April 2024 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
Here are the subscription service lists for this month:

Gamepass
  • April 1 Ark: Survival Ascended Console, PC, Cloud
  • April 2 F1 23 Cloud
  • April 2 Superhot: Mind Control Delete Console, PC, Cloud
  • April 4 Turbo Golf Racing 1.0 Console, PC, Cloud
  • April 9 Botany Manor Console, TBD
  • April 16 Harold Halibut Console, TBD
  • April 24 Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Console, TBD
  • April 25 Another Crab's Treasure Console, TBD
  • April 26 Manor Lords PC
PS+
  • Immortals of Aveum | PS5
  • Minecraft Legends | PS4, PS5
  • Skul: The Hero Slayer | PS4
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.

Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Tales of Kenzera: Zau comes out April 23rd. I heard about this game from an interview with actor Abubakar Salim about how he wanted to make this game and how it helped him process grief which caught my interest. The demo was fun too so looking forward to this one!

Another Crab's Treasure releases for everything April 25th. It looks cute, but then I saw it's a "soulslike" so I'm a bit less sure about it as I get easily frustrated. Definitely going to give it a whirl as I still have Gamepass right now though.

Yolk Heroes: A Long Tamago caught my interest entirely because of the pun name, I admit it. But it looks fun! Doubt I'll pick it up right away though.

Eiyuden Chronicles is coming out and that's really all I need to know about this month.

If you don't know about that game somehow, it's basically a new Suikoden game, made by the guy (RIP) who made the original Suikoden games.

It's got to be Sand Land. An open world adaptation of the Akira Toriyama manga about the prince of demons and his pointy eared ol' gnome man helping an old human find a permanent source of water for the humans and stop a greedy king in a desert world full of dinosaurs and soldiers and monsters. And you get to drive Toriyama style tanks and motorcycles and stompy robots around.
I was already heavily leaning towards getting this before Toriyama's passing but now I'mma Day One it. Really liked what I saw in the demo.

Eiyuden Chronicle is gonna be it for me. Very excited (altho it will be a little melancholy after the passing of Murayama).

I want to Crab, Chronicle, and Land. Busy month! AND there's a whole new SaGa in there too. Whew!

Couple of interesting things coming out this month:

Turbo Kid is a Metroidvania slash-em-up, but all your movement appears to be...BMX-based? Doesn't seem like the Angel Summoner is around to mess with your plans this time, either.

Harold Halibut is either an adventure game or a visual novel, I'm not sure which, but it features stop-motion claymation characters and looks fantastic. Check out this trailer:

Holy. Shit.

That looks stunning.

It is on the Gamepass list I had above but I hadn't heard anything about it so didn't look into it. Absolutely checking this out.

Turbo Kid and Eiyuden Chronicles are definites, but I'm also really looking forward to Freedom Planet 2; the original game was among my favorite Sonic the Hedgehog games (as long as you played it on Easy Mode; enemies were *huge* damage sponges otherwise), and the sequel looks to be More Of That.

It also forces you to play in the Story Mode at least once, but hopefully it's at least paced better. Lots... lots of cutscenes for a 2D platformer

Eiyuden Chronicle looks most interesting, but as I've got Unicorn Overlord and a Steam Deck coming in April already, probably won't jump into that one right away.

I honestly do not know much about Stellar Blade other than that it has caused some random uproar about women and/or misogyny in gaming. To be clear, I do not mean to diminish the discussion there, I just have no real grasp of what is happening. That said, the fact that it releases a day apart from SaGa: Emerald Beyond means I likely will not notice it for months.

If I end up getting a new game at all, it'll likely be SaGa Emerald Beyond, but Harold Halibut looks cool too. And I'd never really heard of Sand Land, but it looks ambitious and neat! And I never played a Suikoden, but Eiyuden could be interesting too.

I'm curious about Sand Land because obviously, but the game is part of a multimedia blitz. There will be a tv show made of it too, which I think will be where I'd start with that. And if the story/characters in the show are enthralling enough, then maybe look up the game.

Also yeah. I'll fourth Paul giving Suikoden a go.

No doubt the anime will make an interesting complementary piece and all, but Sand Land already had me at "Toriyama vehicles".

Love this Robo-ass/Red Ribbon-ass mech.

Also Toriyama animals, Toriyama monsters, Toriyama armies and gangs, etc.

It's really a shame that the Suikoden remaster didn't make it out in time for Eiyuden, because there are a lot of people who should play both, and probably a lot who otherwise would!

Sand Land really seems like straight up "What if Dragon Ball, but also Mad Max?"

If you wanna know more about SandLand you can also buy the manga! It's just one volume. /plug

The game looks really neat, I'm going to keep my eye on that.

Paul I think you'd like a Suikoden

I’m honestly surprised to learn you’re unfamiliar

You should really play Suikoden, and Eiyuden.

I know! I'm looking forward to the remasters, and seeing how people enjoy Eiyuden too. I'm on a tight budget and don't have much for new games right now, though (Unicorn Overlord I was able to juuuust barely get with what was already in my Switch account and my gold points) so they may have to wait.
