Football 2023: You Can't Put Ketchup on a Steak. You Just Can't, Guys

Holy shit. This Lions is team is officially the best of both mine and my dad's lifetimes. Wow.

EDIT: I thought I'd go to my grave before seeing something like this. Fucking hell.

Looking forward to this matchup next Sunday :)

Maybe this all ends this weekend, but I've liked seeing the Chiefs be the Chiefs I've loved watching the last half decade or so these last few weeks. Even as they struggled this year (and to be clear, that struggle was in the 'not getting homefield advantage' variety and not in the 'might miss the playoffs' variety), it was very much watching a good team screw up and not a bad team struggle. Which I think is more frustrating. With a bad team, you can just expect them to lose and accept it when they do. With a good team screwing up, you go in each game hoping that they will get things right, because it is just a few small things that need to be ironed out. These last two weeks, it mostly feels like the Chiefs have done so.

One game away from our 4th Super Bowl appearance in 5 years.

I think I just need to embrace the Chiefs becoming the villains. IDK, as long as we are winning.

You come at the king, you best not miss

This is incredible to watch. Even if they collapse in the second half - note my hesitation, I'm a fucking Lions fan, I've seen them snatch defeat from the jaws of victory my entire life - I've had a blast watching this game. The fucking Detroit Lions are entertaining me. Never thought I'd see the day.

Yeah, I had to leave to run an errand sometime during the early portion when the 49ers were down and came back during the 4th and wow does this game look different.

Yep. No one to blame for that loss than the Lions. Particularly not going for two field goals on two different 4th downs. Dan Campbell has a lot to answer for, that game was poorly coached on our end (in the second half, anyway).

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Maybe next year.

Also Mahomes might be better than Brady. He's certainly done quite a lot with less to do it with.

Ugh, this hurts. I mean, if you told me a few months ago that I'd feel crushed and heartbroken seeing the Lions lose the NFC championship by 3, I'd be...surprised. But man, it doesn't make it feel much better in the moment.

Well, let's see how the team copes with any coordinator poaching that occurs in the offseason, then let's build on this! Draft's in Detroit this year...there's the opportunity to address glaring weaknesses (defensive secondary)...no reason for Lions hype and success to fade!

I like seeing teams go for it when they could score a field goal, but when not doing that just once would have been enough to probably completely change the outcome of the game... just depressing

Maybe NFL analysts can be normal about Brock Purdy now.

He was excellent except for when he was crowded at the throw, and then he was chucking and ducking. I think he's good overall, but there is something Jekyll and Hyde about him. I don't think he's quite top tier, but he's good and on a cheap contract that allows the 49ers to build around him.

I think I would be saying this had the Chiefs lost, but that was an excellent game. But the Legend of Patrick Mahomes grows.

I had a discussion with my friend on the ride home from our Super Bowl party. Our lives are just objectively better/more fulfilling when we care less about sports.

Since becoming an adult, I have watched the 49ers lose three Super Bowls where we would have won the game until the very last play. Very stark contrast from the team of my youth.

For what it's worth, the Chiefs MO this year seems to be to get a team's measure in the first half and then claw back a win in the second.

That's not worth much because everyone knows that. Which is why going into halftime I turned to all my friends going, "This is bad. This is REALLY bad that we're only up 7." Niners needed to be up by a whole lot more to clinch this.
