Since primitive caveman first gazed upon the night sky, all of humanity has shared one single thought; “I want to kick that things ass”.

And, thanks to the magic of video games, that wonderful fantasy can be experienced by anyone! Let’s find all the examples we can!

For clarity;
1. Just moons. Moon sized aliens don’t count *unless* they function as moons themselves.

2. A game where thwarting the moons wicked designs count, even if the moon itself is intact by the end.

3. If the goal is to avenge the moons untimely death, well count that too; as long as that rat bastard wound up getting what it was owed.

Let’s Begin With the Obvious One;

Technically, the Moon is blameless here, if the moon could ever be blameless for anything (it can not), but it has a demon living inside it’s head and that demon wants to smoosh a town so the moon has got to go. Furthermore; possibly the creepiest moon. You can’t tell me it didn’t deserve what it had coming to it.

In Yoshi's island you have to kick the moon's ass so hard it's spine goes rocketing out its neck and kicks a raven's ass

You actually blow up MULTIPLE moons across the Super Robot Wars franchise.

Plus Jupiter itself, a few times.

Astro Boy Omega Factor has a moon that is up to no good.

I want to say Persona 3 has a villain that is also the moon... or... something. That game is 80 hours long and I have not played it for a while.

Final Fantasy 4 you eventually make a moon skedaddle.

Ducktales feels like an edge case. You don't attack the moon itself, only devastate the local population.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has you slice the moon in half.

I’m not sure if it’s the moon, or just a meteor, but the final stage of Sonic Blast Man in the arcade had you beating an enormous space rock to dust with your bare hands

I asume the SMT franchise has its share of moon gods/goddesses to punch/shoot/stab.

Is the moon still a moon once it falls out of orbit? Might just become a fancy meteor at that point, any yahoo can beat one of those up.

Wait a second—maybe I do have something after all. All of the bosses in Mega Man V for the Game Boy have Solar System-themed names, and that game’s version of the Yellow Devil is called Dark Moon.

Does that count?

Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable Night is about the disappearance of the moon and its surreptitious replacement by a fake moon. Under the guise of an eternal night, the protagonists confront the masterminds behind the incident--a household of expatriate moon rabbits, former Lunarian bigshots and the moon princess herself. It's complicated but the fake moon at least in essence gets busted.

Likewise, Touhou Kanjuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom is about the invasion and attempted colonization of earthside Gensokyo by the Lunarians, acting as refugees from their home because they made the mistake of pissing off an angry mom and spirit of vengeance and the goddess of Hell she's allied with, leading to the moon's occupation by the forces of Hell. The protagonists once again confront both of these parties in a prickly and precarious situation, but do make it to the moon and bust some heads from thereabouts along the way.

Does it count if a playable character does it in a cutscene? Asking for purposes of inclusion of Sonic Adventure 2

Sure does! Robotnik is the hero of his own story, and also our own.

In that same vein, the plot of Battletoads/Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team is kicked off by the Dark Queen blowing that damn moon out of the sky

You destroy the moon (and the Earth and the Sun and the entire Milky Way galaxy) in the true ending of Hyper Princess Pitch.

There's a Symphogear smartphone game, I assume at some point it requires you to fight the moon

In the Marathon games, the moon Deimos was converted into the colony ship UESC Marathon, which got attacked and infiltrated repeatedly by both aliens and the player under various circumstances, and ended up at least totally crippled if not destroyed by the end of the series.

Also Sephiroth's Supernova surely destroys multiple moons on its way through the solar system.

I don’t recall in Doom Eternal if you use a BFG 10,000 on Mars to blow up the moon, or if you use one on the moon to blow up Mars.

Either way, you can see that the Earths moon blew up early in the game

Love this thread!

Cocoron, the Famicom game Akira Kitamura (aka Mega Man's Dad) created after leaving Capcom, has a memorable moon fight. It just wants to shine brighter than the sun and stars!

Metal Black, maybe my favorite shmup, has a whole stage based around the moon. Stage 2, titled "Cry for the Moon," sees you flying through space with the amazing Zuntata song "Dual Moon" playing and the moon looming in the background. Soon enough, a SECOND moon forces its way onto the screen, exposing the background moon as the DIRTY FAKE MOON it is. The fake moon splinters and births a metal space dragon.

Cuphead has a fight against a clockwork crescent moon:

And @ASandoval is working on a beautiful new Little Nemo game that I believe will have a fight against the moon:

While I haven’t beaten the game yet, in Nights of Azure 2, you have to keep the moon from stealing your girlfriend.

Presumably you have to do this with the power of violence
