This part of Dravania was called Sharlayan, but, as Y'shtola and Alphinaud said, 15 years ago, this place was abandoned when Garlemald started its advance into Eorzea. Later, in Endwalker, we find out that to the denizens of Eorzea, this place was Sharlayan, with the homeland across the seas to the northwest forcibly getting the moniker "Old Sharlayan." Since then, aside from the hermit Matoya, the only people that have occupied the region are goblins, as we will soon see. In fact, we'll be passing through their lands first.

QIJM7Ik.png

The first major landmark you might be drawn to is the Architekton. I'm not sure of its purpose when this land was settled by Sharlayans, but now, it's the home base for a tribe of goblins calling themselves the Illuminati. Satznswys actually ran afoul of the Illuminati in an optional dungeon I never uploaded the video for, when Brayflox's Longstop was overrun by the Illuminati, seeking her cheese recipe. This will actually be massively important later, so don't forget that cheese is super-important.

lvBZ2hn.png
3asJD4R.png
qcKm1r1.png

To get one of the aether currents, Satznswys actually has to sneak inside the Architekton, and since she's a level beneath the enemies here on Paladin, at least for now, it can be kinda tricky to deal with. Thankfully, a random passer-by gives her a hand.

nArjlpj.png

The nautilus motif is all over Sharlayan architecture, and even their machinery.

F2bHnhj.png

Most of the old Sharlayan bridges have crumbled, but one still seems to be standing, allowing passage across the Thaliak River, named for the goddess of knowledge, the patron deity of Sharlayan.

YBPmA8s.png

Further south, in the middle of the river is a very ominous bubble field. What could it possibly mean?

1MPdoMV.png

Across the river is a watchpost that more peaceful goblins in the region have named Bigwest Shortstop. They keep an eye out here for big monsters and the Illuminati.

BBt6kyE.png

You can also hop a chocobo porter from here back to Anyx Trine or Tailfeather.

ovPkeqK.png
lSFNdiQ.png

Catching up with the others, Y'shtola is confident they'll find a way to fully cross the river. We're basically on a tall island in the middle of a delta in the Thaliak River before it goes over a cliff into the valleys to the north.

Jk59HCF.png

By the time you approach the tower, you should have found 5 aether currents. The other five in the open world are on the other side of the map, which won't have the delay in visiting sections that we got in the Sea of Clouds, thankfully.

L2IpHO0.png
D6PCVSp.png

IwODUfx.png

Y'shtola kindly gives the player an Eorzean-to-English alphabet translation for Sharlayan's motto. During the Sixth Astral Era, Sharlayan explorers came to Eorzea to seek knowledge. Arriving here, they eventually came to settle these uninhabited lands, not even by dragons, as a second home for the scholars of Old Sharlayan.

The lead goblin introduces himself as Slowfix, and offers to show the three around.

MkA4XlY.png

When Heavensward first launched, Idyllshire did not look as it does now, but as the patches came out, the city was changed and expanded slowly as time went on. Cecilandblues on YouTube, thankfully, has preserved the scenery as it grew throughout the patches. As it went on, Rowena's House of Splendors opened a chapter here, and it will come to serve as a hub for adventurers exploring the region and plumbing the troves of knowledge that Sharlayan left behind.

upElJo9.png

First stop is the aetheryte. Regretfully, this is the only aetheryte access you have to the Dravanian Hinterlands, which makes it difficult to get around even after you find all the aether currents.

upElJo9.png

Sorry to break up the flow of the story, but there is one other thing that I neglected to take care of before leaving the Sea of Clouds, as the quest that gates it concludes elsewhere.

Namely, the tribal quests for the Vanu Vanu! See you in working through that quest in another update!

Y'shtola suggests that the codeword that was used at the time of the exodus to deactivate the golems was "Noughts and Crosses". Provided that there wasn't some kind of supercession date involved with that code, then it should still work.

That's a fancy as hell sword, and it's also the best gear you can get with Poetics in the Heavensward expansion! There's better, but that requires some stuff we won't have access to until later. Satznswys picks up one of these bad boys for when she hits level 60. Heavensward gear caps out at Item Level 270, and will represent a massive increase in damage and survivability. It's gonna require a pretty big investment in Poetics, however. Satznswys is ready for 60 with some gear that's IL 255, which is helpful, and will make sure she won't be stuck with Ironworks at level 60.

Apparently, it was a research facility dedicated to find ways of mastering mighty beings, like primals and dragons. And apparently, darkly successful. This goes unstated, but if the facilities of the Binding Coils were any indication, it's likely that the research originated there.

Satznswys seems to find what she's looking for in here, though.

2VrdBQh.png

You might've noticed in the video that she gained enough XP to get to level 60, which is the level cap for Heavensward! And right about where we need it to be as well! You might be getting the vibe that we're approaching the endgame as well, with regard to the story.

JEF0O7i.png

So that Shire Greatsword we picked up is going straight on, and she's gaining about 10k in HP over where she was previously, with the IL 255 gear I had a friend make. Our goal is going to be to get whatever 60 jobs we can into that Shire gear, but as she is now, she'd be more than ready to go in to the next expansion! We're going from gear at the beginning of the expansion, to gear that comes out at the end of the expansion, just like the jump in power between the ARR Artifact gear, to Ironworks.

And, honestly, it doesn't look too bad as-is!

AalBK2H.png

Once you hit level 60, back in Idyllshire, this fellow has a pretty neat thing that won't take long to pick up, and can translate in to some decent rewards if you're willing to put in the time on a weekly basis. He recognizes her name as an adventurer of renown, and very nervously asks her help with a job that he's in over his head on.

Seems little Khloe's heard of her as well! Satznswys has built up quite a reputation across Eorzea, after all. Khloe loves stories, both hearing them, and telling them. One of her little friends, likely an orphan from the way a young child might explain it, likes to hear stories to cheer her up. But, as of late, her stories seem to have gotten stale.

pj3wrOG.png
ZpSQgWD.png

...I think I just saw Rowena in the background, nodding approvingly at this conversation.

OOVgPfL.png

Cute name, kid. She says that when Satznswys has gone on adventures, to write them down in a little journal she hands over, and that'll help her come up with new ideas for stories.

K8PZrgo.png
5YzkpG4.png

The journal is in your key items, and when used, will open up a cute little UI interface for the minigame. The way it works is you have 16 randomly selected objectives, pulled from a pool of dungeons of a particular level, like 1 to 49, 50, 51 to 59, and so forth. There will usually be some alliance raids, some normal raids (we'll get in to those in a later update!), Extreme primal fights, and usually one PVP duty. You only need to do nine in a week, so if you don't like a particular duty, you're not beholden to it.

dPWDWs5.png

Every time you complete most duties with a player who hasn't done them before, you'll earn a Second Chance point, able to stock up to nine of those. You can spend one point to reset a previously completed duty to incomplete in the journal. One incomplete duty will be selected at random to swap to complete. The second option I'll go over shortly.

Dng248Z.png

The grid of 16 sticker spots on the right page will be filled in randomly when you log a duty as complete on the left page. Your goal is to complete a line of four stickers, and you can get up to 3 lines. If you don't, don't worry, there's a consolation prize for completing nine duties, which you earn regardless of how many lines you get. You can spend two Second Chance points to shuffle the positions of the stickers on the right page, provided you have seven or fewer stickers placed. Once you place the 8th, the stickers are locked in place for that week. You can get a fresh book every week from Khloe, and it will last until the Tuesday after next. It's August 23 as of this writing, a Monday, so the Tuesday after next would be the 31st.

kaajFgR.png

As for the rewards, Khloe offers gil prizes, Tomestones of Poetics, MGP cards, and certificates of commemoration of three tiers, depending on how many lines you get. The certificates can be exchanged for materia, glamour items, minions, and special Ornate gear that can be pentamelded without the chance of failure. For the time being, though, I'm really eyeing those 500 Poetics, though, since Satznswys will be changing jobs soon, and I'm gonna need gear for it.

fVSI7lF.png
8wKKMHk.png

I'm an ultra brain genius and got so excited for gear that I teleported back to Idyllshire. The last aether current I'm missing here is for completing the MSQ quest that sends you to Gubal Library, so I need a friend to help me fly back out to Matoya's cave.

The gear you get for completing the quest is IL 210, for left side, and no weapon. Originally, the coffer was for armor that was around IL 200, but there were several tiers of gear below that, available from the level 60 dungeons and Diadem, a depreciated version of current content that we'll get into later. One of the long-time veterans will have to explain this better than I possibly could, because I came into the game at the tail end of Heavensward, a couple of months prior to Stormblood's release. Anyway, suffice to say, the armor is kind of the baseline to start with if you're absolutely drained of poetics, and have no kind friends to craft you the Stormblood catch-up gear.

But anyway, next time, it's onward to Azys Lla, and, perhaps, to chart a new course for Ishgard's destiny.

------------

I've decided to make an executive decision, and I'm closing the poll for Satznswys's next job going in to the 3.x content for Heavensward, and you guys spoke loud and clear that you wanna see Summoner, so that's what we're gonna do. However, as you might've noticed, this LP has been on a bit of a hiatus for a while, and I apologize for that! The game has changed significantly, and a lot of this was written before the release of Endwalker, and several of the jobs Satznswys has played up to this point have changed in significant ways, since we're up to patch 6.15 as of this writing. When Endwalker released, Summoner underwent a major overhaul with its core kit, and how the job functions, so it'll be interesting to see how this job actually builds, starting at level 1. I've seen bits and pieces of this experience already on an alt on another data center, but we'll get into that next time.

Haurchefant was and still is such a shock. The way he didn't resonate strongly for your first time around is how Ysayle still feels to me and hoping a second playthrough helps that.

Fortemps' illegitimate son floored me when it happened. I'm still amazed how perfectly the performance and reaction of the Warrior of Light matched my own, down to the identical facial expressions. I think it was Zef that strongly noted how incredibly expressive even just the eyes are in XIV but he's spot-on.

Its sad too, because by the time I was speaking and working with Haurchefant at the end of ARR I didn't really care much from burnout grinding the MSQ. I wanted the story to hit its climax and move onto Heavensward, personal opinion that the pacing in ARR hurts a lot of the time. Bright side was Haurchefant's presence in HW throughout I clung to; starting with the amazing kindness ending ARR by him.

sighs deeply My character platonically loved that man to the nines and I think misses him the most of those departed. Don't feel bad tearing up when he died, she did too and her player did for absolutely sure with ugly crying <3

Any way, heart-wrenching aside! I'm glad you're writing these again McDohl - your journalling and scrap booking skills are excellent.

I've decided to make an executive decision, and I'm closing the poll for Satznswys's next job going in to the 3.x content for Heavensward, and you guys spoke loud and clear that you wanna see Summoner, so that's what we're gonna do.
I felt the need to headcanon in a reason why Satznswys would make such a drastic job change and so I wrote a thing.

Satznswys and Alphinaud stepped out of Y'shtola's room, and back into the bustling tavern area of the Carline Canopy. The clamor of the taproom was like a dash of cold water on the deep emotional moment they'd just shared.

"Well," Alphinaud said with a sigh, pulling up a chair and sitting at a free table. "I feel we ought to have something to drink. As a celebration." Satznswys nodded. Y'shtola was safe, yet changed for the experience, and Thancred was yet unaccounted for. The victory was altogether bittersweet. She spotted the swish of Y'mhitra's tail leaving the Canopy.

"You go ahead," Satznswys said. "I just need to ask Y'mhitra something."

"Are you sure? I could come with you." Alphinaud pushed away from the table.

"I'll be fine," Satznswys said with a tight smile. "Here, my treat." She tossed a purse of gil on the table and hustled after Y'mhitra.

"But I don't need any of your--" Alphinaud protested futilely.

"Y'mhitra!" The night was warm on Satznswys's face as she pursued the Miqo'te. Y'mhitra's ears twitched and she turned as the taller woman bounded after her up the hill.

"Oh, hello, Satznswys," Y'mhitra said. "Is everything all right?"

"Just... wanted to talk," Satznswys said, catching her breath after that sprint. "You're a scholar, yeah? You know all about summoning and suchlike."

Y'mhitra nodded. "Inasmuch as any of the Sons of Saint Coinach. I've studied the philosophies of Allag, though I'm not a practicioner. Why do you ask?"

"Well, the, uh, way you brought back Y'shtola," Satznswys struggled to put her thoughts coherently. "You think it could be done to bring back someone else?"

Y'mhitra regarded Satznswys with her curious feline gaze and raised an eyebrow. Her unspoken question hung in the air.

"I-- we lost someone," Satznswys murmured, glancing away to focus on the Aetheryte over yonder. "Someone important." The memory of that terrible moment on the pinnacle of the Vault surfaced. The glow of the Aetheryte plaza blurred and she rubbed her eyes. Y'mhitra touched her hand, prompting Satznswys to look back at her. Concern and sorrow filled the Miqo'te's sea-green eyes.

"I'm sorry," Y'mhitra said softly. "I wish I could help you."

"But Y'shtola--"

"This was a unique circumstance," Y'mhitra shook her head. "Many threads bound my sister to this star. It took much to weave those threads into a cord strong enough to pull her free of the lifestream. Even so, I fear she has been forever changed for the journey." She glanced at the Canopy, then turned back to Satznswys. "You grieve, and your heart aches. This, I understand. Even the greatest mages of the Allagan empire could not cheat death. Don't let your pain consume you as it did so many others. Trust your pain, and let it grow into understanding."

"Thanks," Satznswys smiled sadly.

"I only wish I could do more. Though," Y'mhitra said, "if you have need of my knowledge, seek me out at Apkallu Falls. Take care, Satznswys. And please, do tell Shtola to visit more often?"

"I will." With that, Satznswys was alone. She stood there, at the top of the hill. The hum of the Aetheryte was punctuated by the drifts of conversation and laughter from the Canopy, and the chirp of spring peepers from the river. After a moment, she strode back down to the tavern.

"You're back!" Alphinaud remarked as Satznswys sat. He pushed a tankard her way. "You're just in time for your drink. I say, are you all right?"

"No," Satznswys said, after a moment. She thought about what Y'mhitra had said. "But I will be."
