Front Mission 2089: Borderscape

Oh hey, look at that, an immediate prequel to Front Mission 1's Second Huffman Conflict that appears to be alluding to the plot of that game?
Oh hold on.
It's a mobile game you say?
Of indeterminate genre?
Oh my, that's not great. This could be anything.

I was thinking we were in the midst of a mech piloting mini-renaissance what with this and a new Armored Core allegedly in the works

Seems I was being a bit too optimistic.

Saying it could be anything, also implies it could possibly be good. Which seems unlikely for mobage.

You guys ready to roll for a 0.8666% chance at that one rare Wanzer part you need to be competitive, at $15/roll?

I fully anticipate this will suck, but I will never not be amused at SE still making attempts at keeping the Front Mission franchise alive. I'll keep an eye out on this one, but only really cursory glances with zero expectations, while my real attention will still be on the FM1&2 remakes.

The good news is this and the remakes are likely a visibility push to get the Front Mission franchise back in the public eye for future full-size games, if prior treatment of the Mana and SaGa series can be used as examples. We could easily see Borderscape assets reused in a future traditional Front Mission, too, for instance.

Re: this being a gacha... Certainly it could be. Given regulations around set gacha in Japan, I'd say a pilot gacha is more likely than a part gacha. Also it could be another battle royale like Final Fantasy 7: First SOLDIER. It could theoretically be a MOBA, too, since Square doesn't have one yet.

I've seen trashy mecha gacha games that have both pilots and parts, fwiw. I don't think this will be a gacha unless it's something with a big budget like Genshin Impact, or like, Warframe.

I've yet to see a mobile game that wasn't gacha from Square-Enix, unless it wants to ask mobile users pony up real game levels of prices. Which is possible but I feel like generally a no-go for most users, and also not the levels of return on investment they're usually looking to seek. There will definitely be some gambling aspect to it because that's how mobile games make their money. I'll be happy if I'm wrong, but I really doubt it.

I'll gladly accept more Front Mission, but the last few entries to the franchise were:
- A dull, episodic cellphone game.
- A dull, eurojank, third person shooter.
- A stunningly incompetent Metal Gear Solid clone.

The last one I actually sat down with again to attempt another go at, after all the software updates to it to see if it's playable and the story is worth it, but didn't get very far before having to put the game down due to headaches. But either way I'm not super thrilled about the future of the franchise when the next entry we see is a mobile game. If they want to give us a real Front Mission game for the first time in decades, let's go. But for now I'll just be content that FM1&2 are getting remakes.

Final Fantasy 7: First SOLDIER is a fully functional battle royale, and is even doing some interesting things with the formula: monsters are present, you gain EXP and level up, there's varied Materia-based magic, and melee combat can be a valid strategy. That said, it's trapped on mobile, perhaps the absolute worst place to put a game with such a wide range of inputs.
All its money is through cosmetics. I think there might be loot boxes, but I believe it's the FOMO "four different things are available for purchase each day" type monetization. Not 100% sure because, again, it's miserable to play a game like it on mobile.

I've got FF7:FS installed on my phone. You're right it's a cool game, but it's trapped on phones and there are lootboxes. You can just buy some of the cosmetics straight up, but there's lots of stuff you have to either roll for, or just patiently hope it shows up eventually in a way you can pay for it directly. It's cosmetic so in theory it *shouldn't* be necessary to play and enjoy. I'd love to be able to actually play it on a computer or some console where I can have a go at it with a controller, because the touch controls makes it about as fun as playing fortnite on your phone. Which is like, fine, if you're a kid and bored in the car. I'd rather spend my gaming time elsewhere though. Front Mission aiming at that crowd (which is most mobile games) really feels like a "who is your audience?" kind of deal. The only people who remember Front Mission are old farts like us.

I feel like it's important to point out that the video description says its coming to mobile and other platforms. That's why I'm thinking this game will actually have a meaningful budget. Lootboxes is not the same thing as gacha, because gacha has become its own genre of game and lootboxes are in lots of games that aren't gacha.

I don't really care what you call it, or the measured distinctions between them. They're both gambling mechanics that prey upon people with poor impulse control/addictive personalities, and lock content from a game behind dice rolls that you have to pay for.

I will say that IMO Front Mission is not a very good brand name; it doesn't really evoke "mecha" to any detectable degree

Yeah, the content and context may be different but both are ultimately about coaxing whales and other addicts into paying exorbitant amounts of real world cash for some kinda gems in hopes of rolling some frivolous bullshit that they're just gonna replace with other frivolous bullshit later on.

Then the game shuts down forever.

And I say this as someone who's enjoyed quite a few F2P games! Hell, I'm back to playing Dragon Quest Tact right now. Not gonna spend any money on it, but I like having stuff to play on my phone.

Gameplay from a closed beta test in China. Looks like it is gacha after all... but this video doesn't show that part much. Just combat mostly.

😭 it actually looks really good on the surface. Graphically it’s gorgeous. Gacha mechanics confirmed for the mechs. I would hope it’s not also for the characters because that’ll tell us a lot about the quality of the story up front. I couldn’t tell much about the complexity of the battle system but it seemed really simple. Like, the direction you attack from doesn’t appear to affect much, nor does it seem to matter if your ally stands in the middle of your line of fire. I’m heartened that it’s a turn based strategy game, but I’ve seen how a lot of those work in the mobile space and am not particularly heartened by how those workout. Also China-first closed beta also has me worried. Do you guys think China knows how it’s represented in the lore of the series? LOL
