Breakfast

Today I made rolled oats, blueberries, chia seeds and dried basil. I heated everything but the chia seeds in the microwave. I put the chia seeds in some water to get them to start puffing up before I mixed them in with the rest. On other days I'll try other herbs and spices to complement the flavor of blueberries.

What web site do you guys use to host images so you can display them here?

Blueberries and basil is a combination that never would have ever occurred to me. Interesting.

I have a number of things I cycle through, let's see...

Most common breakfast: Two slices of toast made from Dave's Killer Good Seed Bread, unsalted butter because salted butter on toast is gross and I don't understand why people do this.
Cereal: I fucking love cereal, so much that it's dangerous to keep in the house because I can't control myself. I have it rarely now as a treat, currently trying this Magic Spoon stuff which is good but expensive. But seriously if I could eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch or granola or Honey Nut Cheerios or whatever every morning and not die I absolutely would,
When I'm working from home/have time to clean up: Scrambled eggs with whatever leftover cheese/herbs/veggies we have around.
Weekend mornings: Waffles made from Kodiak mix or Bob's Red Mill mix. I love waffles but it's not worth making a batch of waffles for one so we only do it when we're both eating breakfast around the same time
Trips/camping: Picky bars. My favourite bars used to be the Clif Builders bars but they changed the recipe a few years ago. And Picky is local which is neat.
Summer/hot mornings: Banana, cashew milk and protein powder or peanut butter in a blender. I can never freaking remember to put chia seeds in there but I mean to.
Winter/cold mornings: Oatmeal, if I've found them on sale or am being fancy Straw Propeller and Umpqua Oats are good but it's such a waste of packaging I prefer to just make my own. On weekends we'll do steel cut oats programmed in the rice cooker the night before but on weekdays it doesn't work as well since I get up 3+ hours earlier than my spouse.

And always with coffee. Dark roast for sure, Nespresso when I have it otherwise drip, support your TT roaster here! Decaf if I can find a good dark roast, but I've never found a decaf dark roast I like as much as caffeinated ones.

I eat raisin bran (with either skim local milk if I have it, or 1%/2% branded milk) like 90% of the time. Not a morning person so most breakfast is quick "get food in me", plus my body appreciates the fiber dose.

On weekends though we've often been making a thing with local biscuits, egg bites, cheese, sour cream, and mustard-barbecue sauce that's messy but delicious.

Been trying that Magic Spoon stuff too. Great stuff and doesn't leave you hungry in an hour.

Yeah, I'm really pleased with it. I will note the different flavors vary in how full they make me feel. Cinnamon is my favourite.

Also I wish Pumpkin Chai was year-round!

Heh, I hadn't seen those, interesting. Though I was never super into most of the sugary fake cereal stuff even as a kid (well, I did enjoy Cocoa Krispies turning the milk chocolate). These days I usually just eat whatever high-fiber crunchy raisin bran I find for breakfast.

If I look for cereal I end up spending time comparing protein vs sugar content and finding something with a decent ratio - this is very rare and so it'd usually be one of like 2-3 cereal or granola options. But damn, I really do love cereal. I grew up on that garbage (this probably explains a lot in hindsight) and still love it, though I don't buy any for myself anymore, but if honey nut cheerios or the rare box of cinnamon toast crunch find their way into the house, well, I treat myself now and then.

I did try Magic Spoon a while back and a couple of the flavors were OK, I think it was just too expensive or not quite tasty enough to justify. Might be worth another shot though, maybe they've improved?

Microwaving rolled oats for oatmeal is a pain in the ass since only two bowls in the house can be used to do so without its boiling over, but I should get back on that more often. I did get steel-cut oats and figure out that they could be made easily and successfully in the instant pot, and they refrigerate well to boot. I also make smoothies now and then, though less so in the winter.

But honestly, I usually just eat food for breakfast. Like, if I have leftovers or a prepackaged meal or any other given regular-ol'-food, I'll eat that too. I just now finished leftover meatloaf for my breakfast!

My go-to is Crispix, though it's been out of stock in my local grocery store for the last few months (due to the Kellogg strike?) so I've been getting a variety of cereals instead. I generally avoid sugary stuff, not for health reasons but just because I don't want a ton of sugar first thing in the morning. Special K is pretty decent. Right now I have a lot of generic Raisin Bran.

I will say there's a lot more variety than expected between the flavors, I really like that the cinnamon isn't that sweet but some of the others were crazy. Also they flavors vary a lot in terms of nutritional content/how full I feel.

And yeah, it ain't cheap, we wait for sales on it.
