Depends on the game, but yeah for sure. Since the pandemic started, some friends and I played Divinity OS 2 and then Neverwinter Nights and it's expansion, and I had the music on in Divinity like maybe 20% of the time and literally never for NWN. Podcasts while grinding is also a common experience, or sometimes I'm just sick of that game's music and put something else on.

Years and years ago, I spent a lot of time playing Tales of Symphonia while listening to Tenacious D, and now stumbling upon either makes me think of the other. They are inextricably intertwined in my memory.

I try not to listen to other things while playing video games.

If I am doing an extended grinding session in an RPG, I will probably put on some tunes; otherwise, I am listening to the game's soundtrack. Also, some games (particularly old computer games) do not have much, if any sound, so I have played music then as well.

Most of the time if I try to listen to something outside of a game while I play I find I can't give either enough attention.

On the other hand there's no way I'd have ever been able to put 100+ hours in things like Civ, Persona 5, Borderlands, and Burnout Paradise if I didn't listen to other stuff while playing.
