Petition to rename the thread "Listen up you mugs, we're gabbin' about Cuphead."

Beat my first boss battle in the expansion. Very much still Cuphead, and enjoying it.

I cannot believe it has been five years since I beat a new boss in Cuphead...

I bought it, and then I remembered how angry the core game made me feel back in 2017. I'm hesitant to spend my weekend game time in that state.

That said, I've been looking forward to this for years and will probably jump in anyway.

Oh wow I had no idea this was coming out. Neat! I'm sure I have no muscle memory of the controls anymore though and will need to start from scratch.

I'm curious how you are liking it? Because I'm reading reviews and people are saying it's generally harder than the base game, and yet again if you play on easy mode you can't get to the final boss. We had to do easy mode on several levels in the first game and never saw the final boss as a result. So I'm worried we're not good enough and won't enjoy this at all, especially after years of not playing it.

I am probably not a good example case, because, while I claim to not be as good as a lot of people at action videogames, I do have a tendency to "conquer" anything remotely Contra-like that crosses my path. I remember when I first beat Cuphead on Xbox One, and the little achievement notification informed me I was in something like "3% of people who played this game won this achievement". I assume more people beat it since then...

That said, since my initial post, I have conquered the "main campaign" of the DLC... though the "percentage complete" on my save file for the DLC still says something like 30%. I assume this means there is a lot to do in that coliseum area, or maybe completing everything as Ms. Chalice counts as something else, or... something. I don't know. There is still more to do, apparently, is my point.

All that said, I feel like this is still on the same challenge level as OG Cuphead, and I didn't find anything as difficult here as the absolute final challenges in the original. To be clear on that one, I am specifically thinking of the last two bosses (one of which included a veritable gauntlet) of the initial Cuphead offering. It is very particular, but I could maybe see the DLC "shoot 'em up" boss as the most difficult of that genre in the game... but I could still see the Junkyard fight of the original being objectively harder, too. YMMV. Beyond that, there are a few neat "switchups" across the new game (spoilers for particulars: the wing walking stage is an interesting way to limit movement options, and then switching perspective during that fight made me beg for a flipgrip; the fake "mission accomplished" in the bug battle definitely got me, and the final DLC boss of having to repel salt shakers definitely confused me for a few deaths), but they are mostly gimmicks that will trick you once, and then you'll adjust. My advice would be to pick up the "homing" gun, and, until you have every pattern down, just shoot with wild abandon and hope their health depletes first. I do feel like there are more monsters in the DLC that are less "shoot straightforward at all times".

I was similarly concerned that my Cuphead skills had atrophied, and thus I would be spending money for DLC I would not touch for some time. But I did enjoy it, and Cuphead (with its DLC) continues to be one of my favorite "artisanal" games of whatever console generation we want to consider this. I am happy everything is on Switch, and I can play this portably when the mood strikes me.

I did this co-op over the weekend, and it's very good. I also think that aside from the hidden/extra bosses, it's not any harder than the main game. (There are, I guess, a total of five hidden bosses? Depending how you count. The four King of Games fights and the devil/angel in the graveyard.) I need to do it solo on my own copy, but yeah, I dig it. It's more Cuphead!

Cuphead has kind of ruined bosses for me, in that its masterful design makes a lot of other bosses feel annoying and tedious. The golden rule of a game like this is that bone-grinding challenges need to be short. It tests you just long enough to prove you can do it before breaking the tension and moving on to the next thing.

The impending release of the DLC inspired me to dive back into Cuphead. I was able to get past my prior roadblock (the Dragon), but now I've got a new roadblock, namely King Dice, but maybe not for the reasons you would expect: because of the nature of the boss the load times on the Switch are pretty unbearable. I also own Cuphead on Steam, so I'm wondering if I should play it on the Steam Deck (where presumably the load times are better), but I would have to rebeat like 15 bosses, so I'm not sure what to do.

I booted it up this past weekend, also worried that my skills had atrophied since 2018.

I went for the nearby boss at the outset of the DLC, and it was disaster as expected. I backed out and did Grandpa Cup's tutorial again, as I should have done in the first place. After diving back in, everything started to click: Parrying, Special Moves, Weapon Switching, Evading.

But it wasn't enough. A few dozen tries in and I think I've just lost my stamina for these kinds of games. I'm hoping to dive back in this weekend and get my groove back.

But I'm glad I bought this! It's encouraging to hear it's mostly "More Cuphead" instead of "Harder Cuphead".

Yeah, we went back to the first island and redid one of the bosses, took us several tries to beat while we remembered everything and I got used to how Ms Chalice works but we did it. Then we tried the boss in the cave to the south, even with the new charms from the shop and one of us as Ms Chalice after a bunch of tries we couldn't get past Phase 2. Switched to Simple and beat it in one try so we'll probably revisit that battle later, but still having a fun time, the bosses are so dang creative!

I actually had to switch from Ms Chalice back to cuphead on the first boss I found before I could beat them. I’m just too reliant on that smoke bomb dash and I couldn’t get used to pressing down to roll. Should be fun for co-op, though.

I'm better than I thought - I fought my way back up to King Dice on the Steam Deck. Then I got through the gauntlet of bosses, only to get a startover and be killed by that dumb fucking bunny. Heartbreaking.

Revisited and beaten! I think the fight with the giant is the easiest one, we beat that on regular fairly quickly. For the battle above the key was buying one of the new weapons.

The flying dog one is fun but dunno if we'll beat that third phase. Same with the ice wizard, fun but we're struggling to even get to the third phase.

We both hated the battle in the Western area and even beating it on simple was tough, I doubt we'll come back to this one.

Very glad I got it and having fun. Haven't spent much time on the chess stuff and going to take a look at the graveyard puzzle next.

I beat most of the dlc bosses and successfully pimped out my broken relic, not too shabby. Just need to beat the last one, he’s a bit tricky. A lot going on in the first phase.

As were added for some of the original game fights with the 1.2 update, that one has an alternate phase that, imo, is much easier. I got it on accident once playing co-op and then just now while replaying single player, looked it up. In the second phase, only shoot the the four dogs until the smoke from their jetpacks turns grey, DO NOT KILL THEM. That will completely change phase three.

Last one being the chef?
Yeah, took me a few tries but he is down.

These are all fantastic fights and the bonus relic is a lot of fun. Only nitpick I have is that I’m not a huge fan of them deciding beating everything on normal only gets you a 50% save file for the dlc but gets you 100+% for the base game. Makes my brain itch.

It might be that I have strategies all worked out for the original bosses, but that giant with the gnomes wrecked my shit for like an hour and a half. I think the only boss that took me longer in O.G. Cuphead was the bee. Great fight, though.

I'm pretty sure we don't have enough skill/control to execute that, but will definitely be giving it a try, thanks!

My best suggestion would be to keep any full, five-card specials until the second phase and use them there, that's unlikely to accidentally kill them and will do a ton of damage.

The '20s bug mob has instantly launched toward the top of my favorite Cuphead bosses. What a fun and ingenious idea.
