I am just grateful we were spared the INFLUENCER REBRAND they threatened in 2020, but never followed through on for obvious reasons.

Ah, instead of a bunch of announcements over the course of like four day in June, it's going to dozens of corporate livestreams across two months.

Nintendo Really just gutted the entire idea of E3 with their directs, didn't they?

It's kinda amazing how we all got to see the tides shift in real time like that.

i think the pandemic also hurt it, but ya between nintendo doing the "a demo will be available on the eshop later today" and "treehouse segments giving you the experience of playing an e3 demo on the floor" they ate e3 up

E3 had relevance once upon a time as the event where the big game announcements happened, but with other big events gradually becoming a thing and more and more devs embracing digital announcements it's no longer relevant.

Nintendo doesn't need an E3 week to run a Direct and Sony has gone from using it for 2015's FF7 Remake/The Last Guardian/Shenmue 3 triple whammy to not even bothering to set up one lousy display.

We don't need E3 anymore.

I've got a lot of fond memories, anxiously pouring over every page of EGM's E3 issues, looking at fuzzy tiny photos and imagining these new games in motion and what it must be like to play them. But what we've got now is better. And it's nice to be able to curate the info coming out of these myself instead of wondering why niche-game-I-love only gets a small three sentence blurb when I can go online and watch a whole video in 4K showing me exactly what's up.

Also remember booth babes? Trade shows suck.

E3 has been cancelled for a year once before, and currently they're planning on coming back in 2023. It's hard not to see the writing on the wall, whether it chugs along for a few more years or 2023 and beyond never materialize and it officially dies; I'm not sure there's really a route forward for E3 to keep existing without slapping the name on something that's essentially completely different that shambles along zombie-like for another decade or two, like Napster or Limewire or something. But who knows.

I remember when it was just E1. You could see how they lost sight of their original vision when they started to add more Es.
