And I'd advise against the PC version, it's aimed towards an older audience (Non-computer versions cut out the blood and hard swearing).

I mean you're asking for Switch stuff, I know, but just thought you should know if you branch out later.

What's Shenmue?
Do they like puzzle games? Snipperclips and Boxboy + Boxgirl are both light and charming games (and co-op to boot, if you want to join in).

Katamari Reroll has been entertaining for my 5yo, and she loooooves Donut County. I think we're on our 10th replay. Over two years. She also (weirdly!) liked Phoenotopia.

I feel like Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is a good, kid-friendly take on Link's Awakening-style Zelda. Some of the trap rooms might get tricky, I just mean from a content perspective.

Luigi's Mansion 3, maybe? Actually I think I remember this coming up before.

Lego City Undercover kicks ass. Tons to do, genuinely hilarious, great sandbox fun with full co-op.

Only if the kid cares about progressing. My 4yo will screw around with the gardener for hours.
Yeah, my niece couldn’t speak/read English at the time, but she got a kick out of this game nonetheless when I showed it to her while we were visiting.

How old's the kid? And are you looking specifically for things that have multiplayer? That'll make it easier to give an appropriate recommendation.

Mario Odyssey, Mario 3D World, and NSMB U all have some form of co-op, but you said you've gone through Mario and that might mean all three of those. NES Online and SNES Online both have a lot of multiplayable classics.

Mario Maker 2 could enable a different sort of "playing together," where one of you makes levels for the other to play.

I was gonna continue the joke and say Monster Hunter Rise BUT!!!!!!!!!!!! Then I thought about Switch games I own and I was like oh snap wait I have a legitimate idea

The Mana games are all on Switch? Like there's the collection and the redo of Seiken Densetsu 3! The story in Secret/SD3 consists of "BAD GUYS...WHOA!! WE GOTTA GET EM" so I think he'll be able to keep up fine, and you can do co-op. Dad/kid fun times!

Also instead of arguing over who gets to use the sword and/or spear, you can just take them and tell him he's grounded if he complains. Dad of the year!

I'm also going to support the Mana games, although I would recommend Secret first as it's simpler. Lots of reading though.

Snipperclips is a fun and charming co-op puzzle game

Clubhouse games is great - classic games from around the world, from boardgames to card games to bowling.

Everyone should play the Goose Game, and Katamari Damacy reroll is available so everyone should play that too

My 6yo son is enjoying Good Job! at present. Mostly he enjoys watching me play it and then directing me to drive forklifts into the abyss.

I wanted to say I picked this up this weekend and the whole family has fallen in love with it, including the kiddo. I thought the physicsy stacking might be a bit fiddly for her tastes, and it can get complex, but luckily the Switch port has couch coop and an adult can help shore things up if it gets too wobbly.

Great little game. Well worth $9.
