Bullets Per Minute is a rhythm game FPS roguelike, and it rules

BPM: Bullets Per Minute has been on my radar for a long time and came out last September, and I just arbitrarily picked it up yesterday and GOOD LORD. It's so friggin' cool. It's a roguelike FPS; you walk around and shoot monsters and bosses, get gear and abilities, buy items...so on and so on. BUT! It's a rhythm game! I've never played Crypt of the Necrodancer, but it's got a similar concept from what I understand. You can only shoot and reload on the beat or off-beat. You can dash, but it takes a full beat to recharge (so either on-beat to on-beat or off-beat to off-beat). Each gun has a different rhythm for firing AND reloading; the pistol lets you fire on and off beat, but the bolt action rifle for instance you have to fire then cock the bolt, so if you start on the beat you're firing on the beat and cocking the bolt on the off beats. Most weapons have multi-stage reloads, and some take 3 beats, some take 2, etc. The ray gun I got in my last run had infinite ammo so you didn't NEED to reload at all, but it would overheat after 7 half-beat shots, so you had to pay attention to how many beats you were firing it on. Everything you do is incorporated into the music; dashing, shooting, reloading...it's wild, super duper fun. It's 20 bucks! That's the price of 4 of your fancy Starbucks coffees!

Also the soundtrack is good as Heck! And the game LOOKS cool too! It's got a Norse mythology vibe with angels and vikings and stuff named Mjolnir and whatever, but the game has a super saturated cell shaded look and each stage has a different color palette...it's a really cool way to make the game look unique on a budget. The music leans hard into the viking aesthetic and goes for a heavy metal/electronic sound that fits the entire concept really well.

So basically, if you like a game like say Quake, and you like roguelikes, and you like music games, then you HAVE to play this. There's options to adjust how strict the timing is, and you can even turn on an "Auto Rhythm" mode, and there's multiple difficulties (though there are characters locked behind higher ones). It's 20 bucks! The characters all play differently and have unlockable powers and stuff, and the item combos can make or break a run. It's fast paced and just friggin' wild. Please look forward to it

Edit: this showed up in my feed after that trailer, and is actually a pretty good example of what the game is like

Yeah, I totally missed this until you started Tweeting about it, and now I'm quite interested.

This looks incredibly cool!

I've also never been so unquestionably sure that I would be BAD at a videogame.

Like I watched that video and probably a third of the time didn't even understand the beat the shot/reload was matched to.

But it is SO incredibly cool.

I love music games and roguelikes, but I'm bad at FPSs. Also I guess there's no Mac version, so I can't try it out anyway, but I want to.

The only downside to the game I can see just from the trailers is that it's aggressively red. Like, blindingly so.

Not all of them! One of the stages is yellow and another is green. In general each area has a color and they stick to that mostly.
