Final Fantasy fights - fighting fantasy in game if not in name

Battles have always been the core gameplay of the series so what are your favorite fights and random encounters? (This includes more than just boss battles.)

The bosses have never had center stage to the extent they did in FF4, though FF5 takes a close second. Baigan is a forgettable character but a very memorable fight. Bahamut was a gimmick so good they brought it back for the sequel. The four fiends and their reprise are packed with character.

Even the smaller encounters in FF4 have a lot going on. The Alert enemies, the Toad Lady, the Trickster, and even the Eggs -- I'm not sure the series had enemies doing their own thing this much ever again.

Past that I'm not gonna spam screenshots but shout outs to the original Delta Attack, the FMV-background-sequence Garden invasion in 8... can I count the bike minigame in 7?

A standout to me is that witch in FF IV, that is surrounded by sux frogs. You know her, all you do is get turned into frogs and back. And when you kill the frogs, she turns into one, and hops away. Not sure if "favourite" is the right word, but I like that silly emcounter a lot.

Also, Hell House, for probably obvious reasons.

Ultimecia is an amazing, her going through all kinds of phases, including a GF. Just awesome.

Gogo in FF V. I just think it's clever.

One of my favorite fights / encounters from Tactics is the rare battle where you stumble upon a lone Knight and a Minotaur locked in battle in the desert.

In general I also like battles where there is a neutral party that you can recruit but you have to be careful about not killing them.

I would not quite call this a favorite but this fight from FF4 had always made my wonder why these three different monsters are together.

This encounter isn't all that interesting as a battle but I do like the symmetry of the enemy formation.

I think kid me would say the PIRATEs because if you're a dumb kid who has no idea what you're doing, that fight is a huge roadblock and the turn economy is not in your favor.

FF11, I'd have to say the Mandragora. They are smol and cute. They have some fun animations. And because they are monks, they swing twice per round and so they are more challenging than you expect, especially for blink tanks or anyone who can be interrupted. They had an AOE sleep, Dream Powder, that would actually hit people not in the claiming party, so if a puller was running by or if two parties set up too close, it could get messy.

I always liked the CPU fight in FFIV, both mechanically and conceptually. Demon Wall might be the most a JRPG boss fight ever stressed me out as a kid.

Gogo in FFV is a fun fight that's sort of cribbing from the DK Cecil fight in FFIV, but I think it works better here.

Hein in FF3 was a first aspirational gesture at what FF boss encounters would become, and it works well right out of the gate (unlike the similarly ambitious Garuda from later in the game).

As for regular encounters, shout out to this FF3 fight for hitting me just as the meme was at its height:

Other than that, there's basically half the weird and wonderful bestiary of FF7, plus a couple of real stand-outs from FFV:
-The Skull Eater, a super squirrel that, unlike the benign Nut Eaters, will quickly start one-shotting your party members.
-The Gaelicat is literally a cat with obviously artificial wings strapped onto it. A+, no notes.

Skull eaters! Oh i was wracking my brain trying to remember those squirrel guys earlier today. I could remember the Gil Turtles and Jackanapes. glad you mentioned them. Gaelicat is a great shoutout too.

I'll throw out the ZOIDBERGs from the LPs on this forum.

Spicy
Brachiosaurs from FF6 (because I spent so much time grinding until every character had an Economizer.) Pink Puffs in FF4. Hedgehog Pie just because they are called Hedgehog Pie.

Did I like fighting tonberries or cactuars? I dunno about that. But they certainly presented a unique battle experience that remained memorable and iconic.
