Freedom Planet 2 - It's Out Now! (on PC)

So Freedom Planet 2 dropped and I was wondering if anyone was going through it right now and was interested in discussing it.

So far I've played a few hours of the game and I honestly love it. Only properly went through 1 earlier this year, and the sequel holds up really well and just feels like an improvement across the board. Love how the stages feel a little shorter now compared to the first game's length.

As of right now, it's only available on Steam, and I ran into some issues where the default keybindings were screwed up, but other than that it's been running great.

Only issue I have with it atm is that the Classic Mode seems to be unlockable after finishing the story mode this time, which I can understand the decision with how the story mode is structured to be more open this time around. However, I also get that some people would prefer to play the game without the story as a classic Genesis style game.

You can purchase it now on:
Itch.io (comes with Steam key and iirc has a larger cut to the devs)
Steam

Console versions should be coming next year, iirc.

I bought it and quickly refunded when I saw that it wasn't quite cooked - redefining the controls seemed to be a hot mess. I will likely go back to it but my initial impressions are way too slight to be of value; the game seems like a huge expansion of the original in every respect, including the story, which I couldn't be less interested in. I will pick it up again, when I have more money, and at full price because the team deserves it.

I'd love some more impressions if you've got 'em.

The first Freedom Planet had issues setting up a controller, too. I was hoping they'd iron things out for the sequel, but alas.

Twenty five dollars is really not a big ask for this, if it's as good as the first one. Kudos to the devs for offering both a Steam copy and a non-DRM copy in the same purchase.

I enjoyed the first one, but I recall having to jump through several hoops just to get the game to RUN on PC. Has that been addressed?

Yeah it now runs on Unity and it’s overall a far better PC version, even runs at high refresh rates. If it wasn’t for the controller bug I’d say it’s in a pretty good launch state. There’s also been two patches so far already.

Also a huge fan of the accessibility options, allowing unlimited lives is a great option for the second half of the game as much like the first there’s some really tough bosses.

I washed out at the part in the first game where you've got to fight a giant jade cicada. Hated that crap. I just do not have the patience for that kind of punishment.

Did they tone down the edge in the sequel? Because holy crap, the first game got dark and dramatic from the get-go, and this time you can't just skip the dumb storyline and play in arcade mode.

You can skip the cutscenes pretty much instantly, though I am disappointed by classic mode being locked anyway

Yeah I think it’s a really jarring decision that it’s an unlockable as it just means that people who aren’t interested in the story are going to skip every cutscene anyway.

Not sure if there's an issue with me double posting but I'd just like to say that the game has been patched to fix its controller issues. Also played a lot more and this game rules. Second half is really strong. Still haven't finished it yet but I love the level design in this game.

I like double posting because there are a lot of threads I read but never post in and it’s fun to see someone excited enough by something to go, “Oh! Oh! One more thing!”

Yeah, I never understood why other forums are so vehemently against double posts. I mean, I get that they can make a thread harder to read, but in general, this doesn't happen here. Don't worry about it, especially if it's relevant, no one minds.

Also if you want to revive an old thread with a new post, by all means go ahead. Nobody's gonna judge you for digging up threads here.

It's always been a weird, made-up thing to be annoyed about. Just a rule for the sake of a rule.

That’s good to hear that double posting is okay! Just wanted to make sure that and bumping was fine and I’m glad it is!
