Anybody collected some good orbs and gems recently? What are some of your favorite orbs and gems to collect?

I wanted to play something short the other day, so I tried the copy of Nights sitting in my Steam library that I must have got as a free giveaway or as some part of a bundle. It was a pretty great way to collect orbs. I appreciated the way that you don't just collect orbs by touching them, but you can do a kind of loop around a group of orbs, and it creates like a mini-gravity well that sucks up all the orbs inside the loop for you. If you want to collect some orbs, I would definitely recommend Nights!

GOOD: When you find some gems in an RPG, and the item description just says "can be sold for a high price."

BAD: When you find out at hour 50 that those same gems you've been selling the whole game are also used to craft elemental resist armor.

I played a bit of Freedom Planet the other day.

That there is a video game that knows how to make a crystal gem look like something worth gathering up

Thanks to F2P gachas I now associate "Gems" with "Please pay us more than the cost of a AAA game for funny munny to roll frivolous bullshit with".

I do have a few questions that I would like to have answered before I can respond.

Does it count if the gems are the currency in the game (or are only worth that)?

Does it count if you get the orbs and/or gems from defeated enemies or do they have to be ones that you find in the game world?

BAD: When you find out at hour 50 that those same gems you've been selling the whole game are also used to craft elemental resist armor.
Was there some particular game where this happened or are you just talking in general?

So... Sonic collects rings, which are gems, and also collects gems, which are emeralds, which are also dragon balls, which are orbs...

Things getting confusing ITT

In ZZT, gems give you health! Somehow, by means which are never explained, they can still be used as currency after giving you health.

Note that ZZT's gems give you 1 health each, while every damage source in the game takes health in increments of 10, which feels very unfair. They fixed this in Super ZZT by having gems give 10 health, which is very much appreciated on account of the world of ZZT having very little in the way of health care infrastructure.

Dragon Balls, and anything that is a dragon ball, such as an emerald, are both gems and orbs at the same time.

A video game where you've already collected all the orbs and gems and now have to strategically give them away to reduce your tax liability and bolster your public image in anticipation of running for elected office

Recently I have been playing Cally's Caves 4 on PC - it has gems you collect for cash. When you bust open a treasure chest they shower out in an arc and you go pick them up. They also pop out of defeated enemies. But I am at a point in the game where I don't really need money anymore yet I still keep collecting the gems.

Dragon Quest / Warrior III has some good orb collecting.

It's in the OP so it's a bit of a cheat, but Gravity Rush really is some A++ gem collecting. Reminds me I need to get back to that...

Item pickups in Soulsborne games are glowy wispy orbs, and collecting them is very good. The game is really good about giving you something for exploring all the nooks and crannies and going off the beaten path, and something is always in the form of an orb that goes "wooom"

Gotta say, those rupees in the Legend of Zelda series are some prime gems, and very satisfying to collect, too.

The best orbs to collect are in Crackdown because every one you find makes finding others more fun.

It's one banana. What could it cost, 10 orbs?

I played a bunch of Mario recently, and that series has all sorts of gems. Baba is You gives you a reward for each stage and world, I guess those are orbs.

Hearts power your subweapons in Castlevania. Castlevania Bloodlines has gems instead of hearts.

Therefore, hearts are gems.

I like how this thread almost immediately devolved into arguing about what constitutes a gem or orb. Never change, Talking Time

Anyway, Spyro has some solid, quality gems
