Centaurworld… exists? It is a show… with… episodes?

Just finished watching the first season and I’m still not exactly sure what I experienced here.

I believe Cheds entire deal is so that there’d be someone you feel absolutely no sympathy towards when he’s on the receiving end of some slapstick hijinks

There were a couple moments towards the end where Ched seemed to almost soften a bit, like when Horse jumped into the Whaletaur Shaman's mouth, or how frantic he was to find a way to re-open the portal, it does seem like they wanted to make him the sort of character that was the 'tough on the outside but soft on the inside' but he doesn't have nearly enough of those softer moments to counteract how he's kind of the worst the rest of the time.

I watched it all recently, and I.... enjoyed (?) it, I think? Let's go with enjoyed. At the very least I was compelled to watch to the end and I'm interested in seeing where it goes, but I'm not entirely sure who this show is for? It is way too much for young kids, but also too immature to be taken seriously. It's like it wants to be another Adventure Time or Steven Universe, another cartoon for kids but with enough meat to appeal to nerdy adults, but I don't think it quite nails either mark? The two-part finale is the closest it came to that so I guess we'll see what they do going forward?

Also, I kind of hate that Horse goes from sharp anime-styled horse to cartoon horse blob? I much prefered when there was that striking visual distinction between her and the rest of the cast. Maybe the first step of her toon-ification, with the poofy hair and her tail with Mr. Peanutbutter's voice, is as far as it should have gone.

Oh for sure, Realistic Horse Amidst Cartoon Goofballs was one of the things that made me stick with the show in the first place

I just watched the first three episodes and I super love it. Very funny and the songs. Golly! How does a a show like this even get made? Yet... compelling.

I cannot express that this is the exact level of bewilderment I had on watching the show. There’s some really fun bits, but…

This is the biggest problem I had. I’m sure the idea was for Horse to realize that Rider would know her no matter what, but all I could think of was how much Horse was suffering severe dysphoria when shit started to change.

They even use the puberty analogy for this. And not only the terror Horse has with not only her tail but then her final transformation could only make me think about the “two beach balls” that made me hate myself for decades.

They even had her commit suicide over this ffs. I don’t know if it was meant to do that, and I know there was an enormous amount of queer creators working on the show, but it made me so very uncomfortable. And really took me out of the last few episodes
.

On a side note: the unnamed woman and the Nowhere King are clearly meant to either parallel Horse and Rider, or even possibly be them. That is kinda compelling for me.

So the second season of this dropped recently. It seems to wrap everything up, I'm not sure if it was planned to only be two seasons or if they were given the notice mid-production and said 'eff it if we're only going to have two seasons then the last episode will be a movie!' because, uh, the last episode clocks in at well over an hour.

Probably the most surprising twist is that the seemingly obvious parallels between Horse and the Nowhere King were a bit misleading. The Nowhere King did have a relationship with the other human woman in Centaurworld, but not as rider and steed. Turns out the Nowhere King used to be a Centaur (well, Elktaur) and became infatuated with a human princess and after convincing himself that she would never love him as he was he devised a way to split himself into two beings, human and elk. Unfortunately both parts had all the same memories and feelings, so while the human went on to marry the princess, the elk could only watch from afar, and one thing led to another, something something horrifying monster war.

But all of that is revealed in just the last episode. The other seven leading up to it are more or less more of the same from season 1. We do get some more backstory on the herd, and an uncomfortable amount of Comfortable Doug, and plenty of songs. So you probably already know if you want to see more of this on what you thought of season 1, just have time set aside for that last episode and don't start it up expecting the usual 20-30 minute affair. Not that I did that or anything.

I missed this all originally, but I can tell you who this show is for: exactly my kids (9/12). They both love it to pieces and have watched it through several times. IME kids can actually like a lot of pretty dark/heavy stuff. Dressing it up in goofy clothes like Centaurworld or Adventure Time do makes it easier to take. They're big fans of Zim, too. It tends to be parents who don't like that sort of thing more than kids.
