Gene Roddenberry Andromeda vs LEXX; Let’s settle this once and for all!

I’ve never watched either, and all I know about the respective series is that one has Kevin Sorbo and the other uses extra horny to distract from its low budget.

I can't support anything w/ Sorbo in it. The man has successfully ruined his back catalog by being an awful awful human being.

I have never heard anything bad about the actors who were in LEXX. But I don't think I've actually heard anything about them...

This is true but I think if you could get past all of the horniness and the general grunginess of the show you would find that it is quite Octo (at least I think it is).

I won't lie; I read a series synopsis for it and it sounded *VASTLY* more Octo than I could have imagined.

I am shocked you didn't watch Lexx, Octo. You're the correct age, demographic, and nation for it. Most of my friends loved it when it was airing.

Lexx is really really bad, but I can't in good conscience recommend anything with K Sorbo in it.

I have an IRL friend who loves Lexx and quotes it to this day. I don’t know anyone who will admit to even seeing a single episode of Andromeda.

This Rif Thread has caused me to do some reflections, and now I've added the first season of LEXX to my Amazon cart.

It's apparently not streaming anywhere, so this is my only recourse

I watched Andromeda fairly regularly back in the day when it was first airing since it sort of filled the gap left behind by no Star Trek on broadcast TV. It was alright? Sorbo was easily the hammiest and yet most boring parts of the show though.

Looking at promotional photos for LEXX makes it seem like the MST3K production company decided to make a farscape/trek parody

I watched Andromeda for a while. I loved Xena and Hercules as a kid, so I was (at the time) excited to see more Sorbo, and in a sci-fi capacity no less. The "Gene Roddenberry's" part wasn't really a draw. (I was already burned on Earth: Final Conflict) I was pretty bummed out when it turned out to be a more boring version of Star Trek where everything was terrible.

I don't remember when in the show it happened, but there was an episode where the crew of the Andromeda go back in time (or at least, affect the past) where they had the opportunity to stop the space monsters from wiping out humanity. But it would have meant allowing the not!Klingons to beat the not!Federation in a war and making humans into a slave-caste for a lil bit. And Sorbo was like, "I... I can't do it! I'm just... too space-racist!!!" and he massacred all of the not!Klingons, dooming humanity in the process. And that was the point where I stopped watching the show, because that was just unconscionable and I didn't want to root for people like that anymore.

Not that you should watch any of these, but it feels wrong that Tripping the Rift wasn't even in the running here.

Tripping the Rift has many crimes but the biggest is "Stephen Root as lead and is unwatchable" is the biggest. How bad is a show that it ruins Root? I had to check and yes, that show is the worst thing he's been involved with and he's been in Krippendorf's Tribe.

You can’t rely on Root to lead your show; he exists to support others and improve the show that way!

Even in Newsradio, he was billed right in the middle!

My copy of LEXX season 1 has arrived from Across the Pond

I feel quite confident that at least one pond exists between my house and the Amazon Warehouse in Texas.

Anyway, this weekend I shall watch the first episode and report my findings.

Okay, first episode watched. And apparently the entire first season is made up of feature-length TV movies, so my usual strategy of watching an episode or two every week on a portable DVD player from the bathtub is simply not feasible. Or it is, but I'd be getting *awful* pruny long before its done.

My findings; This is ridiculous, trashy fun and I am here for it. The pilot was basically a Gloryhammer music video but with more gravitas and less of a budget. They were able to deliver complete goofiness with complete sincerity; referencing the DARK ZONE, and calling the villains main warship the MEGA SHADOW and treating it all as serious as a heart attack. The main villain is killed by having his head copped off and brain removed, like, five times through the course of the pilot (aforesaid villain, His Divine Shadow, is a sentient cloud of darkness, so decapitation isn't that big of a deal), a cowardly self-serving actuary is accidentally given the only keys to the planet-destroying ultimate weapon, Lexx and that's the only reason anyone puts up with him, and because of a botched transformation, a decapitated robot head gets the personality of a sex-doll (And a repeatedly insulted woman is given the body that was supposed to with that sex-doll personality, which... well... could have perhaps had done with a second draft). One minor character is a cannibal who wears AN ENTIRE GUY as a suit, with an empty face dangling behind her like a hood.

Shows reach GREATLY exceeded its grasp, but even if the budget didn't come close to managing to accomplish what they were setting out to do, the sheer effort still shines though.

I am not regretting this choice!
