We need to talk about the Mario movie cast.

Jack Black's got the right energy for the more comedic version of Bowser, and I know next to nothing about Anya Taylor-Joy (not that it matters, since Peach's characterization through the years is not great), but the rest of that cast? Did they consult a Reddit subforum? For all its faults, at least the 1993 garbage pile cast Mario and Luigi correctly.

Please discuss. Should we even have expected anything different from Illumination?

Chris Pratt almost makes me walk away from the whole enterprise to be honest. The rest seems curious to fine, but I'm just not a fan of Pratt and seeing him as Mario is just not a good fit on so many levels for me.

Anya Taylor-Joy is great (watch Queen's Gambit or Emma.), but I don't know that she has a very distinctive voice. Jack Black seems pretty great for Bowser.

I think Charlie Day is perfect casting for Luigi. Some strong Luigi energy here:

Without knowing how much many of the other character are going to be around or their roles, its hard to know what to think. DK is a Mario character, but what is his role in a Mario movie? I am generally a slight Rogen fan (I think he's generally a net positive), but I don't know that he adds anything.

I guess I didn't join with the internet in general in completely turning on Chris Pratt. He did fine as a voice actor in the Lego Movie. There were definitely more interesting choices, but I don't see him as any sort of deal breaker. He seems like he can do bland hero man, and Mario has not to date had much more of a character than that. The interesting characters are the ones Mario bounces off of.

ah yes, Foreman Spike, everybody's favorite Mario-series character

I love it.

Spike and DK seem to really hint at this being an origin story kind of deal.

As for the casting? Until I hear them using the voices they plan to play the parts with, it's irrelevant to me.

My guess is Miyamoto asked, "We need an actor who knows what it's like to ride a dinosaur!"

And someone head "ride with dinosaurs" and looked no further than Jurassic World.

I didn't know about this. What. Awesome.

I know maybe five actors, my memory is just not made for stuff like this. I'm looking forward to seeing a trailer or something, then I can judge if they feel good to me. But for now, I'm just happy that this thing is happening.

I saw the list this morning and immediately thought that Charlie Day would make an excellent Luigi. Jack Black as Bowser also makes some sense. The rest is "see what they do with it" territory though I imagine KMKey can make the best of just about anything handed to him - a slightly unhinged Toad could be fun.

Octopus Prime

Ordinarily, I’d say that nobody has more fun during any production than Jack Black, Charlie Day or KMK.

So I do genuinely want to see all three of them playing off each other.

That Chris Pratt, though…

So, Pratt's casting is just inexplicable. Besides just them wanting a 'big name' I guess, and when you add all his other baggage on top of it that one casting choice did a lot to sour me on the movie, as much as Jack Blowser helps.

I spent some time thinking about how Pratt could possibly work in this role, and the best thing I could come up with is that Martinet, who we know IS featured in undisclosed roles, will still do all the Mario vocalizations we expect, but Pratt would be doing Mario's 'inner monologue'.

I doubt this is the plan, it's just the one thing that could make this choice palatable to me, unless he shocks us all with an unexpectedly great take on Mario.

Ah, Metroid: Other M, but with Mario?

Leaving aside his personal suckiness, I don't really understand how its a mystery how Pratt as Mario is going to work. He is going to do a bland everyman voice. I'll eat my hat if they try to do an Italian accent; there will be a few jokey lines as such, but for the most part he will being doing a 'regular guy' voice. No matter who they cast to voice Mario (it was never going to be Martinet), that is what it was always going be.

The whole thing is so bizarre, because on one hand, it feels like they nailed the voice cast except for Mario, but on the other hand, Mario is going to be the least interesting character in this movie, so does it matter?

I'm hoping they go with a Brooklyn accent, myself.

Also, it's Illumination, so I don't have a lot of hope in the movie being good regardless.

Huh, weird... it takes me right to the video Pratt uploaded where he's talking about voicing Mario. Maybe you need an account to view it?

I don't know, I'm still pretty new to Instagram, and they do things weird.

Edit: Here, YouTube to the rescue:
