EGGLIA is good y'all.

EGGLIA: Rebirth launched on Switch today. The basics are that this is a mobile RPG that plays kinda like a board game: Roll the die to move across areas with hexagonal grids, then choose to attack enemies or chop trees or use support spirits' abilities or open chests if they're adjacent to you.

There are definitely ways it shows that this was a F2P gacha at some point in its life before you could just buy the game (the spirit gacha, the timers, your item-gathering companions' stamina meters), but personally I can tolerate this. Especially because Shinichi Kameoka and his indie company Brownies made such an amazing world with all kinds of quirky characters.

And also cutscenes with choreography. Very PSone-esque choreography, but the important thing is that it is there and it is wonderful.

This really feels like some kinda long-lost GameCube or PS2 title and I am here for this.

This game is amazing and I am sad that there's next to no discussion of it on Twitter.
Like, I certainly understand there are things that can be off-putting about the experience, particularly the very mobile gamey timers for growing/catching/building things and how all your resource gathering friends have stamina bars and all.

But this game is just so dang charming and has had a lot of effort put into its localization. Much like Legend of Mana before it, this is a game very much about its cast of eccentric characters and it is a joy to see them interact.

Also this is a game where it's really fun to explore the compendiums available. Everything from characters to monsters to random junk has descriptions and there's a 3D model viewer as well.

I've been on hiatus from it for a while. I still like the game a lot, I've just been playing other stuff.

I remember this! It was made by Brownie Brown, the folks who spun out of Square-Enix and made all the GBA/DS Mana games. I tried the Android version years ago and remember being extremely underwhelmed, but I'm not sure I made any notes about the experience. Sounds like they improved it; I think I'll watch for a sale.
