The Series-ously SX-y Xbox Thread with the super not great name that I may need to workshop

Considering Series S is allegedly sold at an even greater loss than the Series X, I doubt Microsoft wants people confused between the two.

Owing to an unexpected windfall, I was all geared up to buy one of the Series’. Only to discover that they’re still all sold out and will be for the next few months.

It’s precisely like the gift of the magi, except completely self inflicted and denying me a toy I wanted to play with.

Could find some One Xs for about the same price as a Series S, but that seems like a foolish investment at this time

My attitude with both of these expensive new consoles that hope I will also buy an expensive new ludicrous res TV is "Wait and see". IMO, PS5 has a slight edge right now with Resident Evil VIllage and a new generation of Final Fantasy* on the way (not to mention my vast PS4 library that should (mostly) work on it via BC), but Microsoft owns a bunch of cRPG companies and I'm interested in seeing what comes from that.

* That said, both of these things just remind me that I still need to get around to buying the recent REmakes and try to actually commit to FFXIV Online on resub instead of playing a few days then immediately bouncing off of it when I go play other games.

My wife, bless her heart, did her best to find me a PS5 for christmas just to see if she could but struck out and bought me an instant pot instead. I think its already gotten more use than a PS5 would at this stage. I can wait a bit.

Just found out my brother-in-law got a Series S for Christmas.

Even though my sights are set squarely on Series X, I'm still a little jealous.

Ive since reversed this stance since learning that there aren’t really any Xbox Series exclusives presently or in the foreseeable future I care about, it’s more of a gussying up of existing games, and them being gussied in ways I don’t feel strongly about.

And since my main incentive is Gamepass anyway, I figured I might as well get the One.

A decision I made when every Xbox One in the city finally disappears.

The universe does not want me having a new Xbox

The One X does sound like it’s going to be viable for XBox gaming for the foreseeable future (as opposed to the base One/One S being “viable”), so the big thing with Series S/X is the SSD speeds and the suspend state features. Hell, in some select cases the One X actually runs games better than the Series S, depending on the nature of the optimizations.

I really would hold out for at least an S.

Same. Especially as last I heard, the One X was discontinued, likely because the Series S is similarly priced (and maybe to curb that confusion some people have).

As for the foreseeable future, that's only about a year or two, right?

Anytime I read any post here and somebody mentions a console model, like

I actually have to stop and think for a second about which console is which because of MS sucky name system.

I hate it.

I started referring the the present generation as just “Series”, just to avoid confusion.

Well, reduce confusion

XBL pricing is getting jacked up to $60/6 mo, with no options to buying a year.

You also can't even play any online F2P games on xbox w/o XBL.

Gamepass Ultimate push innit... that's usually very cheap but I'm not surprised they're doing this. Disappointing but expected. I still rate the value as higher than shitty PS Plus, but online gaming shouldn't be paid in the first place.

I didn’t even realize f2p games were gated behind Gold/Gamepass on XBox until I saw news of this today. That’s wack.

They changed mind so fast on a Friday evening that I’m starting to wonder if this wasn’t the plan in the first place.

I heard they already shipped out cards for the new rate.

Regardless, it will probably remain a mystery. At least we're better off than we started now.

Considering they are in 3rd place right now, and the new hardware gen doesn’t look to be changing that anytime soon, bad PR moves like that were the last thing they wanted. I suspect they just weren’t expecting it to blow up like it did.

Has anyone tried the new FPS Boost on any titles?

I tried to check out New Super Lucky's Tale, but I'm not sure whether it was updated or not.

I'm normally not one to notice frame rate unless it goes well south of 30 or I have a good side-by-side going, but I figured seeing 120fps was just something I'd notice, like with whatever higher number The Hobbit was running at.

Not all TVs can output 120, though? I think you need one of the newest models with the latest HDMI version... or is that only if you want native 4K and 120FPS at the same time?

I remember reading something when the Xbox came out so I went straight to the horse's mouth - you need HDMI 2.1 for 120 FPS at 4K. Not all TVs support 120 FPS at lower resolutions either. But odds are any recent 4K set will support 1080P at 120.

I also see there's something about 10bit color that you must be careful setting up as it might reduce resolution? Dammit, all this setup stuff is why I preferred console gaming. I give it two gens before we start having to handle drivers ourselves.

You need a minimum of HDMI 2.1 to see 120 fps. A lot of TVs made in 2020 will have a least one HDMI 2.1 port, with newer TVs having more than one HDMI 2.1 port. Any TV older than those, though, and you may be out of luck.

If the game originally ran at, say, 30 fps and you have a TV capable of 60 fps, the FPS Boost should get you to 60 for that game. But you won't see 120 without the right TV.

Edit: You also need the appropriate cable to output 120 fps. A regular HDMI cable won't work. (The PS5 comes packed in with that cable; not sure about the Series X but I'd assume so.)

Okay, so let's see here, then...

The Xbox Series X console comes with a 2-metre Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 features. This cable is required to support 4K gaming at 120Hz.

Okay, good, good... let me see what my 4KTV we just got back in November is packing...

Hm, the manual has a copyright date of 2019... that's worrisome...

It doesn't say what kind of HDMI I have. Not in those terms, anyway:

RGB / 60Hz (640x480, 800x600, 1 024x768), YUV / 60 Hz (480i, 480p, 720p, 1 080i, 1 080p)
3 840x2 160/60Hz, 3 840x2 160/24Hz, 3 840x2 160/25Hz, 3 840x2 160/30Hz

Looking at other parts, I guess I've just got HDMI. They don't have a number by it, except for the different ports (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3).

Rats.

Not to punch down at MS, but this is a big part of why I don't really feel bad about sticking with Sony for the last few console generations. I prefer gaming on consoles despite having a legit Gaming PC™️ because in large part I just prefer the no-hassle ecosystem. And MS's entire guiding philosophy for their gaming division the last half decade has been to blur the lines between their consoles and PCs, bringing a lot of unnecessary PC baggage to their consoles (and visa versa as well). And I'm sure that appeals to some people but it definitely doesn't to me.

A lot of this "setup stuff" has much more to do with TV manufacturers than it does with console makers.

After 5 months of searching, and getting an inexpensive One, I finally managed to snag a Series X!

Shortly after getting my bonus at work, which covered the cost nicely!
