Be my victim: The Candyman Thread

New Candyman is fairly incredible.

I'm still digesting, but will post a thing about it soon. While you wait please envision Tony Todd hypnotizing you in a parkade

OK

So the original Candyman is about a white woman (Helen Lyle) investigating an urban legend talked about in the Cabrini Green housing projects in Chicago. She discovers that it is in fact true, and she becomes haunted, and framed by the vengeful ghost of Candyman/Daniel Robitaille (name taken from the dtv sequels in 90s. Nothing else from these is pertinent to this discussion), the artist son of a freedman who was renowned for his portraits. He fell in love with the daughter of a white landowner, and was tortured and murdered at the spot of the future Cabrini Green. He haunts the area, and his crimes give him strength. The urban legend is his essence. Anne Marie, a resident of Cabrini Green, has her son abducted by Candyman, though Helen is the suspect. Helen escapes capture due to Candyman's interference and rescues the infant, and thusly vanquished Candyman. She also learns she is the reincarnation of the woman Candyman fell in love with in life. Helen dies in this encounter.. (or does she???... sort of).

In Candyman 2021:

Anthony is a black artist who, with his art dealer partner Brianna, lives in the gentrified Cabrini Green of the present. The tenement towers of the original were demolished in 2011 (in movie and reality). He has a fractured relationship with is mother, and his art career is stalling after being the hot new thing. The art community wants him to trade on his race, and images of racialized suffering. By happenstance he hears about the story of Helen Lyle in which the Candyman part is small. He decides to investigate this himself by going to the remaining parts of the old Cabrini Green, old abandoned row houses.
Here he is stung by a honey bee, and meets Burke. Burke runs a local laundromat/dry cleaning and in the 70s as a child he lived in Cabrini Green. He tells the story of Candyman to Anthony: in 1977 a resident, Sherman Fields, was known as the candyman. He gave candy to local children. He had a prosthetic hook on his right hand. He was accused of giving razor bladed candy to a white girl, so the cops were looking for him. He hid in the walls of the decaying Cabrini Green apartments until he approached a young Burke. Burke was startled and screamed, alerting the cops, who beat Sherman to death. The razor blade candies were still found, proving Sherman wasn't the suspect. However, when his name is said 5 times in a mirror, he appears and murders his summoner....

More on this later. After my plot synopsis i'll do a bit of commentary
